BSL reaches new record of over 9 million pax in 2019

Tue Jan 21, 2020 3:59 pm

An increase of 6% over 2018; the 7th busiest airport in France. Great news for my current local airport!

Better food options would be great. I don't like this airport.

More than 50% of flights out of BSL are flown by easyJet. The 6% growth means 524,545 additional passengers used the airport. I believe it's in 2019 that TS doubled its frequencies to YUL with their A321LR.

(maybe a stupid question, but anyway...) is the 6% increase counted for all the traffic ex. Basel-Airport or only for the "French part" (MLH as origin/destination).

All traffic ex-BSL. Flights to/from the “Swiss side” and the “French side” are one and the same now that Switzerland is part of Schengen.

It could certainly be felt. There were a lot of instances last year where the airport ground to a complete halt because the passport control couldn't keep up. I know a bunch of people who missed flights in those instances.

And it is still a special situation as there are different custom rules. So while you can travel free between the EU and Switzerland your goods can not. That is one of the reasons there is still a French and a Swiss "exit".

I still remember that before Switzerland entered Schengen, BSL and MLH sides had separate outgoing pax flow (at least up to a point). A cafe had a counter facing Swiss side (prices in CHF) and French side (prices in FRF, later EUR). It was mentioned that technically, VAT was collected at a different rate, too. No idea if that is still the case, or if the cafe is duty-free.

It still is. Arriving on the Swiss side and going to the French, you have to go up to the departures area and walk through to the French half.
