(No) Safety demonstration?

Good morning,

on today’s SN-flight from MAN to BRU, a group of young travelers were singing, yelling, and so on, during the whole flight. Not only did it annoy other passengers on this early morning service, but what concerned me more than the annoying part is that they started being that loud shortly before the crew did the safety demo. I was not able to understand a single word during the demo and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one.

Isn’t this actually a safety related issue or am I wrong? How can I follow crew instructions when I can’t hear them? How can I put on an oxygen mask when I didn’t hear how to do it?

Not trying to be picky here, just curious as to whether this is an actual safety related issue, and your experience with such a situation? Thanks!

At the airline I work for, we are told that if passengers are a distraction during the demo to get their attention and ask them to be quiet for the duration. The sucky thing is a lot of crew are hesitant to do it due to the "I'll do whatever I want" nature of people these days.

Well, there is one way in the US to make them be quiet: remind them that it is mandatory for them to comply with crew instructions, including those that say "STFU so we can do the safety demo", or they will be deplaned.
I think some FAs are on a power trip using this mandate; but I also think some travelers need to be reminded they are not alone in that plane.
