Hawaiian 787 Delivery Schedule

Thu Jan 23, 2020 10:34 am

Greetings all,

I understand that Hawaiian Airlines will begin taking delivery of 10 787-9 aircraft next year, 2021. Does anyone know what the delivery schedule will be, and how many 787’s will be delivered next year or the year after?

Thank you

In the original announcement, I recall Q1 2021 being mentioned.

According to aerotransport.org, 3 will be delivered in 2021, 4 in 2022, and the final 3 in 2023.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

I still question the decision to split their widebody fleet between 2 completely different types. Boeing must have really discounted and pushed the 787 hard. The A330-800 would have been a great fit, or even the -900 if HA was so concerned about dealing with an unwanted type.

And apart from the new Hawaiian Boeing 787 will have new business class! I imagine that the first routes of the dreamliners will be to Japan destinations like Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya

I bet some of the 717 pilots are salivating at the upgrade opportunity. Others I'm sure enjoy the local flying and will stay put.

IIRC it was the Boeing/GE combo which made an offer HA couldn’t refuse. There were also some B767 involved in the deal.

What’s stopping the 717 guys from going to the 330 or the NEO?
Plus the “be home every night” aspect of interisland is a huge draw.

Nothing would stop them from the A330, Except that Boeing/GE made them a better offer and a plane flown in the USA and around the world. Who in the USA aside from Delta flies the A330, and Who flies the 787? And there you have your answer! It was a shrewd tactical move by Boeing..

Because the A330 is currently completely staffed? Do you not see that bringing in more widebodies opens up more upgrades?

From what I have gathered from friends of friends, The older A330's are going away with the 787's replacing them almost 1 to 1 rather than for widebody growth.

I don't know how credible that is but it would make sense

Many of the 717 pilots are there by choice since they can be home every night... especially parents. When I was an F/A there were some very senior pilots who stayed interisland for that reason. Also, many senior F/As work the AM interisland pairings because they can pick the kids up from school, etc.

Oh ok. I didn't know that. Maybe Boeing made some deal to get them out of the A330 leases.

As I understand, the first 10 787’s are for straight growth and there are no plans to retire any of the current fleet. (Maybe it’s the 10 options that would be used for replacements?)... Anyone else have any insight into this, one way or the other?

Correct. Initially the 787s will be for growth. Over time there may be some 330 replacements, but since some leases were just extended and half the 330 fleet is owned, there appears to be lots of flexibility baked into HAL's widebody fleet plans.

That makes sense. So they might have some new hires go right to the 787 if the first ten are for growth.
