Iran admits to accidentally shooting down Ukraine Flight 752

Other accounts on twitter say Iranian state media reports it had a “technical fault after taking off”... totally unconfirmed, but if it was indeed a Ukrainian airliner, would imagine it would be PS752 headed to Kiev based on the timeline

I'm sure information is very scarce at this moment and who knows how accurate it is, but it's apparently being reported as a "technical issue"

A Boeing 737 jet crashed in Iran shortly after take off due to a technical issue, Iranian state-run news outlet ISNA reported. The plane, which was carrying 180 passengers and crew, was bound for Ukraine.

The plane involved is UR-PSR, FR24 shows the plane climbed to 8000 feet and then the tracking stopped.

Yes. If they could deduce that so fast maybe should have brought them in on the MAX investigations. They would figure it out in about 5 seconds. Geniuses.

They could have this information if the pilots relayed something to ATC.

But yes, their quick response on the cause raises more doubt honestly. Have to see how this plays out, problem is we may never know much given the country involved.

Where is Ukraine seen by Iran in all this? Not saying that this has anything to do with the missiles launched a few hours before and possible responses... but this would take the cake for "spy thriller" and "plot device" if it isn't.

Hmm, yeah, interesting. Though it could just be a kneejerk response if they know they didn't shoot it down. But I guess it could be a kneejerk response if they did shoot it down...

Makes me wonder how or why it would happen. I'm sure their air defense forces are on super high alert but from where the aircraft originated, the squawk, etc, it should be obviously an airliner. But it wouldn't be the first time an airliner from Iran got shot down...

RIP to those (assumed) dead. Whatever happened, I hope it doesn't not escalate things...

SQUWAK codes are extremely important over war territories. I’m not sure if Iran has the technology but certain ground to air missiles fire automatically when certain codes are detected.

Absolutely horrible. I pray that there are survivors. This could not have worse timing for the Iranians.

In the event that the Iranians shot the aircraft down on accident, let us not forget the time a state of the art US Warship managed to "mistake" an Iranian A300 for an F14...

Why would they shoot down an airplane legitimately taking off from the centre of their own country? I just can't really fathom how they would make such a gross mistake, unless their airspace had been massively breached already, in which case civilian flights would have been grounded.

As for a terror attack, that would seem like an unlikely target, unless they targeted someone aboard specifically.

I'll wait for the details, but sorting through the general chaos and hysteria is going to be tough.

In any case, I'll wait until the mainstream media reports on this. There is no confirmation of anything so far, just internet-propagated rumors.

Ah yes, the prestigious daily mail. Tell me, what on Earth does the US shooting down an airliner have in common with Lockerbie except that both were deliberate drownings of aircraft? What kind of mental gymnastics does it take to conclude that this was a threat? Sounds more to me a reminder of what Iranians perceive as American war crimes.

The US suspended all flights over the Gulf hours before the plane crashed. Did the US know something in advance?

Sunrise per google is 7:15... based on FR, the flight took off around an hour before that, so seems plausible

Every situation is different but I wouldn't expect a simple engine fire to down a 737. IIRC they're even designed to burn off before taking the aircraft down with it.

The fact that there was some sort of fire as it went down is troubling (assuming the video is legit.) Hmm

Looking at the early ADS-B data it would have to been a fire that escalated extremely quickly as the flight looks very normal up until contact is lost.

Why would Iran blow up a Ukranian plane? Unless of course it's a mistake. Aviation is very easy to victimise unfortunately.

Agreed. Not sure of the motive here, if this was indeed an attack. Was someone important on board? Were there Americans? I'm hoping it's highly coincidental, but it doesn't exactly look that way, at this point.
