National's first A330 N819CA delivered

Thu Jan 23, 2020 9:42 am

Hi to you all,

National accepted its first A330-200 N819CA - an ex ThomasCook UK a/c. However, the same registration was used for an A330 of former Kingfisher/ArikAir history - but never taken up... Any idea why National not accepted the former Kingfisher/ArikAir airframe, despite being already painted?

Just found this press release: https://www.prnewswire.com/news-release ... 91413.html

National has plans to introduce two additional Airbus 330 family aircraft into its fleet by early 2021

Any more infos regarding the identity of the 2 additional A330s?

Pretty sure it hasn’t left Opa-locka (Miami).

Is this one of the weird TCX A330’s that has a downstairs toilet?

Flightradar24 shows it's still in OPF. Last flight was AMA-OPF back on December 23.
Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

No, this is Ex TCXD which had only just been delivered to MT from AV. The ones with downstairs toilets I believe are MLJL, OMYT, MDBD I'm unsure if CHTZ did.

Interesting thanks for the rundown, I do wonder how much the resale value of those A330 will be affected by the toilet, I think an FA had to sit down there at all times when the seatbelt sign was off and thats no good for saving money on FAs.

I bagged 2 flights on these aircraft, and while a novelty for passengers, they were impractical from a crew usage standpoint. You are correct that a cabin crew member had to be stationed down there for the entire flight. Apparently it was nicknamed "the fart capsule".

As a passenger, I enjoyed it, and I walked up and down the stairs several times during the flight simply to stretch my legs.

In these days of staffing aircraft with the minimum of cabin crew as possible, I can't imagine they will be popular on the second hand market.

Did not National go bankrupt or close to it?

Correct TCX did have a crew member down there permanently during the flight when the seatbelt sign was off. Thomas Cook still operated the 330 with minimum operating crew, however an additional “service” crew member was added to these flights with the “LDL” lavatories, and this crew member didn’t have any safety related duties, literally just turn up and sit by the bogs and get a few days overseas.

The original National Airlines (NA) operated from 1934 to 1980 when it merged with Pan Am. A second iteration (N7) was based in Las Vegas that operated between 1999 and 2002. It went bankrupt and ultimately ceased operations. This third iteration is National Air Cargo (N8) based in Orlando, FL.
Look, it's been swell, but the swelling's gone down.

why a FA must be there? It is not the first time we have toilets downstairs and never heard about the requirement before.

National Air Cargo filed for bankruptcy in October 2014, and spent more than three years in Chapter 11.
