Rumor: AA To Feature Enhanced Business Class For Upcoming 787-8s

Mon Jan 27, 2020 9:34 pm

Aside from the talks of American Airlines looking into new seats for 2023 and beyond, it looks like American Airlines will have an enhanced Business Class for their upcoming 22 787-8s with 12 due to be delivered this year.

Since ending their contract with Zodiac for their “Concept D” seats found on all current 787-8s and select 772s, AA needed a replacement. Logically, they would go with the Collins Aerospace Super Diamond seat found on all 787-9s and select 772s, but it looks like they’ll “enhance” it.

“We have chosen a seat for the 787-8s that we’ll receive in 2020,” a spokesperson told us. “It’s an enhanced version of the Collins Super Diamond seat model that we have on our current 787-9 and some 777-200s.”

Sounds like they’ll be doors to align themselves with British Airways’ new Club Suite seats?

Or who knows, it may be nothing like this.

They are apparently getting new Y seats as well.

There is nothing at all wrong with the seat that American currently has installed in the Business cabins of their 787-9s. After several long haul international trips in these seats, I have always felt that they are very well designed and extremely comfortable. Don’t change what isn’t broken.

My understanding is that AA doesn't have a middle divider on their Super Diamonds. Along with a door to the seat itself, this would be just a tad upgrade that would really make a difference.
Also, First Class on the 77W is ready for an upgrade...simply because AA is the only one offering F of the US3 doesn't mean the product doesn't matter.

I'd rather lick the floor of the galley than sit in a 787-8 zodiac J seat.

Onwards to 28' seat pitch?
I'm assuming it would be thinner to save weight and increase the space between seats. It will be enhanced

Somewhere someone posts about AA changing their BC seats to what British has in BC/club. Ugg!! I felt sorry for those people in the upper deck and Lower 747-400 refurbished. AA’s BC seats on 777-220 and300 were more like BA’s FC on the 747-400 . Must say the scons lighting was quiet nice.. very warm and inviting.

Will AA refit the Zodiac seats off the other aircraft? Some product consistency would help.

I wish the US3 would put proper curtains back on their aircraft- block out the galley light! Realistically curtains don’t make an aircraft any less safe once a person of threat is onboard....

This is great! And yes, hopefully they'll replace the backwards/forwards Zodiac seats on the remaining 772s and 787-8s.

I thought the 772s were all fixed to the forward facing seats?

About 19 of 47 772s have the same Zodiac seats found on the current 788s.

https://sites.google.com/site/newameric ... -777-200er

All 787-9s however have forward-facing seats.

Kind of surprising that they're still getting 22 more 787-8s. I recognize that they're replacing the 767-300s but still...that's a lot of the smaller model and ultimately they'll have nearly as many as the -9s.

Hyperbole, much?

What is so bad about the Zodiac seat, then? I cannot think of any international J class experience (including carriers like Iran Air) where I would find something as disgusting as licking the galley floor preferable to flying in.
I only turn left when boarding aircraft. Well, mostly. All right, sometimes. OH OKAY - rarely.

I personally agree, but it's an FAA regulation so the US carriers don't have any choice.

Are you confusing the BA CWS with the existing CW seat?

The Super Diamond found on all but 19 of the 772s and all 789s at AA is an excellent seat. There is no divider and no privacy door of course, but the seat is spacious, with ample and sensible storage to minimize losing personal items, and there is significant privacy. The metallic dark grey finish on the shell looks great (wish they had used the same finish on the 77W seats). It sounds like AA is making some aesthetic tweaks and some enhancements to the cabins and that will be a very good step forward.

What upcoming 787-8? American Airlines received all ordered 787-8. 20 ordered, 20 in the fleet now.
There are 25 undelivered 787-9 on order.

You may be missing this April '18 order: https://thepointsguy.com/news/aa-confir ... cels-a350/

American Airlines currently has 20 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners in its fleet. Today’s order of 22 new aircraft will more than double the size of its -8 fleet.

As much as I would love to AA have a First Class similar to JAL or Cathay on their 77W's, is it something they need. How many people actually pay for it, few probably ? AA might be better served with a great Business Class and expanded Y+ on their 77W planes. Keep it simple AA.

Ahh okay interesting didn’t know that. Thought it was something the FA unions has pushed for. Okay, stand corrected.

Boeing’s order and deliveries website isn’t working for me right now since I’m on mobile but iirc the 788s are booked under Boeing Capital (or whatever their financial arm is called) and are being leased to AA.

How about we stop projecting and actually judge the final product? Shhesh, such commiserating about something you HAVE NOT SEEN. Let AA deliver the product, and then we get to praise or crap accordingly.

I agree. I've had the chance to try the F seat on the 77W but decided against it, instead opting for the privacy of the J seat.

Agreed on First Class on the 77W and the A321T, the only other plane in the AA fleet to have it. The product is dated and the difference between Biz and First service wise in the cabin is minimal. If you're going to keep a First Class product, then upgrade it.

For me the worst aspect of the Zodiac seat was the transfer of movement from the seat behind or in front of you. Who wants to pay for J for the sensation of sharing a bed with a stranger?

Seriously? AA’s latest fleet plan from 5 days ago shows them having 12 new 787-8s by the end of 2020.

I recently flew in business with AA for the first time in many years. It was a 787. The seats are fine. The service is fine. I wouldn’t have any qualms doing it again. What I would ask that the FA’s don’t gather in the galley and have a social function while everyone else is trying to sleep. It’s like living in a flat above a party at 3am on Saturday night. If they’re not going to keep quiet, they should at least invite you in!

I wonder if the new airplanes (both versions) will have the onboard bar. I know that the 787-8 does (but has the bad seats) and that they 787-9 so far don't (but have the better seats). Do we know?

That would be because they are leasing the 22 787-8s from Boeing Capital.
