Delta 1114 off taxiway at MCI

Fri Jan 17, 2020 4:40 pm

While preparing for takeoff this morning, Delta A319 N315NB operating flight DL1114 slid off the taxiway at MCI due to icy conditions. From the pictures and article, only the nose wheel slid of the pavement.

Sounds like braking action nil on taxiways. Doubt there is much damage if any. More of a fluff piece.

Looks like MCI is currently NOTAM'ed closed again as I type this. Gotta love winter in the midwest!

We have indeed been having some miserable weather in the MCI area today. Around the time this was happening I was on the roads with most of my vehicle covered in a sheet of ice except the windows. Watched two vehicles slide into an intersection attempting to stop at a traffic light.

Loved how CNN erroneously referred to DL flight 1114 as DL flight A319.

More "Fake News" lol.

This is actually a bit more common than you'd think but rarely on an A319. It's happened to UA at ORD on 739ERs at least 1-2 times a year since they phased out flying much of the domestic 757s.

I was supposed to operate a Delta Connection flight this morning to MCI, but shortly before we closed the door, the field condition at MCI rapidly worsened to freezing rain (the A319 had slid off minutes before that new weather report came out of course, we later deduced!). The airport then posted a several hour closure, and after a few delays, the plug was pulled on our flight. Delta held all its flight at their origin, but American and United still launched many of their flights. However they all turned out to be round trip scenic tours back to home base instead  The airport had zero arrivals for a period of about 6 hours.

Some screenshots I took:

Several things can trigger it - ATC halting arrivals due to rapidly deteriorating weather, airport operations determining the runway condition is too poor, and/or pilot reports that conditions are now poor. A pilot reporting a braking action of nil, or in this case, an aircraft sliding off an icy taxiway, can all be triggers. I remember the massive ice storm DTW had last year; a mechanic friend of mine working that evening watched a Delta Connection CRJ land and slide the entire length of DTW’s 12,000 foot runway. The tower came on and announced the field was now closed!
