Coulson 737 Air Tanker...Australia

Mon Jan 06, 2020 3:48 pm

Lots of well deserved enthusiasm over the arrival of the Coulson 737 Air Tanker in Sydney Australia. This joins a handful of other smaller regional size firefighting aircraft from the USA. But where is the DC-10 and 747????? Im also confused as the article titles the others as Large Air Tankers...

I've wondered the same thing . Who owns the 747 and DC-10 tankers?

I'm sure our friends down under would welcome their assistance.

According to Flightaware:

N612AX was last seen over a month ago in Santa Maria California as Tanker 910
N17085 is in Richmond, Australia operating as Bomber 911
N522AX was last in Mobile, Alabama over a month ago operating as Tanker 912
N603AX was also last in Mobile, Alabama over a month ago as Tanker 914.

Im going to hazard a guess and say that the two in Mobile are undergoing scheduled maintenance.

The article you have linked is from November 2018.

There are currently 2 x 737's, 2 x C-130's, 1 x RJ85, all known as Large Air Tankers (LAT) and the 1 DC-10, known as a Very Large Air Tanker (VLAT).

Supposedly there are 2 extra DC-10's and 2 C-130's also expected to join the effort soon.

There is also a plethora of helicopters and small fixed wing tankers/water bombers involved in the fire fighting effort. All of the aircraft and their crews have been working their butts off in some very trying conditions.

As for the DC-10 fleet:

Tanker 911 has been down under since November

Tanker 912 is in heavy MX and is scheduled to arrive in Australia on Jan 15

Tanker 914 is in heavy MX and is scheduled to arrive in Australia on Jan 25

The new arrival of another Coulson 733 should bring that active fleet down there to 2.

No idea if the Aus gov has contracted the 744 yet.

I wondered the same thing. The global super tanker 744 is at Pinal, I assume for maintenance.

The article in question is from November 2018 which is over a year ago now. The 2019/20 fire season won’t have the exact same fleet as the 18/19 fleet.

The second Coulson 737 arrived several weeks ago and has been actively involved in the fire fighting efforts.

Good thread - I was another one wondering, and good to know that more aircraft are on the way. Juan Browne (blancolirio, YouTube) made a behind the scenes video on the DC-10, and the 747 Global Supertanker back in 2018, during the 'Camp' fire. This is filmed at McClellan Reload Base, Sacramento, California. Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mW0XQI525UE

What about the russian Beriev Be-200? Maybe hard for political reasons but they already operated them in Europe with no problems.

Coulson is a Canadian based company out of Port Alberni, B.C.They were famous for flying the Martin Mars for many years.A few years ago they even flew a Martin into Coal Harbour in Vancouver.

Anyone know what the benefit is to them operating certain aircraft and separate AOC out of the U.S. is? Tax benefits?

Probably has to have a seperate AOC to operate under contract down there. That seems to be the case no matter where you go. There are Canadian Helicopter companies that send their medium helicopters to Australia, they have to either operate under a Australian companies AOC or get there own.

Tanker 911 has been in Australia for a few months (since before Thanksgiving, I believe). Tanker 912 is Finishing “A” Checks and will be moved to Albuquerque to prep for the flight “Down Under” after some test flights are accomplished. There is talk of a third DC-10 joining the fight too, but I doubt all four will wind up down there in case something happens Stateside or elsewhere.
