FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

This is a schedule extension. JUN and SEP both have partial month comparison. If it is flat vs prior year it is not shown. Compare to prior year for months before AUG.
This is a bit of a strategy change. A lot more double daily markets outside Florida. Pretty much all non-daily domestic markets are gone. They area really leaving that strategy to G4 and F9. I imagine that is driven by their operational focus. Hard to get good reliability with non-daily routes.

Thanks, as always, for putting this together.

It looks like AC has loaded a lot more of the transition away from Air Georgian at YYZ. I expect many if not most of the medium-haul frequency reductions ex-YYZ will have accompanying increases in gauge, which also means those routes will get F for the first time in decades.

Another market gone and a bunch of frequency reductions for UA at IAH. And the plan is to go from 600 to 700 flights? When?

Reduction in frequencies but nice upgrade to e175s and cr9s. Seat count just about the same.

Thanks Enilria!!

Thinking UA might have a misfile or two as ORD-PVD is still showing 3 daily flights in the summer.

It appears NK also cut JAX-ORD leaving JAX-BWI as it’s only JAX route.

G4 extending some seasonal a bit longer in markets I follow. Wish they would think about connecting some eastern and summer markets to western NPs during summers.

I’m not showing MFR-ORD as bookable. Maybe filed and then removed in order to make an announcement first?

That leaves Jackson without a connection to Chicago. United, American and Southwest have all exited the market.

Look and see if all the misfiles are on the same aircraft type. Filing an invalid equipment code is the most common misfile. They may have used an internal code like 73R by mistake.

These have nothing to do with loads. This has solely to do with NK's new network structure since they changed leadership.

I had mentioned that NK adding JAX-DFW nonstop service might be a possibility with WN no longer serving DAL nonstop from JAX and with JAX being one of the few major leisure destinations in the contiguous U.S. that isn't currently served nonstop from the DFW/DAL market on a LCC. There are also some travelers on the Fort Worth side of the DFW Metroplex who would consider nonstop options out of DFW on airlines other than AA but not nonstop options out of DAL with DFW being closer to Fort Worth than DAL is.

NK adding JAX-LAS nonstop service might be also be a possibility with LAS being one of the top destinations that doesn't currently have any nonstop service out of JAX on any airline.

I'd say it is both. I think the strategy is definitely different. The increased frequency for example. The old team was afraid frequency would draw retaliation. The new team feels that frequency improves operational reliability. It will be interesting to see how that pans out.

Wow! DFW-SAF up to 5 per day. Not only that but so far they have only seen CR7's and the Jun 4 schedule now showing 3-CR9's, and 2-E75. Its not balanced though so it may change. I don't think the CR9's and E75's fair well at hot and high airports so they may have some healthy weight restrictions at SAF. Enilria--You rock!

For CLE, that's a 14% increase in available seats, plus the addition of a premium product. That's a nice addition. Looking forward to trying that aircraft on my upcoming AC flights this summer.

Last I heard (last October or November) was that UA was waiting fof the new baggage system to be finished before adding anything significant. That is, they're already misconnecting too many bags - more flights with the old system would be even worse.

Up to 25x weekly flights for Western PA-MYR this summer. Pretty crazy, but not surprising considering that Myrtle Beach is basically “Pittsburgh South” during peak season. ;)

Nice add for TUL, though I expect mediocre load factors. An add to PIE might have been better. There is a lot of traffic between TUL and TPA.

That is impressive. I don't know what the specific requirements are, but I would be surprised if a flight as short as SAF-DFW would have restrictions at SAF temperatures. They have never had an official reading break the 100F mark.

I think this increase in frequency will help draw passengers. I have often had to use ABQ when I would have preferred SAF, because the SAF schedule did not allow same day connections.

It's been more than a few months (they dropped ATL-DTW/MSP back in early June). Note that NK ATL-DTW was 3x last June as well. No question that DL is living large on the route now that WN is gone. One-way fares are $499 with no advance, and $399 with 7-day advance. It's only with a 14-day advance or more that your will find anything under $200. You can do better on DL with a roundtrip and Saturday night stay, but that's for leisure flyers, not business ones (yes, Sat night stay fares are still alive and well on legacies). Gotta a last minute DTW-ATL trip coming up and don't want to stay a Saturday night? NK is your airline.

It appears both NK and F9 are planning to maintain just a token presence in JAX. Quite odd as some of their routes had pretty decent loads.

This is a bit of a strategy change. A lot more double daily markets outside Florida. Pretty much all non-daily domestic markets are gone. They area really leaving that strategy to G4 and F9. I imagine that is driven by their operational focus. Hard to get good reliability with non-daily routes.

Thanks as always for the report, I always look forward to it!

Regarding non-daily, I still see all of MSY's non daily routes bookable on spirit's website, but not reflected here. I wonder if there was some problem with the way they filed them?

Extended through the summer I see MSY-PHL/MSP 4 weekly and MSY-CLE/CMH 3 weekly.

For the * for AC’s YOW-MCO, it typically operates daily from mid-December to mid-April (about 3-4x weekly November to mid-Dec and in the latter part of April). From May to October, about five years ago AC extended YOW-MCO to year-round with Sat/Sun service during low season, initially with an E90, then the past two summers upgauged to a mainline 319.

In other words, cutting the low season weekend flights is probably due to the MAX. It’s easy to reroute YOW pax onto YUL-MCO and YYZ-MCO flights to handle AC’s aircraft shortages. Hopefully it’ll be back to year-round once the MAX debacle is finally over. The fact that weekend YOW-MCO service is still loaded post-Labour Day, is a good sign this is strictly an aircraft shortage issue during their peak summer season, just like the recent leisure routes cuts we’ve seen in western Canada.

Anecdotally one of the 18 daily YOW-YYZ Rapidair flights is being upgauged to the 788, which coincides with the upgauging of YOW-LHR from the 763 to the 788.

SAF is at a high elevation which in concert with relatively high temperatures creates the performance issue.

If year-over-year capacity on any route, including < daily and/or seasonal, is unchanged from the prior year, it won’t show up in enilria’s OAG reports.

I suspect the equipment swaps for SAF aren't done yet fully and at least one of the frequencies will go go a CR7 as SAF has been used to rotate CR7s between the PHX and DFW hubs.

I've followed the reports for years and that's never been the case. In fact, most of the NK routes in the report this week are simply extensions with no change of frequency from last year.

Looks like NK is trying to benefit from WN ending ATL-DTW a few months ago.

I am happy to see LCCs bring some fare discipline to DL hub-to-hub routes. What NW/DL used to get on DTW-BOS before B6 (and NK, now NK gone) was egregious - even with Sat stays/21 day adv.

Glad to see F9 start BOI a month earlier this season.

That is impressive. I don't know what the specific requirements are, but I would be surprised if a flight as short as SAF-DFW would have restrictions at SAF temperatures. They have never had an official reading break the 100F mark.

SAF is at a high elevation which in concert with relatively high temperatures creates the performance issue.

What are you trying to say? I think almost everyone here understands that both elevation and heat effect performance.

You implied there should not be a performance issue because it never gets to 100 there... I'm saying there are restrictions because it's not just hot, it's also high.

I think we've gone from 2x daily (2018 and prior) to now 4x daily this upcoming summer. Looks like the route is moving from 3x on the CRJ to 4x on the E145...should make some people happy. XNA-DEN is up over 75% in passengers from Nov '18 to Oct '19 versus the previous year. Between UA and F9, they're not making my hopes of DL adding SLC for west coast connections very high.

It appears both NK and F9 are planning to maintain just a token presence in JAX. Quite odd as some of their routes had pretty decent loads.

Same for F9 at PVD. I thought what we had last summer was going to be sort of the base level service. Instead they have not loaded anything but 3x weekly MCO.

How much more can IAH stand to lose? UA is constantly eliminating flights.

UA is still up ~5% YOY with these changes. Nothing was really lost in this update. Enilria stirred people up by saying UA cut IAH-PBI but anyone with eyes can see this is just matching the same season as last year.

The route also gets some E175s this winter/spring, so there's also hope of some larger jets on the route eventually with all of UA's general growth planned for DEN.

RKS, CPR, PRC, FAT also get an additional DEN flight YOY. The planned 6th daily BOS is cut though as is an MSY rotation.

It’s down in frequency I believe but because they are using some larger aircraft to certain destinations, passenger count is up. Destination count is definitely not up. It’s down.

I'm surprised AA is able to sustain 4x day on ATL-LAX, because it's hub to hub for DL.

I am trying to get some useful information from you because you may know a lot more than I do. Again, we are all aware elevation and heat effect performance. But the question is, does it affect the possible types of planes that AA could use on this 500 mile flight in any significant way?

AA uses the same types on FLG-DFW which is roughly 600 feet higher and about 350 miles further, so I was surprised by the performance concern.

If anything it shows that Delta is either losing existing market or failing to gain new market share. Maybe they should add SLC at least seasonally at first and with AA now doing 2 a day to LA, maybe LAX and skip over the whole SLC thing. ATL and MSP is some serious backtracking for XNA and people do value time.
