Spirit continues expansion in Colombia

Tue Jan 07, 2020 11:35 pm

Spirit has announced today that it will continue expanding in Colombia's secondary markets from Fort Lauderdale.

Starting April 2020, the airline will begin 3x weekly service from Fort Lauderdale to each Barranquilla (BAQ) and Bucaramanga (BGA). This is in addition to the airline's already healthy presence in Colombia which consists of daily FLL-BOG, FLL-MDE, FLL-CLO services, 4x weekly FLL-CTG and 3x weekly FLL-AXM flights. They also fly MCO-BOG daily, MCO-MDE and MCO-CTG twice weekly each.

Great to see the airline investing more in Colombia; BGA comes as a particularly nice surprise, IIRC this is the first time ever this city sees nonstop service to the USA (its only current international service is CM to PTY). Barranquilla sees daily service to Miami by AV and AA.

Well this marks NK's return to the BAQ market after they operated daily and failed AFAIK because of a horrible schedule. Let's hope this time at less frequency and hopefully a nicer departure time ex-BAQ (they used to fly BAQ-FLL at 330 am or something), the flight will do well.

BGA is indeed a very nice surprise by NK. It is a metro area of over 1m and one of the richest regions in the country, but without many outside links. I'm sure BGA will do well on it's first US flight.

Congrats to NK on being the most innovative US carrier in the colombian market! (to a certain extent AA also innovates but NK has done very bold moves)

Nice. Been a while since we've seen FLL score an all-new intercon route prior to service attempt to MIA, no?

Same metro, I know, but interesting in terms of the dynamics of how the two gateways compete.
I myself, suspect a more prosaic motive... ~Thranduil
