Garuda Retro Livery: Error in Painting?

Wed Jan 22, 2020 8:42 pm

Check out the text under the cheatline at the nose: "BRAND LOGO 1969-1985." Did a corrupt image file get sent to the painters? Is it a placeholder for a future decal?

I think it's showing when that paticular livery was in use, 1969-1985....

Ah, could be. Seems weird they'd print it on the plane, no?

Why is this weird? It is a retrojet and Garuda had this paint scheme 1969-1985.....

The use of the term ‘BRAND LOGO’ is a little odd, although I get what they are saying (it was the Brand’s logo/livery those dates). Not sure how else I would succinctly phrase it though.

Maybe they are expecting a percentage of their passengers to balk at boarding "an ancient plane" due to the retro paint job so they added an explanation that it's a retro paint job and that was the most succinct way they could be obvious about it

I like that they thought to list when the livery was used. I probably would have worded it differently, but oh well.

Nice looking 777!

If the bottom was grey and the Indonesian airways titles in black then the retro livery would actually be accurate.

If only there was a photo database where we could examine & compare these liveries.
Oh wait, there is.
Now, if only there was a method for displaying these photos side by side so that those who couldn't remember the original livery could be reminded.
Oh wait, there is.

Here ya go.
As the years passed, the livery morphed and varied somewhat.

I'm seeing a thin white cheat line below the orange/red bands, and above the bare metal that cannot be accurately replicated these days (shame!)

Here's a DC-10 with RED titles, however most photos do indeed show black (including other DC-10s)

The lower white line is thicker & particularly noticeable on the F-28, but completely absent from the DC-8 & DC-9.
These earlier photos also come with both "garuda" (in red) and "indonesian airways" (in black)
Maybe there were two versions of this scheme between 1969 and 1985?

Doesn't seem weird at all. Actually it's a very useful explanation.

The retro livery GA 737s also have the 'brand logo 19xx - 19xx' on them. Seems unlikely it was a mistake.

That could possibly be the most lazy and uninspiring livery I've ever seen.

It's historic representation.

Rather odd that they would have "brand logo" as the labelling considering it would be a lot more in sync with the reason for the aircraft to call it "garuda image/livery/aircraft 1969-1985" it of calling it the rather tame and corporate/unimaginative "brand logo" wtf is that!? You don't even link it to the airline or the global image of the airline represented in the entire reason for the aircraft retro paint scheme!

Dumb design choice.

At least it's not "Brand_Logo_1969-1985.png"

At least Garuda still applies a retro scheme on their new aircraft.
Still waiting for VN to do the same thing because with me VN's 1990s livery looks so damn good.

Yes, that looks good to me. The font looks like the one that SAS uses. Thai had it as well in the past.
But I like VN's current livery even better! :) One of the best liveries in the sky. It is not often that applying a retro scheme would mean a step back, in my eyes at least.

Livery updates nowadays tend to make things worse. See Lufthansa, see Iberia, Aer Lingus, JAL etc. When was the last time that a new livery looked better than the old one? So to me at least, retro schemes are a welcome exception.

Back on topic, I like the Garuda scheme, but only because it brings back good memories of my spotting days at Amsterdam-Schiphol as a boy, not because the livery itself is very special. I must say I also find the 'brand logo' script a bit strange. Perhaps Garuda expected that many people wouldn't know the word "livery". "Brand logo" may not be accurate; at least many people have an idea of what it means.
