At this point in the calendar, the 'tide has come in' and grounded frames are at their zenith. This gives a rare opportunity to evaluate sub-fleets as they brush with or enter retirement from the perspective of airline divestments. The focus of this study is the A330-200; tables in the first post and a second post for commentary. This is a follow up to a 2018July post (nadir.local) 2018Jan (zenith.local).

postulation.July is the ~nadir in annual commercial passenger aircraft storage
postulation.Dec is the ~zenith in annual commercial passenger aircraft storage
data.60 operator transitions 2019...
data.average age of an A332 at retirement, measured by commercially active: 17.6 yrs
data.scrapped and grounded available lift has substantively increased since the last study(2018july)
hypothesis: The secondary sales market is tilted toward a supply imbalance
hypothesis: The A332 is an robust re-purposing platform; notably P2MRTT
hypothesis: Operator motive factors for secondary acquisition include availability and commitment dynamics as well as price.
hypothesis: Leasing companies are tilting toward A332 part-out at the 18.5year maintenance point
hypothesis: 10+% of the global A332P fleet, ~60+/- frames (1 in 10), will transition operators or enter the 'stand-by' queue over a rolling 12 calendar month period
hypothesis: A332P orders executed since the financial crisis were comparatively improper from a financial analytics perspective
prog: A332P 'parked-available-lift' will materially increase from this point forward in time
prog: A glut of unused A332Ps is on the horizon; any WB glut will be lead by this variant and the 772er

Returned to lessor today. Aircraft flew this morning from Buenos Aires EZE to Orlando SFB. AR's A340 fleet is down to one frame (LV-FPU), scheduled to exit the fleet next month.

Any news on when the final GF A330 will go (A9C-KE)?

KD and KE headed for St Athan in November, and KF in December. KE soldiers on, I'm just wondering for how long?

Thanks

According to planespotters.net, D-AAAU & D-AAAV have been scrapped in August 2019 at Schwerin (SZW). Those were the last 2 of 5 that were parked there. The other 3 were ferried to TEV & AUH. Does anyone have pictures of the scrap process? Was not able to find something...

Seriously, no carrier cares about ex-VN VN-A379 and A381? Those Pratt-powered A332s are just around 8 years old and still being preserved in good condition.

Meanwhile, EY seemingly has retired all its A332s... according to FR24 none has been flying since end of December 2019.

As per the above unconfirmed report/discussion on Avcom it seems that South African Airways A340'S are up for sale. This probably part of the turnaround strategy.

Very interesting, I did not know that scrapping meant shredding most of the plane, and putting the debris in garbage trucks. I thought the materials (aliminium, plastic, composite materials) would be carefully separated and recycled. It rather looks like a large part of the plane is going to a landfill, ot is there a next step?

Separating and recycling the materials requires a lot of manhours. It's probably not viable in Germany to do so. But I can imagine that they just ship the whole container to a low wage country where the materials will be separated.

You can't put stuff like that in a landfill in Germany. It is more or less the same process like with an old car on the junk yard: All the valuable, dangereous, or easy removable parts are (manually) removed. All the liquids are removed. The rest is going through the shredder. But this is not the end. The resulting shredded material is further sorted and seperated, automatically and manually, for cars into 10 or more gradings, like different metalls, rubber, different plastics, glass, cables, textiles and so on. Anything with any value is sold for recycling, e.g. metalls, glass, certain plastics . Stuff that can't be recycled may be used as refuse derived fuel in steel works or cement plants. The rest goes to a incineration plant. Only what remains after all that can go to a landfill.

Does anyone have details of the plan for the remaining 10 SQ A330-300s? I think 2 more are due to be removed by March 2020 leaving 8. When are these due to go back to lessors?

You are correct. It was put back into service on 3/2. Not sure how long the reprieve will last but it can't be that long... the lease is up over the next few weeks!

Maybe a candid question, but what would be the reason of keeping an aircraft 13 months on the ground and subsequently scrap it?
I'm asking also because I can't imagine that the aircraft could not be placed at all to any operator for any reasonnable price on short or long term lease? The list of airline that have been looking at capacity for last summer is not insignificant with the MAX issue, Hajj/Umrah etc...
Isn't small revenue better than not at all?

* There are 60 homeless A332s at the kennel.

* Ln735, Ln401 and now Ln811 have all retired to scrap after ~11.6 years of commercial service. This is far less than KPMGs estimated economic life of 22 +(new tech)/-(old tech). A332 buyers have been experiencing accelerated economic depreciation.

datum: A332P.available lift that is parked: ~76, which is equivalent to 14.3% of commercial passenger A332s (Scrapped or lost frames are subtracted). 16 of the 76 are committed.
datum: average age of an A332 at retirement, measured by commercially active: 17.6yrs
datum: ~22 operators have announced divestments/returns of ~101 A332 frames occurring though 2025
hypothesis: The secondary sales market is tilted toward a supply imbalance.
hypothesis: Operator motivation factors include availability and lease commitment dynamics as well as price.
hypothesis: Leasing companies are tilting toward A332 part-out at the 18.5year maintenance point

A332P.configured for passenger.commercial 582
- commercial frames reaching EOL from use and/or economics 42, 7.22%
- lost frames due to conflict or accidents 8
- A332P.available.stored 60, 11.28% (configured - scrapped)
- A332P.committed/due/planned 16
A332P.available lift that is parked 76, 14.29% (configured - scrapped)

You might consider that this board discounts or overlooks comparative economic depreciation over time. Any purchase of an A332P or A338P passenger post financial crisis de-emphasises proper financial analytics. Freighter versions A332/8 share the imperfection. The opposite appears to be true for the A333P2F.

That is a young frame. 13 years old.

Within the perspective that we are having a conversation in a virtual coffee shop...

'agreed, I originally shared your surprise and curiosity. Is it because of the frame's history with Shaheen air? Is there an issue with proper maintenance paperwork returning to Aircastle? It would be interesting to know the Aircastle team's thinking; are they trying to get in front of salvage value declines? Logically, the engines will go on as leased power-by-the-hour or back to work with a new owner.

Aligning and expanding on your lease theme, the A332 variant looks to fill short-term and peak needs (demand elasticity value). You would think that leasing companies would paint a few frames white and offer season leases; ie charge a premium for an airline to short-term lease a frame for the summer season and during non-peak, lease the frames out on six week terms to cover maintenance events.'

... would you pass those virtual cookies?
