As a GA pilot, I took it upon myself the other day (Sunday at around 6:25-6:40 pm local time) to fly above the controlled airspace surrounding AUS to observe the traffic. My passenger and I were bummed to see only a single aircraft (a UA 320) parked at the 35-gate main terminal; granted, a WN 73G had just left the terminal for its flight to DEN; we watched it take off from 17R. According to FlightAware a couple of other flights landed just after we flew away from AUS. And, of course, the long term parking lot remained virtually empty.
The southern terminal had a single F9 320 that we watched as it approached and landed on 17R after a flight from MCO.
I truly look forward to seeing the main terminal look normal once again.
I'm sure this is deep grief by seeing one parked aircraft at deserted terminal. Although this 6:30pm local time you observed the traffic at AUS was not the airport rush hour. Typically, the rush hour at AUS is between 4pm and 5pm and I checked the Flightradar24; apparently we have about 6 parked aircrafts there at between 4pm and 5pm. This is still pretty low number than pre-pandemic.
Couple years after 9/11, I recalled I saw only one Southwest 737, nothing else on the tarmac!
