British Airways Schedules A380 To Las Vegas - First A380 To LAS?

Sun Jan 19, 2020 6:24 pm

British Airways temporarily schedules the Airbus A380 for its London Heathrow to Las Vegas route: https://www.routesonline.com/news/38/ai ... -jan-2021/

This will only operate between January 2 to January 10, 2021 for CES (surprisingly scheduled this far in advanced)

This A380 is coming from one of British Airways’ London Heathrow to Los Angeles flights, so that flight will temporarily switch to the Boeing 747-400.

It departs London at 4:45 p.m. and arrives in Las Vegas at 7:00 p.m.
It departs Las Vegas at 9:00 p.m. and arrives in London at 2:55 p.m. (next day)

Is this the first ever schedules A380 service to Las Vegas? I can't seem to find anything on previous flights.

Airlines are increasingly operating upgauged jets for CES, with AA even adding LAS-NRT for this week. It’s nice seeing BA get in on the act. LAS almost becomes a mini-oneworld hub for a week!

I thought LAS refused to invest in A380 infrastructure... When did this change?

From memory, there were 2 issues, the weight on the tunnel and taxiway spacing.

As of 5 years ago the tunnel issue was dealt with, the taxiways are still an issue, but, with one flight a day they can work around it.

Gate D22 is the only gate equipped with a jet-bridge large enough for the A380.

Just to confirm, this gate was solely modified specifically to handle the A380, so to answer everyone's question, yes, LAS is perfectly capable of handling an A380, with a few operational adjustments.

Right. Likely just do what LAX do... OPS car driving alongside a taxiing A380. . .

Makes sense. We will still have the two other flights and that is a 744 time of year anyway...

I am certain it is not the primary purpose (likely that is more of a marketing thing), but the scheduling this far out probably helps with a lot of the periodic and scheduled MX visits on the 388 fleet, especially as they have only 12 of those.
