Air France Cabin Refresh Update

Wed Jan 01, 2020 11:52 am

Hi All,

First post on this site, after being an avid reader for many years!

How is the fleet-wide refresh doing?

How many 777s have the new BEST cabin? Does anyone have a breakdown of what aircraft have the very old Rockwell Collins screen i.e. COI Size / Small 9'' panasonic white screens / Brand new Panasonic screens found on the BEST slimline seats in Y Class, and if so what routes they do.

I'm lead to believe the COI Fleet are due to start a cabin refresh to bring them up to the same standard as the rest of the fleet.

How are the 330's getting along with their new cabin upgrade?

Would be interesting to find out!

Thanks and Happy New Year!

I believe all the A330s are done with cabin refresh. Not sure how far along are the 777 fleet refresh. I think some of them are actually set not to be updated, instead retired.

AFAIK all the A330 and 777-200ER have the new interiors with no plan to retire them in the short term.
19 77W received the cabin refresh (F-GSQA/B/C/F/G/I/J/K/L/M/U/V/Y/H and F-GZNA/B/C/D/E).
The 12 COI 77W (F-GSQN/O/P/R/S/T/X and F-GZNF/G/L/O/N) will receive new interiors starting this year I believe.
I don't know about the remaining 12 77W.

Thanks for that! It would be great to know what sort of interior was in the remaining 12. Im assuming they have the Panasonic 9'' white IFE screens, i remember having them onboard AF flight in 2013/14.

Do the COI 77W just do the French Caribbean flights, or are they utilised on other routes?

Be good to know what A/C and IFE type they send to PEK/PVG as im looking to go there towards the end of the year, and would hate to be on one of the unrefreshed COI type A/C

Not really ...

A330 : fleet of 15 aircraft - 11 aircraft have the new interior. The 4 remaining will be retrofitted by March 2020 (F-GZCD will be the last one to be retrofitted)

B777 :

All the 25 B772ER have the new cabin.
19 B77W have the new cabin (the ones fitted with the First Class La Première)

For your information, the appellation « COI » doesn’t exist anymore. The first of the 12 B77W in the former COI configuration (14C/32S/422M) has been retrofitted with the new cabin (F-GSQN) in a new configuration of 14J / 28W / 430Y (1x2x1 config in J. Same seats than the A359).
S and M class doesn’t exist anymore even on flights to PTP CAY FDF RUN etc...
And yes, those planes fly to other destinations than the Caribbean and Indian Ocean such as YUL.

FlySSC, do flights to YUL operated by the ex-COI planes still have an inferior service?

The inflight service in Y is now the same on all the flights including destinations in Indian Ocean and Caribbean. No more difference

Thanks for your great input.

Would the ex-COI a/c with the old interiors ever appear in PVG or PEK? Looking at flying there in September. Im assuming with these being quite premium markets, that a/c with the BEST interiors would be flown there?

Would love to see this thread updated with a/c modification updates as and when... akin to the UA/DL fleet threads!

While the S class (Alizé) dsnt formally exist anymore, Air France's premium eco product to CAY, PTP, FDF and RUN still defers from the rest of the network : on those flights passenger get some of the J meal options, which is not the case on other flights.

There are 12 COI 77W and they are getting retrofitted starting this year, I read somewhere that RUN would be the first destination to get them but I can't seem to find a link anymore. They are flown to PTP, FDF and RUN from ORY (CAY gets a 772). From CDG they are used on YUL, BKK, MRU and TNR.
They have been used for subs on other routes but this is very rare.

I'm astonished nothing has been said about the remaining "loisir" 77Ws aka 42J. I'm sure we will slowly have a rejig of configurations now that the union contract has been renegociated. This was apparently one of the reasons why there are so many variations when it comes to 772 cabin types.

The retrofit has already started with F-GSQN whois already in service between ORY and PTP / FDF (not RUN)

As I mentionned above, since Jan. 1st 2020, there is no more S or M and the inflight service in Y and W is now the same wether you are on a flight to JFK, NRT, SIN or PTP, CAY.

No. This 14J configuration is not used to PEK or PVG.

    PVG has 2 x Daily flights (A388 + B772ER)

    PEK has also 2 x Daily flights B772ER (40J) + B77W (4P / 58J).

Well thanks for the info then, as I fly to CAY once a month in W (granted my last flight was on dec 16th, and the next one will be on jan 22nd), I'll now avoid AF since their soft product on those flights really were the only selling point to me you simply cannot sleep in those awful seats.

F-GSQT is the first of the 77W COI fleet to have the new BEST cabin installed. Hopefully all should be updated by year end.

Interesting- can you share a bit more background as to how the union agreements influenced the config and number within the fleet?

F-GSQX is apparently currently in for refurbishment to the new COI 77W config?

    B77W COI fleet:-

    Old config 14/32/422 -

    F-GS.. QN / QO / QP / QR / QS
    F-GZ.. NF / NG / NL / NO / NN

    New config 14/28/430 -

    F-GS.. QT / QX?

I’m surprised AF aren’t doing these refurbs a lot quicker, under the current circumstances, now that the fleet utilisation is much slacker. But then AF, being AF, have never been quick to do any refurb.

All A330’s are now also in the new config.

Airlines are short of liquidity due to the Covid-19 crisis, and AF is no different, currently dealing with huge financial trouble, and temporarily laying off 90% of staff.

They simply do not have the money, and all non vital operations such as cabin refurbs will have to wait until further notice (not to mention that installing brand new seats while asking employees to leave would not be well seen at all either by workforce or general public!).

Why will AF spend money on aircraft refurbishments when they are not making any money at this time due to grounding of aircraft and travel almost non-existent?
