Why?? Can some explain?

There is obviously plenty of flights between penang and singapore.

Why wouldnt they just fly direct to penang and back?

Most likely reason being that they don't see sufficient demand for a 77W nonstop, but wish to move in on that destination before smaller eqp arrives.

Wish arrival time into PEN was a bit better but otherwise pretty nice for people in SIN

Based on those flight times, I'm going to presume the same crew will operate DXB-SIN-PEN, otherwise that'll be 4 crews to run that flight which seems very expensive.

I guess this really shows how EK desperately needs an A330-900/787-9 sized aircraft.
First to fly the 787-9

I'm sure there will be a few pallets of cargo coming out of Penang as well.

EDIT: Linked article from OP mentions that.

Why? This is baffling. There are so many ULCCs on this route that already charge next to nothing. Is EK this desperate?

With a block time of between 7:25 and 7:30 for DXB-SIN-DXB they can crew DXB-SIN with two pilots, if you add the SIN-PEN leg you would require a third relief pilot. I’m guessing they will build a two pilot trip (DXB-SIN, LAYOVER, SIN-PEN-SIN, LAYOVER, SIN-DXB).

With cabin crew probably doing DXB SIN PEN in one shot a la DXB BKK PNH

Not sure about what the old schedule was, but maybe to increase utilisation instead of just sitting for hours at the expensive SIN?

Would be a perfect route for one of those unidentified 40xA339s sitting on Airbus order book. :)

I'm "guessing" that its more about selling seats from Europe to PEN rather than just the SIN-PEN/PEN-SIN sectors.

I am curious why the 777 spends 5 hours on the ground at Penang. Would an earlier departure miss the connecting banks at DXB?

Possibly going for a deep cabin clean, I know EK do do that at remote stations sometimes.

Because they are interested in PEN-DBX-Rest of the world. Today that market is captured by SQ and is not low cost. ULCC is for locals (Malaysians and Singaporeans to go back and forth). Considering PEN is increasing to be a retirement home and medical hub for Europeans, there is probably a good market. That said I now expect to get a cheap EK ticket to PEN without having to go AirAsia or Scoot.

I don't mind Air Asia but if I was going to Penang i'd pony up the EK premium twice gladly to avoid going Scoot again. Absolutely awful. Makes Ryanair look like Cathay Pacific.

But you are doing a double connect to go PEN-SIN-DXB-Rest of the world. That seems pretty inconvenient for me. If want to go to DXB from New York now, I could do JFK/EWR-HKG/CAN/SIN-PEN with just one connection and JFK-CAN-PEN would be far cheaper than EK.

Are you sure about the medical hub/retirement home for Europeans? I didn't see many westerners there the last time I visited. Most of the visitors if i remember correctly were from Singapore, Hong Kong or the mainland.

I also have to say that schedule is not great for singapore side traffic unless they want to leave work at 1 PM on Friday.

Evidently any 5th freedom traffic is a bonus and not the actual area of focus of this route. It's always cool to see a new 5th freedom route established in this era of aviation.

Just good luck I had no mug or glass in my hand when I read that! What a priceless comment, had me laughing so much the wife popped in to see what was up! Bet MOL would like that one, might even write it on the side of one of Ryanair's 737s!

Someone above mentioned pallets of cargo from Penang. What exactly might they be carrying? Durian? Surely not FISH!

AMD chips? My old Athlon II had this "Infused in Malaysia" writing on it. Maybe the facility is near Penang.

I'm actually surprised that they chose PEN instead of SUB. It's the 2nd biggest city in Indonesia and there's a lot of insanely rich people in East Java area (mainly cigarette tycoon) that used SUB a lot. Even the "normal rich" and middle class population are quite big there.

How about DXB-PEN-SUB or DXB-PEN-KHH or even DXB-PEN-NAN

This addition is not solely to add a new destination; it is part of a larger re-shuffle of EK services to Singapore.
The addition of this rotation (and its timings, including the extended ground time in PEN) will mean that EK will continue to offer four daily flights to DXB - EK432/433 (which extends to BNE) is set to cease in March, so this new flight will allow EK to maintain its current level of capacity, frequency and range of timings.

This new flight is timed very similarly to EK404/405 (the flights that continue on to MEL), which will assume a schedule similar to that of the flights that continue to BNE around the same time that this new route starts. EK is no stranger to tag-on flights, long and short, and to me this flight represents a low-cost opportunity to expand to a new station using an aircraft that would probably be paying parking fees at SIN otherwise (owing to the need to harmonise flight times with connection waves at DXB).

I too am surprised that EK does not fly to SUB. The timings would fit in nicely with these new flights, plus there is no backtracking involved unlike a PEN-SIN-DXB routing. Perhaps the shorter flight time allows one set of crew to operate DXB-SIN-PEN, making it less costly to operate?

Speaking of Indonesia, I am surprised that EK has not tried flights to KNO. It is a busy airport (over 12M pax in 2019) with quite a lot of demand to the Middle East and Saudi Arabia in particular (even Saudia flies there already). Maybe one for FZ to try once they get their MAX fleet back in the air?

Lots of middle East tourism to Penang. Hang out in Batu Ferringhi during the northern summer and just see how many.

I believe QR has already planned to do so, although there's no follow up on the plan. Medan is also full of rich business people and lot of higher income middle class. As a people from Jakarta, I never realised that until I have a friend from Medan. He told me that "his kind" are rarely noticed in Jakarta since they went straight to SIN/KUL to do fancier stuff, medical needs, or education. Much faster than the 2 hrs flight to Java and waaayyy nicer in terms of selection and
for Jakarta, traffic conditions.

Emirates SIN-PEN

Tue Jan 28, 2020 4:21 pm

I honestly dont know how this route is going to make money.

SIN-PEN is dominated by the Low Cost Carriers ( Air Asia, Scoot and Silk Air). Given the fact the MI is soon to be absorbed into SQ and getting premium cabin products, flat beds in JCL and PTVs in EYCLY, is there really a need for 2 premium airlines operating on such a short sector. EK either has to have prices that is comparable to SQ or cheaper than Air Asia. Thoughts?

They probably won’t be relying on traffic from SIN for PEN. They’re probably looking at originating traffic that is west of DXB.

As per Sam Chui, Emirates is charging SGD118 (Return) vs LCCs charging SGD200 on SIN-PEN route.

What ? Never paid more than 120sgd for this route (even only a few days out) with Jetstar or Scoot, I don't know where he is getting his numbers from

He is apparently getting his numbers out of thin air. I just priced AirAsia at SGD80-something for the same dates and similar times. Scoot was SGD 109. Silkair was around SGD130-150. Did not check JetStar.

It really depends on the period you are searching for. Sam Chui is accurate, Emirates are selling flights on May to June period with an average cost of SGD$118 for a round-trip from SIN to PEN.

I was referring to his LCC pricing of SGD200. EK’s price is great for the product but you are not going to be saving ~SGD80 by opting for them over LCC competition.

The real reason behind Emirates operating to Penang via Singapore is that currently Penang's DIRECT international connections are limited by Malaysian rule to China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, South Korea, Thailand and Qatar. Of course that could change in future.

Haven't they backed away from that in recent times though? Fairly certain that Vietnam and several other countries have service there; as well as seasonals to destinations outside of that group that can be operated a scheduled charters for the rest of the year.

That, and IINM, all Malaysian airports are allowed nonstops to JED.
