They knew of the adverse weather conditions, at least, since tuestday. That´s what the weather forecast was. It´s absolutely ridiculous.

BAD planning.

What's bad is your brain. Nobody can PREDICT weather. You only estimate with a probability especially in winter conditions.

That's true, we can't predict the weather.

But when the forecast is bad, one usually doesn't even try and plans for another day.

Most if not all current Boeings are standard 10kts TW but for a few bucks more you can buy 15kts.

Is there any actual change to the aircraft for that uprating?

I'm pretty sure it's just paperwork plus some $$$. Sort started with the 737NG that were operating in Central and South America. They would arrive early am only to find that the runway in use was in excess of 10kts and either hold or divert. CAL might have been the driving force for this option?

Perhaps this has been explained but why the 10 knot restriction? Is it because it is first flight, or is this normal?

I think that's pretty standard across the industry. Not sure why they pick exactly 10 as a cutoff, there's no physics problem that blocks them from running the numbers for 11 or 12 knots and then seeing if they've got enough runway.

That's a good question.

It is also not very productive to take-off in the afternoon because they need to come back when you still have daylight. That's the life of first flight. There are many constraints.

They need to fly several hours to make the flight productive. If they can explore the flight envelope as much as possible, it would be better than just to have one short first flight.

A lot of people like flight engineers or those in the telemetry room would not be available during the weekend.
I guess they will try again next week.

Boeing knew they needed perfect weather to make a great impression for this first flight; they indeed need the good PR.
Boeing has been teasing us with the first flight today since earlier this week, even when the weather forecast was not the best.

I agree it's not the end of the world that the 777-9 doesn't fly today; it'll happen, soon.
But, all the media hype that Boeing created around this (poorly planned) event is going to backlash on them; they should have waited for a day of undoubtedly perfect weather before announcing the first flight.

Undoubtedly perfect weather? In Seattle in winter?

Have you ever spent time in Western Washington during the winter? On days like this, the weather can change at the drop of a hat. I was out for a vet appointment for all of an hour and a half earlier and saw rain, sunshine and dry overcast conditions with fluctuating levels of wind throughout. There's no reason not to think you could find a window for the aircraft to take off. It didn't work out, they'll try again
Nothing to see here.

Saying this as a guy how last week joined about 25 people from Airbus watching automation strategies at BMW regarding manufacturing Electric cars with CRFP-Body in scale (BMW i3).

Marvellous technical achievements.

That makes a lot of sense. As has been previously said, there's no rush and it will happen. We are just eager as AvGeeks and want to see her fly!

Before too long the 779 will be commonplace, but it's important to recognise a new step in commercial aviation development (which is why we're all so excited of course).

Some people here say that Boeing might try again tomorrow (Saturday).

I hope there are enough people to support it.

Unless it was already planned as the plan B, it could be difficult to gather all the required people.

This said, if they work on Saturday or Sunday they may have some overtime $$$.
