The airport tweeted out they had more passengers this past weekend than any weekend since March 13-15. That means they had more passengers than a weekend that overall across the network averaged about 531K per day and last weekend was 404k average per day.

Southwest is adding more flights on shorts notice. Some start as early as today.

Looking at next week

Looking at TSA’s throughput numbers we’re at about 16-17% of 2019’s daily totals, but I’ve said all along airports like STL will bounce back up faster than some of the big hub cities like NYC, DC, LA, etc. WN helps, but it’s nice to see AA and UA adding back service.

Speaking of which, how’s BLV doing with Allegiant?

Allegiant, probably more than NK and F9, really has an interesting market and doesn’t really appeal to business travelers. They will probably have a decent summer.

I think it helps that they are so heavy on Florida routes.

The only thing I can think of is there are more connection options thru SJC/OAK (and they are adding a 2nd SMF starting next weekend), so right now they are focusing on that more than O&D to SFO with business travel still lacking.

I had noticed that WN will be reducing GRR-MDW nonstop service from 3 daily nonstops to down to only 1 daily nonstop starting on November 1st, but GRR will be gaining an extra daily nonstop to DEN on WN starting on November 2nd.

WN re-adding STL-GRR nonstop service might be a possibility with the cuts that WN is making on the MDW-GRR nonstop route. WN would also have more connecting feed on STL-GRR than it did back in Spring 2016 when WN last operated STL-GRR nonstop service as WN now has nonstop service out of STL to DSM, OAK, PDX, SMF, SJC, and ICT.

Load factors and # of passengers on WN STL-GRR in 2015 and 2016:
2015 - 73208 passengers, 72.82% load factor
2016 - 18017 passengers, 72.15% load factor

If WN does re-add STL-GRR nonstop service, WN would likely be able to get better load factors on STL-GRR than it did 4 years ago once demand for domestic air travel returns to normal levels as WN would be able offer more connections from GRR through STL than it did back in 2016.

STL is also far enough from GRR to support the return of WN STL-GRR nonstop service with STL-GRR being 382 miles long whereas MDW-GRR is the shortest WN nonstop route within the contiguous U.S. at only 137 miles long.

WN also had a higher percentage of connecting passengers on MDW-GRR in Q3 2019 than it did on STL-GRR in Q1 2016, with 97.7% of passengers connecting to other destinations on WN MDW-GRR flights in Q3 2019 vs. 83.6% of passengers connecting to other destinations on WN STL-GRR flights in Q1 2016.

In addition to a higher percentage of O&D traffic, the PDEW of STL-GRR on WN in Q1 2016 was 14 passengers per day, which is approximately double the PDEW of MDW-GRR on WN in Q3 2019, which was only 7 passengers per day.

WN had a load factor of 74.20% on the MDW-GRR route in 2019 and WN carried 206,851 passengers on MDW-GRR flights in 2019.

If WN is trying to put the squeeze on it's competitors then CVG would be a good add that would probably knock DL out for good. They should take advantage of UA on SFO and AA on LAX as well.

I agree that WN adding STL-CVG nonstop service is a possibility if DL drops STL-CVG nonstop service with CVG being one of the top destinations that WN doesn't currently serve nonstop from STL. The PDEW of STL-CVG was also higher than that of STL-DSM, STL-LIT, or STL-ICT in Q3 2019, and over 31% of the passengers traveling between STL and CVG were connecting on airlines other than DL in Q3 2019.

WN would also be able to offer connections to other destinations west of the Mississippi from CVG through STL if WN adds STL-CVG nonstop service, and WN also already has a FF base in STL and other markets west of the Mississippi River to support STL-CVG nonstop service.

There have also been some cuts made by AA, UA, and F9 out of CVG within the last year, including
(a) AA having already discontinued CVG-PHX nonstop service,
(b) AA not resuming CVG-PHX nonstop service in December 2020,
(c) AA downgauging CVG-DFW mainline flights to A319's from MD-80's subsequent to AA retiring its last MD-80's in September 2019,
(d) UA having already discontinuing CVG-SFO nonstop service in January 2020, and
(e) F9 dropping CVG-AUS, CVG-DFW, CVG-LAX, CVG-MSP, CVG-PHX, CVG-SAN, and CVG-SFO nonstop service.

There will also probably be more passengers connecting to destinations west of the Mississippi River from CVG once demand for domestic air travel returns to normal levels with the cuts that AA, UA, and F9 have made at CVG.

WN could add an evening nonstop flight to STL from OAK, which would allow passengers to connect to STL from Hawaii on WN. An evening nonstop to STL from OAK along with a morning nonstop to OAK from STL would also allow St. Louis-based business travelers to take day trips to the San Francisco Bay Area from STL on WN without having to connect.

According to AA's current flight schedules, AA is currently planning on resuming STL-LAX nonstop service on August 5th. WN is also currently planning on being back up to 3 daily nonstops on STL-LAX starting on August 11th.

While I am unsure if DL adding STL-LAX nonstop service will happen anytime soon due to DL's plans to become a smaller airline post-COVID-19, I had previously mentioned DL adding STL-LAX nonstop service as a possibility with DL already having nonstop service to LAX from CVG, CMH, DTW, IND, MCI, MSP, and OMA in the Midwest.

There are also some other adds apart from the addition of STL-CVG nonstop service or increased STL-SFO/OAK/LAX nonstop service that could be made by WN such as the return of STL-ABQ/BHM/GRR/SDF/SNA nonstop service and the addition of STL-CLT/JAX/ORF nonstop service.

I would gamble on this being a legal visit for the upcoming lawsuit against the NFL and the LA Rams. I am sure Spanos will be deposed and this might be why.

This should be interesting who played their cards properly. I applaud WN for getting things back moving sooner than the rest and thrilled to see STL capacity that high!

Also, to go along with the chart, I see WN was using E36/38/40 today. I know the E34-40 wing had been closed after demand plummeted. So hopefully that means it is back fully open.

SLC is 2x daily. These COVID schedules have been so wonky. Cut SLC then it goes 2x daily. Still no SAT/MSY/DTW/SFO/BDL.

One more thing. Listening to a KMOX interview with the airport director. The guy doing the interview says he got ahold of an internal WN memo that says “cities coming back strong this year ATL/AUS/STL/BNA. Each will see restoration to previous departure levels and some growth this year. STL is continuing its roll as a strong WN customer bass and convenient flow point for the midwest.

So that’s good to hear.

According to twitter and local radio, it wasn't there for depositions nor for maintenance. It flew in from Van Nuys Airport in LA Friday morning and flew back there on Sunday morning.

Seems very fishy.

CUN but I assume you were leaving that out. ECP surprising goes away on August 11th. Last year I think they ran it into October or November and they are running a bunch of it at the moment. But yes everything but PNS and CHS.

What exactly is the point of privatizing STL anyway? Just look 300 miles to the north in Chicago to see how privatizing public infrastructure goes.

The point is that it lines Rex's pocket with lots of money and the NAACP and Mayor with lots of donations

48 years ago, the DB Cooper 2.0 attempt at STL. Almost movie-like especially with McNally's girlfriend hijacking Allen Barklage and his helicopter. Not a well known story but for some reason I find it fascinating, and that McNally is out of prison.

By the way anyone who can't read the above post dispatch article and gets squiggles for letters, just copy and paste that into a word processor and like magic it become legible.
