Very surprised they didn’t postpone the flight to another day before they started today’s event. Should be pretty easy to predict the weather 24 hours in advance.

It probably was the 767 but are you aware of how loud 777 engines are on start up? They can be heard over all the other aircraft at LHR so we should definitely hear them start here.

Yes I do know how loud the 777 engines are. I've flown on 777-300ER and 777-200ER many many times and I've heard them far away. But from the camera vantage point, the plane is quite far far away. I doubt the sound of the engine was from the 777-9. The engine start up that we all heard sounds like it could have been from a 777-300ER.

You guys do realize that the engines on the 77X are different than the 777s you're used to, right? Specifically, these are quieter...

That's besides the point. Even if it's the same sound, it's not the same plane that we are hearing and seeing on the webcast, that's what people are mistaken.

Unfortunately https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.p ... 4999999995 suggests the upcoming Seattle area weather is going to be quite wet.

A first flight just needs to meet very special conditions regardless of people waiting. It's good to not force it.

This is a scam. In big capital letters.

They knew about the crap weather - forecasts are not that bad forecasting the future weather!

But obviously they need a positive press news in the press... ASAP. They hoped perhaps todays was/is the day... but it does look like a further negative press release.

I don't think its such a "big deal" afterall. A transparent response and explanation is all Boeing needs.

Why would it be a black eye? They are at the mercy of the weather.

Considering all of the talk about safety lately I highly doubt they will push the envelope...

A scam? Who is scamming whom?

That Boeing would choose the more risk-averse strategy of NOT flying the aircraft in adverse conditions is encouraging.

You should demand a refund.

If the press releases are negative, it'll be saying a lot more about the press than Boeing.

They thought they may have a shot at a flight, they gave it ago, there's really nothing else to say.

They undoubtedly are waiting for a possible hole in the weather where they could sneak out and get the flight done today. Covering all the bases.

I understand the reasons for taking off over water, but if the aircraft were using 16R instead of 34L the flight would've been over an hour ago.

My point was that as much as I love this site, I read too many threads which turn into a slanging match rather than an informative discussion. We'll all be back tomorrow I guess to try again :)

Boeing knew they needed perfect weather to make a great impression for this first flight; they indeed need the good PR.
Boeing has been teasing us with the first flight today since earlier this week, even when the weather forecast was not the best.

I agree it's not the end of the world that the 777-9 doesn't fly today; it'll happen, soon.
But, all the media hype that Boeing created around this (poorly planned) event is going to backlash on them; they should have waited for a day of undoubtedly perfect weather before announcing the first flight.

Totally stupid of them to try today. And especially deceiving because the weather in the live footage has looked fine for an hour, not being able to gauge the wind from the feed.

And if they hadn't tried and it turned out to be flyable, they would have been slagged for upsetting their customer base by delaying even more.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
The heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
The heart has its seasons, its evenings and songs of its own
