So one side of me really, really wants to take one of these flights (not including CLT lol) and the other side of me is wondering if I am an idiot. Anyways, has anyone flown and gone on vacation during the virus and would be able to elaborate on if it is a good idea or not
I flew to California June 18 to 27. It was fine. That was when cases were lower though. They had just started going back up on the 27th. Southwest isn’t bad. No middles so if you are in a window seat really only 5 people are within 6 feet of you and 4 of those will have seat backs between you. Mask wearing was pretty good. I personally think chances you get it on a plane are fairly low because of the mask mandate but with the current uptick it would make me a little nervous. I’d probably be more nervous if it was to Florida or Arizona.
I have flown twice since June, once to Tampa/Miami(AA) & once to Denver(WN). I was planning on booking a trip to LA, but most indoor stuff is closed again, so I decided against it.
Everyone was wearing masks in the airports & on the plane, boarding was heavily staggered, the only time you are in very close proximity to another person is deboarding when people are picking their stuff out of the overhead bins (but that is only for 30 seconds or so).
You shouldn't be worried about getting COVID on a plane, airplane environments are probably the most well regulated & clean indoor environments you can be in right now. The much higher risk is catching the virus at your destination. Most people weren't wearing masks in Tampa when I went in Mid-June, although Denver was the opposite when I went a couple weeks ago.
If you are worried about catching COVID:
1. Take a nonstop flight
2. Fly WN, I think they have done the most to minimize risk
3. Goes without saying, but don't go somewhere that you think there will be a high chance of infection.
4. I wouldn't travel if I lived with someone with a compromised immune system
Out of those new routes, PVD is a good choice, Northeast has a good control of the virus & the area around PVD is nice in the summer (although I think they have a quarantine restriction). Mountain West states are good choices as well.
