Looks like Qantas may have stayed true to their word on keeping their 747s through the COVID-19 crisis. Today they filed a one time 747-400 flight on MEL-HND on October 19, 2020.

Yes, G-CIVO is the only BA 744 still in service at the moment, all others are undergoing previously planned maintenance or are stored. She has done several LOS runs over the past few weeks.

Final Virgin Atlantic 747-400 (G-VROY) ferried LHR-GLA under VIR801P yesterday for storage. Sad to see so many go.

Welcome to the next weekly installment of Which Passenger 747-400s are Still Flying in 2020?. The data for which aircraft are active is taken from Planespotters.net, cross-referenced with Flightradar24 and any comments posted on this thread. Aircraft which are listed as active will be illustrated with the most recent airborne/take-off/landing photograph in the Airliners.net database, and those stored will be listed. If a stored aircraft has flown within the previous 7 days I'll make note of that. If an aircraft is stored but planned to become active I'll make note of that too, but won't list it as active until it is flying.his means some aircraft which may be being brought back to active status won't be listed here. Full freighters (either new-builds or converted) are not under consideration here.

The following operators have aircraft in service:

Air China
2 aircraft active

B-2445 25882/1021 Boeing 747-4J6 - last flew MAD-MAD 09/05/2020 (was scheduled to TSN but appeared to have an issue, held and then returned to MAD)

  • Mahan Air - 1 aircraft stored: EP-MNB
  • Qantas - 5 aircraft stored: VH-OEE, VH-OEG, VH-OEH, VH-OEI, VH-OEJ (Planespotters no longer lists -OEG with Qantas, but there has been some suggestion it is still in the fleet, stored in MHV, so I'm leaving it here for now)
  • Rossiya Russian Airlines - 9 aircraft stored: EI-XLC, EI-XLD, EI-XLE, EI-XLF, EI-XLG, EI-XLH, EI-XLI, EI-XLJ, EI-XLM
  • Thai Airways International - 8 aircraft stored: HS-TGA, HS-TGB, HS-TGG, HS-TGO, HS-TGP, HS-TGW, HS-TGX, HS-TGZ
  • Virgin Atlantic Airways - 7 aircraft stored: G-VAST, G-VGAL, G-VLIP, G-VROM, G-VROS (last flew LHR-MAN 05/05/2020), G-VROY (last flew LHR-GLA 07/05/2020), G-VXLG

Summary
As of today, that gives us 8 airlines operating 12 aircraft with another 53 stored, with 13 more airlines with 54 aircraft all stored. Virgin Atlantic's return last week looks like bad data on Planespotters.net - the aircraft wasn't active per se but rather positioning for storage. Two of the Saudia aircraft are now showing as back to Air Atlanta Icelandic.

TG's latest update for S20 and S21 seems to indicate no 747-400 flying. It might be the signal of another 744 fleet gone - honestly a fleet that should have gone years ago given 1) its financial, 2) the market that it's trying to compete in and 3) its interior

Ah that makes sense. I hadn’t thought to use Skyliner as a reference; I will do that from now on.

That makes me sad - one of QF's 774ERs was the first 747 I ever flew on back in 2005.

Well, they have not painted over the logo and titles which is a good sign I guess? Normally retired QF aircraft have their logo and titles painted over

What I’ve heard (and it makes sense) is that this is temporary storage. Qantas can pull it out of the desert once COVID is over, but for now they’re storing it. That’s why logos and engines are still there. I’ve heard on the Qantas fleet thread that VH-OEH will be joining her the week of May 17-23, we’ll see what happens with that one.

G-CIVO has been down to Cape Town twice (23/5 and today, 25/5) as part of 7 repatriation flights being run by the UK FCO, UK High Commission and Charter outfit CTM between the Mother City and Heathrow. There are also 3 flights operating from JHB back to LHR on 28/5, 1/6 and 4/6....this 4/6 fight being the final repatriation flights for Brits in SA for sometime

The Cape Town flight operates overnight down as the old BA58, is quickly turned around and returns as BA9114, arriving T5 at 10.15pm. I'm on Wednesdays flight, so looks like I get another ride in the Queen.

From what I know, TG just retired their entire 777-200A fleet with possible rumors of retiring the entire 787-8 and 787-9 fleet, but no words on the 20+ year old 747 fleet.

Do the last two aircraft, being pun into storage, make sense?
They are purpose-built freighters, less than 12 years old, and we are in the middle of dedicated cargo boom.
Any explanantion?

Both G-VROY and G-VXLG (following day) have since repoed out of GLA to MAN for decommissioning. I did post pics of both departing on the MAN thread but I can no longer find them .

LH is sending 2 744 to ENS this week for retirement:

D-ABTL from FRA
D-ABVO from PEK

So the fleet will be down to 11.

Lufthansa will retire two 744s ... the oldest one at the moment D-ABVO and the youngest and last delivered 744 to Lufthansa D-ABTL. Can anyone confirm if D-ABTL would be slated for maintenance? Weird thing: D-ABVO was in PEK for maintenance since January and will fly direct into retirement without returning to FRA. Both aircraft will be ferried to Enschede, Netherlands. What a sick time at the moment.

I read in the LH Group Fleet thread that D-ABVO ferried to PEK for maintenance but that it was never completed. It just sat there during the whole COVID crisis.

CIVP ran the CPT-LHR daytime repatriation flight as BA9114 on 01/06, having flown cargo down the previous evening as BA59. CIVO ran cargo down to CPT on 01/06 as BA59 and did the daytime repatriation flight on 02/06, again as BA9114. These flights have been operating full with volunteer BA crews

AELS is denying they purchased the 2 Lufthansa 747's. Local sources at the airport said the 747's are going to be stored at Enschede, not scrapped.

Lufthansa D-ABVO is now indeed on her way from Bejing to Enschede: https://www.flightradar24.com/DLH9923/24a39351
According to Scramble forum D-ABTL will follow her as well tomorrow; directly from Frankfurt. That bird did make one final return flight to Riyad yesterday.

Both aircraft have about 100K on the clock

G-CIVF 99,495 on 4/09/2019 and G-CIVU 100,207 on 27/02/2020.

I visited MHV today (June 7, for the Northrop Grumman L1011 N140SC), and saw the three Qantas 747-400ERs (VH-OEG, VH-OEH, VH-OEI) that are parked on the Western edge of the airport. VH-OEG had her tiles painted over, signifying that the 747s will not return to the Qantas fleet.

(Mods, please allow as this is the only photo anywhere of VH-OEG's markings painted over)

According to gabik001 on the Chicago Aviation Thread, there's a rumor that the next KLM 747-400 ferrying AMS-ORD before retirement will be on Monday, June 15. However, this Dutch forum states that PH-BFY will ferry AMS-ORD-MHV on Monday, June 22. Currently unknown if these are two different frames or the same frame with two different dates.

They say part and scrap for almost everything including the Qantas 744ER which is not the case.

Perhaps, however there's reports of at least one of the QF 744ERs in storage having its titles painted out, which usually doesn't signal short term storage.

Oh, no. I was hoping until the last moment they would keep at least one until the next year. I was even ready to book a return trip to RUN any time just to have a last flight on the 744.

Stupid move, IMHO. How are they going to fly their schedule when French Overseas traffic picks up?
