Would BA ever move their Stansted operations to Southend?

Fri Jan 17, 2020 11:50 am

A couple of airlines have now moved/are moving certain flights/operations from STN to SEN, to make the most of the cheaper landing fees etc. Loganair flight to/from Derry and now Wideroe to/from Kristiansand. I'm sure other airlines/flights which operate from SEN have been chosen over what may have been STN, before SEN opened. And I'm sure this will continue to happen too.

Given SEN is the diversion airport for BA Cityflyer flights to/from LCY (please correct me if I'm wrong) - and not that this should be a sole reason - but as there are only a few seasonal/weekend flights anyway, would BA ever consider moving these flights from STN to SEN? Appreciate STN is arguably a more 'premium' airport over SEN - but not THAT much more premium? It's the same type of flights/demographic of flyers, but just on much bigger scale.

LCY and BA Cityflyer are all about short check-in times, small terminal, quick arrival to public transport etc. - everything that SEN is, but STN isn't.

Could it be a possibility?

Commercial decisions are not made on "a possibility". SEN has a problem with it's immediate catchment area, in that if you draw any meaningful radius from the airport you get a whole lot of water and fish and not nearly enough people. It's Southend-on-Sea and whereas they will do well with getting edge cases poached from elsewhere on the basis of price, I don't see it happening en-masse.
Given LCY are now looking to remove the weekend curfew completely (quelle surprise!) , the whole STN operation would likely be moved to home base at the drop of a hat.

Thanks for your response - makes sense. Didn’t realise this re. the curfew. When was this decided?

these 2 airports are called London airports but they actually serve different catchment areas, Cambridgeshire and Rochford district. Those local STN customers wont be happy about a move to SEN. Essential clients to London City are using either LHR or LCY.
