The need to connect more dots to LAS on the west coast, and allow for more connections. With so many red eyes leaving LAS eastbound it would allow for many options. Or fly to more cities from their “hubs” (PHX only flight to a “hub” is DFW) and seasonally ord

ORD-PHX
ORD-RSW

Maybe to cover the A319 that had an accident in BQN.

The LL ship in question is N758MA - a 738:

https://www.flightradar24.com/data/aircraft/n758ma

The affected flights were:

NK121 ORD-RSW
NK220 RSW-ORD
NK1167 ORD-PHX
NK1168 PHX-ORD

Nothing is loaded for Monday (20JAN20), but it appears the affected flights will see N922NK, an A320neo, on Tuesday 21JAN20.

Two questions:

1. When did the BQN incident occur?

2. Did you ever think you'd see the day when a 738 would be covering an NK flight?

March 10 is the last flight for EWR-SDQ and MCO-SDQ, not sure why they cancelled because in the same day F9 is starting EWR-SDQ and in april adding SJU and MIA into SDQ, and B6 is adding the 2nd flight from MCO-SDQ in june. Looks like they want to make stronger FLL because NK also in june is adding a 2nd flight FLL-SDQ

It's pretty simple if you look at the prices. Taking a look at Mar 16.

Right now, UA is price matching F9 at $95 for BE on EWR-SDQ. B6 at JFK is at $115 to SDQ. DL is price matching them. Iirc, DR has one of the highest taxes for flights at over $100 per R/T. And then you factor in the $25 CPE at JFK/EWR. That means F9/UA is only getting $10 revenue at that fare level. F9 isn't going to last long on EWR-SDQ at the far level.

When fares are this low and taxes/CPE is that high, no way for ULCCs to compete. I really have no idea what F9 is doing here. They will be gone from many of these EWR routes before you know it.

But remember they dont sell all seats same price, also all of them are charging 30.00 for 1 suitcase, what I see is competition. Before that route was serve by UA with 1 daily flight in 2017, in 2018 came into the game B6 with 1 daily flight too, then UA increased to 2 daily flighs, then came play Spirit and UA added a 3rd daily flight..

Hopefully NK comes to SLC once the new terminal opens which would provide more gate space. Would like to see them try SLC-LAX/DFW/LAS/IAH. It’s definitely a hole in their route network.

Well when B6 add a 2nd. flight will be 6 daily flights to EWR, JFK has 8 dialy flights in low season and increase in winter and the growing of EWR didnt affect the growing on JFK route.

The demand seems to be almost never ending, it has more than tripled within 3 years without effecting any other route and you think F9 will ditch it right away? The only reason NK dropped the EWR route was in exchange for another SJU flight, reports indicate the flights were going out full too. The only route I can see F9 dropping from EWR is ONT.

NK adding BNA-ORD, BNA-DFW, and BNA-DTW nonstop service might happen with Nashville being a major leisure destination and with ORD, DFW, and DTW being three of the largest NK stations that NK doesn't currently serve nonstop from BNA.

How many gates does NK have at their bases in places such as FLL, ORD, LAS?

Also, how many turns do they do on average per gate per day?

FLL has at least 11 gates. LAS has 10 gates. BWI has 7 gates. ORD has 4 gates. MSY has 4 gates. At MSY the average is around 5 turns per gate per day.

Spirit certainly surprised me when they took 4 gates. That's basically the same usage as a legacy, compared to WN which often does more than 10 turns per day. It does seem like they have a couple of mini banks where 3-4 planes are on the ground at the same time. Still, there's plenty of room for more flights.

What I find interesting is that Frontier parked all of their CEO planes and are only flying the 320 NEO.

Spirit is parking all of their 320 NEOs and operating their 28 daily round trips with a mixture of 319s/320s/321s CEOs.
The NEOs are parked at DFW/AFW

the parked CEOs are at YIP, LAS, ACY, LBE, DTW, MCO, LCQ, FLL

so the planes appear to be parked for the short term and not at long term desert airports like the other airlines.

A total of 22 planes (10 A319s, 9 A320s and 3 A321s) are being deployed to operate this schedule of 56 daily flights (28 round-trip route pairs) to 23 destinations across a dramatically reduced NK network.

This includes 14 single round trips (eg. DFW-LAX-DFW) for 28 flights; 3 single round-trip plus one-way tag-on runs (eg. FLL-PHL-FLL-ORD) for 9 flights; 3 double round-trips (eg. ORD-DEN-ORD-IAH-ORD) for 12 flights; a single triple round-trip run (DTW-ATL-DTW-IAH-DTW-LAX-DTW) for 6 flights; and a single one-way flight (DTW-LAS as NK297).

DTW boasts the most NK destinations with 7, followed by FLL, MCO and ORD with 6 each, LAS with 5, DFW and IAH with 4 each, and LAX with 3. PHL and SJU offer two destinations each, while 11 other stations (ACY, ATL, BOS, BWI, DEN, MSY, PHX, RSW, SAN, SEA and TPA) only see one flight per day.

All data, flights and equipment listed compiled via searching via FlightRadar24.com and information may be subject to change depending on circumstances not reflected at FR24 at the time of posting (2215 CDT 8APR20). Flights are listed alphabetically by IATA station code (hence why you're seeing Chicago O'Hare listed further down this list):

NK768 ATL 8:52 10:52 DTW A320

BQN will be granted as the airport is being closed to commercial traffic. For the others, I don’t see why they would be granted. The reason for dropping all of those seems to be purely financial. NYC is an interesting case as it’s currently under CDC advisory. However the CDC advisory doesn’t actually prohibit travel. It will be interesting to see how this goes.

Looks like the DOT is going to require Spirit to start flying to Albuquerque NM 3x weekly and Birmingham AL and Macon GA 1x weekly as part of its minimum service requirement. I don’t recall spirit ever operating to those cities.

Read Spirit's request for exemption from service obligations and you'll see they will not have to service the 3 cities you mention

I'm guessing they had diversions to those stations and those diversion flights were captured as "scheduled".

Any status on if NK's plans to resume transcontinental flights such as EWR-LAS or BOS-LAS. EWR-LAS shows up only after June 30th and BOS-LAS shows up after July 5th.

Curious if Spirit has any plans to actually resume those this summer.

Seems like an interesting add in my opinion but if lines up with some of the other routes they serve from EWR like IAH and CLT. United probably isn’t too happy about this one.

UA presently offers one flight a day in the market. We'll see if they respond.

It's been pretty clear for the last couple of years that a major element of the Spirit, Frontier, Sun Country and Allegiant business strategies has been to try routes (and low frequencies) that the majors haven't or won't. For example, United showed no interest in PWM-DEN until F9 started it - UA was happy to route western traffic thru ORD.

well, considering UA will offer more than 1 flight per day, I don't see it as a massive concern. NK typically only flies between city pairs once a day, I'm not sure they'll jump in to 3-4 flights a day CLE-EWR.

Yeah, UA will, as the industry adds back service, likely to restore a handful of flights a day between EWR and CLE, so I don't think one NK flight does a whole lot there, and I am not so sure what NK's point is to add it anyway. Business travel is probably going to remain very depressed for some time and these aren't P2P leisure routes. UA's former hub in CLE and the connectivity at EWR are what drive traffic between CLE and EWR and P2P business.

Keep in mind this is a time when EWR is finally not full and ULCCs can add flight at will. And they are going to do that to grab precious real estate at EWR even if its costly in the short run.

Market value of a ULCC goes up as they collect more gates and slots at constrained airports.

UA's sked now shows 2 flights on CLE-EWR for July 1st, but 7 on July 6th. That 7-flight sked may reflect not rolling forward prior months cuts yet.

AA and DL continue to show no CLE-LGA service in July. People must be learning to love I-80.

WN leaving, UA retrenching, LGA modernization making for near term traffic headaches.

Interesting. I've sort of always thought of NYC-BOS flights as being more business oriented which traditionally isn't NK's demographic. I'd imagine more leisure or family visiting oriented pax would drive or take a train or even bus. Maybe it reflects an assumption about business travel? If businesses are cutting costs they probably are less interested in traditional shuttle flights and probably more likely to book Amtrak but if NK is cheaper than Amtrak I could see some businesses using it. If you're just bringing a small bag for a day's worth of work with no plans to stay overnight NK may well be cheaper than the Acela and faster to boot. Could make sense in these days of corporate cost-cutting.
