More A340s will be retired.
As larger widebodies are parked, there is some opportunity for the A332/A333. As there is an active A333P2F program, there will future demand for those airframes.

It depends on the recovery path. I think a long time to prior flight levels. Others predict a V.

I wonder how may A340's and older A330's, if any will survive after the Covid-19 pandemic. Looks like the end of the line of them as airlines reduce fleets, want fewer model types, shift to newer and more efficient models.

Looks like end of the line as well for AF A340 fleet. According to Planespotters, one active A/C left... but FR24 is showing no activity over the last week.
Nothing too surprising, but still the end of an era.

Sorry in advance for this slightly offtopic post.
The Airbus A340s were already at low demand because more efficient planes are available (A330NEO, A350, 787 and 777)
With demand for passenger airtravel down as result of the Covid-19 pandamic, I have a very pesimistic view for the future of the A340s.
Airbus sold plenty of A340s with buyback clause, thus they had to buy back many A340s.
I wonder how Airbus / the industry can increase the residual value of A340s?
AFAIK the A340 is actually two families, the -200/-300 and -500/-600.
Several ideas have been floated for A340P2F programs, but non have materialized. Now during the Covid-19 pandamic freight demand remains while passenger damand has vanished. Thus the potential for a P2F program is higher.
There is also residual value in parts. I think this better applies to the -200/-300 than for the -500/-600, because of the commonality with the A330CEO.

What other potential alternative uses are there for the A340s?
Are A340s suitable as engine testbed?
Could A340-300E be converted into A330 MRTT (tanker aircraft)?

You raise some very good questions / points.

Both A and B have ultimate ownership interests in many aircraft directly and via third parties, arising from buybacks and previous trades, while others remain in service (for now) with operating subsidies. They will likely use this financial year to write these off, as the costs will be dwarfed by other one offs, perhaps with the exception of A380's.

Will Airbus (and engine OEM's) want to re-purpose old air frames, rather than sell new aircraft and engines? If the option is Boeing sells new v Airbus re-purposes (in other words Airbus isn't a contender for a new sale), then it's possible.

At this stage the WB glut is enormous. A & B will be competing with airlines, lessors and financiers trying to find homes for used and nearly new aircraft. Even new aircraft to which they were too committed.

Most of these aircraft have watertight engine maintenance contracts, mostly for 12 or 14 years, but some longer, which while you can switch to low use for a fee, or to storage' for a bigger change fee, but still up for monthly payments, wake up service charge and change fees when back in use.

1) the A340 may support the A333p2f program as organ donors. It's an interesting thought to think of an A340 as a converted freighter, despite the economics.
2) you would think that the engines would find work, thinking beyond aviation

3) It would be interesting to know the technical details and answer. The market reality is that the A332 is the best and likely last MRTT. The current 'market' is ~20 frames and AB has claimed that the A332 will be offered(new) until mid-decade. AB has and will convert a used A332 to the MRTT standard. The kicker is that the utility has/is changed/ing, separating tanker and transport. Tanker drones being the disrupter.
puzzling over:
1) proper amortization of long-lived assets where costs and revenue are complex, in a technologically evolving environment.
2) the economics of gate real estate

I think this really is a good time for compleating development of LCF conversion for the A330CEO, all A340s, A380 and 777.
AFAIK LCF conversion means creating a cargo lifting system between the cargo hold and the main (passenger) deck. Most likely the main deck doesn't need to be reinforced, reducing the cost of a p2f conversion. The downside is that the cargohold-height limits the cargo hight on the main deck.
I think an LCF conversion could be usefull as package freighter. And they could ballence sesonal dirrerences in passenger and freighter demand, when seats are placed on pallets.
The A330P2F could also be applied to A340s, though this requires certification.

Re: A330 and A340 Write-off/Retirement/Scrap Thread - 2020

Wed Jun 24, 2020 9:39 pm

I liked the overview given in the A380 and 747 threads, so I'll try to sum up the current status of the A340-600 here. I looked for the most recent photos in the database, but some are several months old.

Active (9 aircraft):
Mahan Airlines (3 active + 4 stored): EP-MMH (latest flight 20.06 IKA-DXB), EP-MMI (currently in the air PVG-IKA) , EP-MMR (currently in the air CAN--IKA)
+ stored EP-MME, EP-MMF, EP-MMG, EP-MMQ (all std @ IKA)

South African Airways (3 active + 6 stored): ZS-SNC (latest flight 24.06 JNB-IAD), ZS-SNF (latest flight 21.06 IAD-JNB), ZS-SNG (latest flight 17.06 IAD-JNB)
+ stored ZS-SNA, ZS-SNB (both std @ JNB), ZS-SND, ZS-SNE, ZS-SNH, ZS-SNI (all 4 std @ SBD)

Maleth Aero (2 active + 1 stored): 9H-EAL (currently in the air BOH-TAO), 9H-NHS (latest flight 23.06 BOH-NKG) Presumably for cargo only, unsure if seats are still installed
+ stored 9H-PGS (std @ TEV)

Iberia (1 active + 13 stored): EC-JPU (currently in the air MAD-GIG) I think this one is scheduled for retirement this year, like all IB A346
+ stored EC-INO, EC-IOB, EC-IQR, EC-IZX, EC-IZY, EC-JBA, EC-JLE, EC-JNQ, EC-KZI, EC-LCZ, EC-LEU, EC-LEV, EC-LFS (all std @ MAD)

"Active" (4 aircraft):
Sky Prime: HZ-SKY (?) Listed as active by planespotters.net but no recent activity on FR24.com - VIP - not tracked
AZAL Azerbaijan Airlines: 4K-AI08 (std @ GYD) Listed as active by planespotters.net but no recent activity on FR24.com
Plus Ultra: EC-NFP (std @ MAD), EC-NFQ (latest flight 15.06 AUH-MAD) Listed as active by planespotters.net but no recent activity on FR24.com

Stored (59 aircraft):
Lufthansa (18 aircraft): D-AIHA, D-AIHB, D-AIHC, D-AIHD, D-AIHE, D-AIHF, D-AIHH, D-AIHI, D-AIHK, D-AIHL, D-AIHP, D-AIHT, D-AIHU, D-AIHV, D-AIHW, D-AIHX, D-AIHY, D-AIHZ all stored @ TEV - all scheduled for retirement
European Aviation Group (9 aircraft): D-AAAZ stored @ TEV, D-AAAS (both ex Boeing, ex China Eastern) presumably stored @ AUH, 2-EALB, 2-EALC, 2-EALD, 2-EALF (all 4 ex Etihad) stored @ TEV, 2-EALK, 2-EALL (both ex Virgin Atlantic) stored @ BOH, F-HHIT (latest flight LDE-SZB on 12.03.2020 - stored/scrapping @ SZB?)
Boeing Aircraft Holding Company (1 aircraft): D-AAAR (ex China Eastern) stored @ TEV
Thai Airways (6 aircraft): HS-NA, HS-TNB, HS-TNC, HS-TND, HS-TNE, HS-TNF all stored @ UTP - for retirement ??
Virgin Atlantic Airways (1 aircraft): G-VFIT stored @ BOH, to be sold to European Aviation Group

The majority of the stored aircraft will not return to service with their owners, although some could potentially find new life for operators like Mahan Airlines.

Rumour has it that the world's first A330 has been retired today. Cathay Dragon B-HLJ (ex-VR-HLJ, F-WWKA) has left HKG as KA2486.

Is there a plan to put the aircraft in a museum? There are only 2 "preserved" A330, one as a café and one as an (underwater) diving attraction.

That's not true. There is at least one more A330 that has been preserved as an aviation museum in KTM, Nepal -- the Turkish Airlines A330 that went off the runway. I took a pic when I was there in 2018:

Good catch. I trusted planespotters.net, who list this aircraft as "written off".

Shame the a346's are leaving even though it's perfectly understandable. My favourite plane for sure. Its proportions are just perfect.

Cathay Pacific posted on their Facebook page regarding B-HLJ's retirement:

"After 24 years of loyal service, B-HLJ, the world’s first Airbus A330, departed for its final assignment under clear blue skies. Assembled in France, B-HLJ was once the world’s largest twinjet. In 1996, it joined Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon and served both fleets successively for 24 years. Taking to the skies for the last time on 17 July, our iconic passenger aircraft concluded 63,900 hours and 26,983 cycles of service. Here’s to a lifetime of globetrotting!"

By any chance, does somebody know/understand the storing procedure of Etihad's A330s? The majority of the fleet is parked in Teruel, with just a few sitting in Abu Dhabi. But it is quite common to read on skyliner that an aircraft is ferried out of storage while another one heads into it. Has it something to do with decommissioning? As I understand, Etihad wants to retire the A330s in the long term.
