2019 US airports - very large and large hubs by total passenger traffic - enplanements and deplanements

Fri Jan 03, 2020 4:58 pm

Most US airports have started reporting passenger statistics until Nov-2019. Some of them are in the Oct-2019 with the exception of one airport.

I have provided the details YTD and based on the reported months have computed the MTM AAGR. I have also provided the 2018 total pax and the corresponding ranking. 2019 ranking is blank as it's not correct to provide the ranking till everybody has reported their corresponding numbers. But directionally it still provides insights on where the overall ranking may stand - typically it does not tilt a whole lot but airports where passenger numbers are close it does tilt somewhat towards the end. Note that total pax denotes enplanements and deplanements.

I have pulled the info from respective airline detailed stats website. If you spot glitches, please let me know. I will continue to update the thread as airports start catching up after the holiday season.

Why 29 airports rather than 30? Just curious.

HNL does not publish detailed monthly stats. They publish one file sometime in May/June timeframe with the calendar year nos. for all the Hawaii airports.
https://hidot.hawaii.gov/airports/libra ... tatistics/

I have tried to reach out to folks in the past but they do not respond. If I get HNL, I would have 30 airports.

Your YTD international number for IAD is obviously wrong. You might have used the monthly number rather than the year-to-date figure which is 7,090,529 I believe.

Thank you. You are correct. I used the monthly no. for IAD. for the international vs. YTD. I also realized there was a glitch with MIA. Updated.

A quick Google search shows that the FAA considers “Large airport hubs” to be those that see at least 1% of total US emplanements, but does anyone know what that number is??

Seems like BNA is close to joining this group (on track through Nov ‘19 to likely exceed 9 million enplanements and 18 million total passengers for 2019)

According to this..

https://www.statista.com/statistics/197 ... ince-2004/

It's 888m for 2018 for US airlines, that obviously doesn't include Foreign airlines, so I think on that basis BNA is close, but maybe not quite there.

Very interesting article and graphic.

Some of the upcoming airports are known and discussed in the thread and the ones that declined were incumbent hubs once upon a time.

Thank you for the quick answer. If I may ask one more, about what position would you guess that HNL would occupy on the top 30?

Based on 2018 ranking, it is Number 29 - ahead of PDX.

BWI's international pax number is also off. I think you only counted foreign carrier passenger numbers, which excludes Southwest and Spirit international passengers and charter passengers. I don't have the total number offhand (BWI's website is missing August data) but the number for January-October excluding August is 906,579. Including August, the number might be close to 1 million.

SFO’s international figures have got to be incorrect. Are they truly that low?

Members should not post threads about "2019 total traffic" until full-year stats for all airports being discussed, through December, are available! Waste of time otherwise.

BNA is the busiest of the 31 MEDIUM airports but last year there was a big gap between BNA and PDX.

The Central Region (CE) has no LARGE airports and only three MEDIUM airports. Other than Alaska it has the least traffic of the FAA regions
The Northeast Region (NE) has only one LARGE airport (BOS) and one MEDIUM airport (BDL in Connecticut)

Way off. That’s probably just the enplanement number. SFO Int’l traffic grew another 10% in 2019 and is 4th for Int’l traffic after JFK, LAX and MIA.

Thank you folks. This is attributable to human mistake (that's me). I made the change to SFO international numbers.

SFO 48,384,956 12,845,491 26.55% 48,699,342 -0.65% 57,793,313 7 Oct-19
The number should be 12,845,491 for 2019 YTD.

You are correct. I did not know NK and WN fly international and that was my miss. There is another way in the report except tedious but that factors the international pax including charter and scheduled carriers. Your estimate is correct and international pax is 1,018,987.

BWI 22,361,449 1,018,987 4.56% 22,692,165 -1.46% 27,145,831 22 Oct-19

IAD had 20,788,659 thru October 2019. DCA had 20,022,215 thru Oct 2019. You were using the DCA Nov-Oct number for DCA and the DCA Jan-Oct number for IAD.

DCA international pax is about 300k for 2019, not 718k.

Wow! SEA, MSP are some of the few airports who are very good in publishing numbers earnestly. That does not take out SEA progression. Wow!

So how accurate is the list?

As already corrected, IAD was already way off but all the revisions have me questioning the integrity of the data.

I have ensured I do not make the same mistakes again. I use the data from the websites quoted and it was my misses in some columns that had corrections.

There's no way that SAN's international numbers could be correct above.

How could it possibly be at 83K with scheduled service by 4 longhaul carriers and a handful of shorthaul int'l? ...that's barely 230/pax per day. The BA flight alone does more than that.
I myself, suspect a more prosaic motive... ~Thranduil
