After today, I'm starting to understand what Jshank was posting about a while back about Rhonda at Av-day not really caring (or knowing about?) about capitalizing on the DL/AA/WN feud. It really seems like every midwestern city is getting SEA/BOS flights except STL, who gets to stick with the AS/WN status quo.
Instead of typing in "mods", consider using the report function.
Love how every "travel blogger" says they will never fly AA/Ethihad again and then says it again and again on subsequent flights.

I mainly was surprised that she said DL didn’t seem to be an option to BOS at the time.

But WN has been doing a good job flooding those markets with seats to help keep them away. 5 flights a day to BOS in summer and now added a 2nd daily to SEA (combined with 2 AS a day in summer). Doesn’t give DL much of an spot to make inroads unless they want to really commit to it and see how it shakes out. Not having a 2nd on BOS surprises me more than DL not starting SEA.

Oh, ok that makes sense. Still odd, however, that they aren't even being considered

I’m not sure why DL doesn’t want to challenge WN at STL. BOS would be an easy add. I think they view the STL market as stagnant. If you compare to BNA, AUS it is. DL revenue management and route development know what they’re doing.

It seems to me that the airport just has zero desire to discuss this route as they don't see it as a need. Maybe they are focused on a TATL, and I know for the past 5 or so years they have been focused on California/west coast, and successfully got OAK, SAN year-round, SMF, PDX, and SJC, which is much more important than another BOS airline. We have a similar economy to KC, yet DL is there so it isn't just about "cool" cities, so maybe now that we have fewer holes, if any, to fill, they can start prioritizing on routes of less importance like another BOS. I think you are right though, maybe DL doesn't want to add another flight on top of the 5 already there because it's too riskey

I think the thought is that there are plenty of hubs between stl and jfk to filter traffic thru so there is no need for us to use a JFK slot. Same applies to MCI. That and most people want to fly into LGA when going to NYC so just have flights to LGA from here. My issue is DL has a fair amount of flights I am interested in that only are from JFK and not ATL/DTW so that is annoying.

A well timed flight to JFK would feed DL's JFK international departures. JFK does have some routes that DL doesn't fly from ATL.
I will say, even from DCA, the JFK flights aren't always full and we have (5) flights a day. I usually like them for the easy upgrade. The LGA shuttle flights are usually pretty full.

DL not serving JFK is the single most important thing preventing me from leaving UA for DL.

Curious as to why DL uses larger aircraft from STL in off peak times and smaller aircraft in summer peak. The week of 6/22 which would be summer peak they are using MD90s 6X,A321s 1X and A320 X1 daily. The week of 9/21 they are using A321s 5X, A320 2Xs and MD90 1X daily.

Delta is a good strong carrier but I just think....key word think....they probably lag behind AA and UAL by many digits when it comes to international passengers. Just very very late to the game I guess you could say.

I would guess those equipment still will change, especially September.

I forgot to add that those are flights to ATL. I thought maybe the MD90s are being phased out and replaced with A321s but they are different sized aircraft.

I can't say this is definite or anything but I'd guess the larger planes in the summer are being deployed on their larger passenger flow routes. Wouldn't surprise me to see travel numbers for Delta be down a bit - everyone's headed to Florida or going to baseball games and Delta simply just doesn't want their ATL traffic flooded with Florida ways and means.

So, in short, what I'm getting at, is it's possible the business travel market for Delta might be stronger when everyone's back to work and the kids are in school and the seats are needed.

But as mentioned - could change in the future and be swapped out for other routes.

DL does this at a lot of outstations, for example, DL runs the most seats per day in September from IND.

It is perfect for them since WN guts their schedule in September, and September/October are the busiest months for business travel

Still don't get why people try to do this while in the air: AA2300 DFW-ORD diverts due to PAX trying to open door.

We have so many international businesses here and I have colleagues and friends that are continually needing to fly to Europe but they opt flying from Chicago instead.

Out of curiosity, how would a flight to your destination via Amsterdam do you any better than a flight to your destination via ORD

When you're part of a large multi-national business and you're talking about where you work, it's a joke when you work in a large market like STL where there's no direct connection to a major European business hub. Businesses want that B2B connection, and I think LHR would be the best from a business standpoint.

STL is the 20th largest metro area in the country. 1-19 all have a direct connection to Europe. So does 21-30, with the exception of SMF.

What airport in the Riverside/San Bernadino/Ontario metro area (#13) has a nonstop to Europe?
It doesn't look like San Antonio (#24) has any.

Those are not great examples to compare against STL case. LAX draws passengers from the Inland Empire. I don't know about SAT situation, with the except it's 1 1/2 hour from AUS, which has a good deal of TATL service now, and to come.

#13 is part of the LAX catchment area. Plus, while not Europe, Ontario has a flight to China.

Ozark-Enjoy!

I am originally from Carbondale and have flown Cape Air into MWA from STL over 50 times.

Enjoy the new Terminal too in MWA! Heads up, arrival into MWA requires you MUST exit security in MWA. The plane turns quickly to fly back to STL. Not sure if you did a turn or if you planned to stay a bit in MWA.

Let me know and I can give information if needed.

Have a great time!

Our Yoda of numbers, Jshank83 might have those figures. I would love to have YVR back. TW served YVR and YYZ until 2001. Did both flight many times for hockey games. If I remember the YYZ was operated by TWE at the end.

I do not have numbers for Canada. I’d love to see YUL added but I have no clue the numbers or how likely it is.

Alex, thanks so much for the info. The Cape Air booking system would not let me book the immediate return flight as a round trip because it failed to meet the "minimum connecting times". HA! Booking two separate one-ways would have added to the fare, not much really but what's a couple of hours at MWA?

Speaking of which, is there a vending machine/snack bar in the terminal? Some place to eat within walking distance? The website didn't say and I can always pack a few snacks to tide me over as my total R/T travel time is just over 4 hours. Might like a Coke or something while on the ground. Any info would be much appreciated!

Thanks again,

How many people fly daily to Canada in general? Can we get another flight besides to Toronto?

Our Yoda of numbers, Jshank83 might have those figures. I would love to have YVR back. TW served YVR and YYZ until 2001. Did both flight many times for hockey games. If I remember the YYZ was operated by TWE at the end.

I do not have numbers for Canada. I’d love to see YUL added but I have no clue the numbers or how likely it is.

Interesting that PIT has some of the lowest numbers but does have nonstop to YUL while MSY has the highest numbers but has no nonstop.

Love how every "travel blogger" says they will never fly AA/Ethihad again and then says it again and again on subsequent flights.

Boston/PHX/SLC/LAS $99
Chicago/Denver/Atlanta/Detroit $49
New York/Houston/Austin/Dallas/Orlando/DC $79
Bay area $129

Shame most programs have gone to redemption for money spent rather than miles flown.

With these fares could knock out a triangle or two or a "square" just for the heck of it.

Or make some day trips....say Cleveland for the Rock Hall or Dallas for the JFK museum or Bush Library et
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

With the current macro situation, I guess that we should not count on TATL any time soon.

Alex

OzarkD9S

Ozark-

Absolutely! When you deplane, you'll enter Baggage Claim outside of security from the ramp. Once inside, you'll see the Hertz Ticket Counter. To the left, is a little rest area that has outlets, couches, and seats and vending machines inside. I believe it accepts both cash and credit but bring both in case.

Uber is VERY limited in the area. When I was home two weeks ago I saw 3 ubers total in the area.

I don't think you'll be around long enough to rent a car for a day trip, but we do have Panda Express, Starbucks, Taco Bell about 2-3 min away from the airport down the Highway.

Enjoy the aircraft, airline and little terminal!

Would you believe we saw TWA MD80's. 727's, and DC9's flying in and out of MWA barely 25 years ago?! Those were the days! :)

I go back even farther. Took Fairchild Hiller FH-227Bs frequently out of there back in the 60's and 70's.Those things were teeth rattling.

Thanks yet again! The vending machine will suit my needs perfectly. Probably just need something to drink since I plan on taking a few granola/candy bars and my total out-and-back travel time is around 4 hours. Much appreciated.

I mean, it's southern Illinois, I'm surprised they even have that.
