Why did DL185 (ATL-PVG) divert to ANC yesterday?

Tue Dec 31, 2019 10:45 pm

Why did DL185 (ATL-PVG) divert to ANC yesterday? FR24 says it went as far west as the Russian Far East before going back to ANC.

True mechanical or medical emergency divert to Russia, anything else go back to ANC or FAI. They started in US just easier in every way to land in ANC if at all possible. Paperwork, customs, health insurance, delta served city it's easier on all fronts if possible to go back to US since flight originated there

Unless they have change things in last couple of years forget Russia. Except for an engine failure or fire we considered Far Easter Russia to pretty much same as being over the ocean especially in winter . I flew those routes for 20 years ..

If they had options (ie. the nature of the diversion didn't necessitate an immediate landing), ANC would have better support all round.

I’m not so down on Far East Russia—several layovers on Petro were OK, good support, services. Hotels were just ok, but 300,000 people live there. Khabarovsk is actually pretty nice but off track to the Rim destinations. Friends have tech stopped and RON’d in Magadan, less nice, not to be repeated.

That said, in an airliner, I’d continue on or return to ANC unless dire situation.

Unless Delta is different a diversion to Russia is all but forbidden unless continues safe flight is not an option. IE uncontrollable fire or out of gas. Even an engine failure we will fly for hours to not land in Russia. Our manual even says don’t divert to Russia even for a medical as hospitals and treatment may be limited or extremely poor.

As someone said above we treat Russia as if we were over the ocean.

A few years ago KE diverted to PKC due to engine failure. Recently an Air China (CA) diverted to Magadan due to the cargo indicator saying there was a fire (false alarm)

There is a whole webpage about diversions to remote airports that is fascinating

https://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/he ... shteyn.pdf

Especially During this time of year, medical diversions Are not recommended in Russia since it can be so time consuming to get a passenger to a reasonable hospital that they may be less likely to survive. The extreme cold makes support difficult for airplanes and road transportation may be less than ideal, especially when there are not customs and immigration officials on duty.
