Why did Porter suspend service to MLB?

Tue Jan 07, 2020 2:14 pm

Hello:

Why did Porter suspend to Florida? What is all about? Dash 8 is not enough fuel to destinations safety or not enough booking reservation low?

See the source:

https://www.routesonline.com/news/38/ai ... uspension/

Any comments please post.

Thanks,

Q

MLB Incentives probably expired and are now headed to TUI.

PD can still connect pax to Florida thru B6 network.

That's a long way to fly on a propjet!

Those routes were once a week, or in one case twice a week... clearly there wasn't much demand to be had, there.

A friend of mine works for Porter and he told me that the routes operated on a shoestring, since the flights were load limited to about 35-40 passengers and it often was stretching the limits of what can be done in a Dash 8.
My other car is an A320-200

Because Toronto Bishop Airport has a short runway cannot be full load and fuel weight for meduim-long range for a limit run take-off rolls.

I doubt it had much to do with demand but rather pushing the limits of a DH4’s capabilities/ability to earn adequate revenue/yield on long leisure routes.

Was that also happening with the YQG and YOW-MLB flights where runway lengths aren’t an issue?

It appears that Windsor and Ottawa didn't actually operate.

Load factors for YTZ:

Dec 2018 5 flights 51% south, 24% north
Jan 2019 3 flights 21% south, 68% north
Feb 2019 7 flights 57% south, 43% north
Mar 2019 9 flights 51% south, 61% north
Apr 2019 2 flights 19% south, 26% north

I have to imagine it's hard to attract people to fly YTZ-XXX-Florida versus just taking one of the many nonstops between YYZ and Florida on any given day. Even harder when you need to extend that connection in XXX to clear US immigration/customs (versus either pre-clearing at YYZ or clearing at your destination if leaving from YTZ...it's one thing to just clear at your destination, it's another to have to build in a longer connection to clear at some place like BOS).

Porter is reducing their flying right now as they reconfigure airplanes, so they are short frames. Getting new cabins.

And I thought YYC-YZF was painfully long. Brutal.

When is preclearance opening at YTZ? What new routes can be added by PD with preclearance?

While it existed, YOW-MLB was the longest.

YOW and YQG-MLB did operate weekly for two winters including last winter. In fact at YQG there were ads for winter 2019-20 as recently as August 2019.

Given how 1/3 of their fleet is idle on Saturdays, I can’t imagine that had anything to do with dropping MLB.
