Whats the purpose of having the 777 and 787 lines? They are pretty similar in size/mission, no? Why both?

The 777X is much larger than the 787.

777-9 426pax in 2 glass 13500km
787-9 296pax 13950km
787-10 336pax 11750km

The size difference is big.
Time Will tell If Airlines think they need the size or not when we see the sales numbers over time.

I think the 777x will work very well for legacy airlines. If you have the demand to fill up the 777x it will be the favourite of the fleet and of course we know it’s easier to fill up than the 380. I think the 777x is the maximum that airlines need. The 380 went overboard. The airlines that currently have it on order will enjoy it but airline like per se SWISS might not enjoy it as much because they might not be able to reap the benefits as much as BA or Emirates who can fill up this aircraft. Aircrafts like the 787 and A350 are low risk, flexible and super efficient and you can’t go wrong with them. The 777X can be as great or even greater than the 350/787 but ONLY if you can fill it up.

Some useful background to today's first flight from the Seattle Times.

Lifted by unique wings and massive engines, Boeing 777X scheduled to finally take flight Friday morning.

The 777 looks cooler. And the 777-9 is the coolest looking of them all. So this will be an extra cool first flight.

I guess I’ll have to fight the morning traffic and go try see the thing take off.

Here is a link to FlightRadar24 at Paine Field, Everett.

The first 777-X should appear in the next hour or so when it powers up. It's 8am there.

My cousin, who's on the 777x flight test team, is understandably STOKED as heck. "It's been a long road". No kidding! I'm hopeful that things go smoothly today.

That’s interesting, why would it be parked there?

Also noticed on Flightradar24 that their B777-9 icon is the same one used as the 737.

So is FF definitely on for today?

As far as wx is concerned, it's MVFR as of the last update 50 mins ago at KPAE, with broken clouds at 028 and 042, with overcast clouds at 050. Visibility is 10 SM. I don't know if that meets the flight test team's requirements?

As of 7 min ago the conditions have degraded from MVFR to IFR, with broken clouds at 700' AGL. Winds seem largely head-on for rwy 16: 170 degrees at 16 kt w/gusts up to 23 kt.

The parking lot at the Future of Flight visitors centers is basically full. A small crowd standing on the grass.

Inside Boeing is selling a VIP pass to the viewing deck, which includes continental breakfast and a bag of souvenirs.....and a rain poncho of course.

A Dreamlifter is currently parked outside where they unload fuselage parts.

Perhaps a silly question, but is there a way to get an Alexa to play the webcast audio, i.e. "Alexa, play 777x first flight"?

I'm doing stuff all around the house and would love to hear the audio and only have to go to the computer just as takeoff is imminent.
