Odd Delta routes out of ANC right now

Sat Jan 04, 2020 9:40 pm

Noticed a couple odd routes from ANC today, likely diversions. Wondered if anyone had additional info on it.

Right now there’s a 763 going to Alexandria LA with a 752 going to ANC from Alexandria plus another 763 from JFK to ANC all with 89XX or 88XX flight numbers

DL 88XX and 89XX numbers are charters and any charter going to AEX is almost certainly military (Ft Polk).

Definitely. That routing and those flt numbers have “military charter” written all over them.

There's no war. Dumb comment.

We have 1.3 million active-duty troops all over the world whose presence keeps the peace. Sustaining them is what the flights you saw are a normal part of doing.

(Moving 750 troops to Kuwait as a deterrent is a drop in the bucket; a piece of cake. 750 troops is 3 C-5s with troops and gear, and they'd still have room to bring some armor and/or artillery. Or two Atlas 747-400s or Omni 777-300s, again with room to spare, with the gear to come separately. Much of the gear is moved by container. A C-5 can carry six Apaches at once, or two Abrams tanks or an Abrams and two Bradleys. And there's a lot of gear still/already in Kuwait.)

Definitely charters for Ft. Polk. It's rather amazing to be driving along I-49 ... in the piney woods of Central Louisiana and see any ... widebody just zoom over on approach. It's fun spotting for sure! Nice little airport too for a 'nowhere'. I've seen many 747's, 767's, DC10's .. you name it - over the years.

Troop compartment carries 73 troops, so ten C-5 loads. But, we never trooped the C-5, all commercial. There were two sets of cargo floor troop seats, used about a half dozen times. Katrina evacuation out of New Orleans, pax were “floor loaded”; probably never before or since. Well, maybe Saigon evacuation and Babylift.

KAEX used to be an F-100, A-7, A-10 base. One of the main streets is named in honor of a classmate and fellow A-10 Pilot- Jeff Watterberg, killed in an A-10.

You ever lift 2 M1s at once? I’d expect lots of tanker visits trying to get that load from CONUS to the sandbox.

I M-1 to Mog from Savannah—4 ARs. Two was a useless load in an A model, too heavy. Armor to the ME is a ship load.

I have been in the troop compartment on the C-5, so I know about the 73 seats (with lots of legroom) up there. I was referring to the capacity if one added in the 267 main deck seats, although I do know that the aircraft rarely has been used for that kind of transport since Vietnam. It was just an illustrative point on my part -- you can run 750 troops into anyplace that regularly sees US military aircraft without much fuss or notice if you want to, whether on another grey-painted plane or an Omni or Atlas charter.

The Galaxy is an amazing aircraft.
