I hope JetBlue runs WN right out of Boston. At Logan, WN is the decidedly ‘weak’ one. Do unto others...

WN will still have year-round nonstop service to BOS from STL, which isn't currently served by B6. In addition, WN also has point-of-sale in the Baltimore/Washington, Chicago, Denver, Nashville, and St. Louis markets plus connecting feed from markets not served by B6 to support BOS-BWI/MDW/DEN/BNA/STL nonstop service.

In good news, looks like WN is beginning to move some planes out of storage and back into service!

I don't think they usually do a summery for an update (but they rarely do big updates like they have been doing).

Looks like some of the international flights that weren’t due to come back until at least January 2021 are now for sale in November and December. Also, it appears that, as of now, WN will have nearly 60 daily departures from Hawaii stations by the end of the year.

As far as daily departures for July... June 2, WN had 1,456 departures. July 16 will see 2,706 departures.

Approximately daily departure count for largest stations on 7/16...

Southwest El Paso to Seattle

Sat Jul 04, 2020 5:53 pm

I didn't know Southwest started flying from El Paso to Seattle, I though it was only Alaska. http://www.elpasointernationalairport.com/flights
I guess there is high demand from ELP to SEA

It doesn't. It's actually going to Boeing Field, so it must be a charter.

FYI, you apparently linked the live Flight Status report from ELP instead of a screenshot because the WN flight to the SEA area is not there anymore.

Ferry legs were PHX-ELP (8660) and BFI-PHX (8661). ELP-BFI had to be some sort of revenue.

Maybe a military charter? I know with normal commercial activity at a lower point, the charters seem to stick out a lot more.

With B6 pulling out of LGB do we think WN expands flights out there. If so mostly west coast or will the expand the bigger stations in the middle of the country? MDW/STL/BNA/DAL/HOU, etc

Here are the number of passengers and load factors of the top WN nonstop routes out of LAX that do not have current or already announced nonstop service out of LGB on WN in 2019:
LAX-DEN - 634406 passengers, 719575 seats, 88.16% load factor (WN previously operated seasonal, Saturday-only DEN-LGB nonstop service)
LAX-MDW - 559921 passengers, 611856 seats, 91.51% load factor
LAX-HOU - 475116 passengers, 531498 seats, 89.39% load factor
LAX-DAL - 465515 passengers, 509733 seats, 91.33% load factor
LAX-BWI - 326373 passengers, 353952 seats, 92.21% load factor
LAX-STL - 258870 passengers, 311308 seats, 83.16% load factor
LAX-BNA - 257370 passengers, 289933 seats, 88.77% load factor
LAX-MCI - 253257 passengers, 291973 seats, 86.74% load factor
LAX-ATL - 237323 passengers, 266776 seats, 88.96% load factor (LGB-ATL nonstop service unlikely to be added by WN with WN dropping LAX-ATL nonstop service)
LAX-SLC - 224995 passengers, 267048 seats, 84.25% load factor

I agree that WN adding LGB-MDW, LGB-DAL, LGB-HOU, LGB-STL, and LGB-BNA nonstop service are possibilities with MDW, DAL, HOU, STL, and BNA being five of the top destinations with nonstop service out of LAX but not LGB. In addition, WN adding LGB-BWI nonstop service is also a possibility with LAX-BWI being one of the top WN nonstop routes out of LAX and with BWI being one of the largest WN focus cities.

Southwest is Spirit Airlines #1 competitor based on the number of routes they directly compete on. What is interesting the rate in which Spirit is increasing the number of routes in which they directly compete against Southwest. In 2018, they competed directly on 102 routes. In 2019, it increased by 31% to 134 routes.

As in like the impact it had on June and July schedules? It just keeps pushing back the California flights.

Yea that's what I was thinking. Maybe they will see how we are with COVID then decide to extend or get rid of them

Love how every "travel blogger" says they will never fly AA/Ethihad again and then says it again and again on subsequent flights.

Same as June, July, etc. I think it’s reasonable to assume even if they’re for sale, they will not start/resume until the quarantine is lifted or the program allowing tested travelers to be exempt is approved.

Where should Southwest expand during COVID times. With extra aircraft what new routes make the most sense? Other airlines are adding new routes. Routes out of PHX, DEN, LAX, PHL, and possibly a return to EWR make the most sense. Curious what everyones thoughts are.

Mandatory 14-day quarantines will have that effect... Thankfully the interisland quarantine lifted so loads have improved.

You would struggle to defend that 7.6% load factors on low fares even begins to cover variable costs, even if you regard labor costs as fixed thru 9/30/20 because of CARES funding. WN should be using the time to restructure the network - probably more hub-like, as they have acknowledged - anticipating several years of weak demand.

Here is a current breakdown of WN service out of DAL (134 daily departures):
3x ABQ, 3x AMA, 5x ATL, 5x AUS, 2x BHM, 5x BNA, 0x BOS, 0x BUR, 3x BWI, 2x CHS, 0x CLE, 0x CLT, 1x CMH, 3x DCA, 6x DEN, 0x DTW, 3x ECP, 3x ELP, 3x FLL, 10x HOU, 0x IND, 0x JAX, 7x LAS, 4x LAX, 3x LBB, 3x LGA, 2x LIT, 3x MAF, 4x MCI, 6x MCO, 7x MDW, 1x MEM, 0x MKE, 0x MSP, 4x MSY, 1x OAK, 1x OMA, 0x ONT, 0x PDX, 0x PHL, 5x PHX, 1x PIT, 3x PNS, 0x RDU, 3x SAN, 5x SAT, 0x SDF, 0x SEA, 1x SJC, 0x SLC, 1x SMF, 5x STL, 4x TPA, 3x TUL

There are a few more nonstop routes that could be added by WN out of DAL such as DAL-BUF, DAL-CVG, DAL-BDL, and DAL-ORF with WN being down by approximately 60 daily departures at DAL from the originally scheduled 195 daily departures out of DAL.

I check the KLAS arrivals and departures board to track what gates are being used. I noticed something odd. Why is a Southwest flight from LGA on the Arrivals board?

Is this a mistake? Is SWA planning a LGA nonstop?

I check the KLAS arrivals and departures board to track what gates are being used. I noticed something odd. Why is a Southwest flight from LGA on the Arrivals board?

Is this a mistake? Is SWA planning a LGA nonstop?

WN boards usually show all the destinations the aircraft arrives from. It will show WN370 as three individual flights coming from LGA, DEN, and OMA.

Why doesn't SWA offer that flight to NYC customers? I know people who would love Southwest flying "direct" from LGA. It is not like you would miss your connection since its the same plane.

I personally prefer connections. (More planes, exploration, and footage).

That would be illegal.

A perimeter rule prohibits nonstop flights to or from points beyond 1,500 miles (2,400 km), but exceptions to the perimeter rule are flights on Saturdays and flights to Denver.

There might be other exceptions I don’t know about but that’s the gist of it. LGA-LAS would only be allowed on Saturday’s. They could fly to EWR or JFK but since they don’t serve those airports it isn’t an option

They're asking why it isn't sold as a direct through flight, not as a non-stop flight. They are willing to put up with the stops just to have the option. The perimeter rule is not an issue in this case.

And in fact, flight 370 is listed as a bookable option LGA-LAS with two stops.

Ohh yes. I mis-read it and didn’t see direct. Thanks for the correction.
