Thanks for the link! I was 8 or 9 at the time also, living in Huntington. I remember being with my parents in our living room when we heard a jet go overhead very, very low which was unusual for where we lived. I seem to recall feeling a rumble a couple of minutes later as well, like a small tremor, but it's hard to say for sure since it was so long ago and my memories of that night aren't all that crisp. Hearing the jet that low definitely spooked my parents, though.
Really quite incredible that anyone survived it, and that there were no casualties on the ground. It's a shame that many people did lose their lives, but given the population density of Long Island and the limited amount of time the crew had to find a place to put it down, it could have been SO much worse.
