Compass Airlines

Hi all!! Yes, I tried a search and well, there hasn't been alot lately on Compass Airlines. So, they are losing Delta flying. That's the last I heard on them.

Anyone know what the future holds for it's workers? It seems like not too long ago, they opened the SEA base. Are all of the SEA based crews getting pink slips? With Skywest coming in, will the employees be given a chance to work for them?

Rumors. Any rumors on possible contracts? Is Compass going to be sold? What's their plans with all those 175's? And how secure is their flying for American?

I really hope they will be okay. I worry for the workers. I wonder how morale is there?

You don’t get pink slips when your base closes you get displaced to another base. If you don’t like it then you resign.

From what I have heard, morale is extremely poor. Management has been promising news on “future opportunities” for a while. In the mean time, the Delta flying is going away, and OO just announced 20 E175s for AA, none of which looks especially promising for Compass when the current AA contract ends.

Most likely, I would think the SEA and PHX bases dwindle and eventually shutter, leaving LAX as the final base. It wouldn’t surprise me if it got to the point of furlough, that these employees would be offered jobs at other TransStates Carriers, or would fairly easily find a job at a competitor.

As far as future rumors? I’ve heard a lot, but, one Ive heard is some sort of United/Mana Air buyout resulting in the pilots helping to staff the XJT operation. Not sure I see a financial incentive for either side on this one, but it’s out there. Of course plenty of other rumors involving just about every mainline carrier in the states (plus Moxy/Breeze) but with Mesa receiving the latest UA contract, OO for AA, I’m not sure scope wise there is much more room for regional growth, barring 50 seat/CRJ-550 conversions and additions.

In my opinion, Compass may be the beginning of further consolidation in the Regional Industry.

I believe there is also plausibility in AA moving their 175s to Envoy, flying from DFW and ORD.

If there were to be furloughs, it would be in seniority order, not by base. That would result in junior crew in other bases to be impacted, and more senior SEA crews displaced. Compass crews will be welcome to apply for positions at Skywest, but they'd come in as new hires. The AA contract ends in 2021 IIRC. Its not secure at all.

As for a sale, what value does Compass bring to a purchaser? They don't bring a new type to any of the major regional players. They don't bring any work at all after the AA contract ends. I feel bad for the front line employees at Compass, because I don't see much beyond an orderly wind down.

The only thing Compass brings is a pilot group. At some point this summer, the regionals are going to get ugly in terms of staffing. There might come a time that buying a pilot group would be beneficial to another regional

The only thing Compass brings is a pilot group. At some point this summer, the regionals are going to get ugly in terms of staffing. There might come a time that buying a pilot group would be beneficial to another regional

What we have seen in the past is generally buying a pilot group is not a good move because the cost of merging seniority business, licensing, etc, etc, is higher than the cost of Skywest or envoy just offering a big bonus to people with prior 121 experience especially because people at compass are applying like crazy to majors and the U/LCC's I would personally be shocked if compass can staff its flying with the way attrition is going by the beginning of 2021 if there is no new contracts.

All I know is this... I have faced situations like this in the past, and the stress these Frontline employees face is unreal. I really hope something comes along and helps them maintain employment.

Would Horizon or Alaska have any potential interest in Compass?

Would Moxy/Breeze be a potential purchaser? They might have more than a pilot group to gain.

For what? Their certificate so AAG can launch another airline? Not going to happen.

Compass doesn't own any of its metal. Only thing of value in fact on the west coast is the large hangar they built at SJC for E75 maintenance.

AFAIK, they don't even own it.--they're just leasing it from Signature. It most definitely was not built for CZ either. It originally was meant for Google, but that was before the bought NUQ.

I heard that the PHX base has closed and everyone is now out of LAX. I don't know about SEA, but I'm willing to bet it is similar.

Wow that's different than what a handful of Compass people have told me. It's a large hangar, large enough for 757/67 aircraft. Makes sense if you think about it. Thanks.

Compass had a hanger they built specifically for themselves in SDF. That was sold to republic a few years ago when the entire operation was moved west.

All but 6 of their DL 175s are in the process of being transferred to YX. The other 6 are going to OO. YX will be using them primarily in the new DL BOS hub, while OO will replace CP out west.

That leaves CP with 25 175s, all operated for AA. That contract ends in 2022. If AA decides to place them with another carrier, that would be the end of CP. Strong rumors that MQ will receive those 25, while OO will replace CP in LAX for AA flying. Remeber, OO just was awarded flying for 25 AA 175s. Probably not a coincidence.

PHX is confirmed closing, which only leaves SEA and LAX as crew bases. Expect SEA to close as well.

That would leave a lot of CP pilots without jobs. UNLESS, Breeze comes in and swoops up all those already-type rated pilots for their 195 operation. Very plausible. If not, then I would assume the pilot group gets absorbed into the two other TSH airlines.

I thought Compass was an Australian budget airline that lauched service with two brand new leased A300 from Monarch Airlines in 1990!

Pilots will be fine. They can aspire to better than Breeze. DL and UA are hiring heavily; there's a ton of mandatory mainline retirements in the next few years. Other employees may struggle.
