PHX Terminal 2 closes

Wed Feb 05, 2020 5:23 am

With the newly renovated Terminal 3 taking in the remaining airlines from the 1962-era Terminal 2, Phoenix Sky Harbor closed Terminal 2 tonight after 58 years of service. (Know there's a Phoenix thread but thought this merited its own post, merge if you see fit.)

Flew out of there a couple times over the past few years including in January, was always exceptionally convenient in spite of the fact it was dated. I've got some photos somewhere since I knew the terminal was on its last legs, will find them if anyone's interested.

I'll miss Terminal 2. Terminal 4 (outside of the S2 Concourse) is one of the most generic and architecturally unappealing airport facilities in the country. Functional, yes but it is completely devoid of any charm or character. Terminal 3 is better but it looks very generic. Terminal 2 was full of character at every turn.

Car to plane in 10 minutes, max. Any time of day, any time of year, it was consistent. Well, once TSA kept PreCheck staffed consistently, it was an easy terminal to handle. Great for those of us who are PHX based and if you parked in that lovely garage, you could easily be on the freeway heading home 15 minutes after stepping off the plane.

Sad to see it go.

Exactly. I flew from T2 at least monthly or more frequently during the decade I lived in the valley, and that terminal will always have a special place for me. I had my routine down to a science, and as long as it wasn't during the busy 7am rush, I could make it from my car to the gate faster than it took just to get out of the dang T4 parking garage.

Yes, the check-in/baggage area was very run down, and the UA gate areas were a madhouse several times a day, but they were easy sacrifices for convenience. The main part of the terminal always felt very special because it was from a bygone era of flying.

I still remember seeing signage for TWA even up until about 10 years ago, and the "secret" cut-through past the airline offices downstairs still had the CO meatball logo more recently than that. And then there were the C/D gates — I'll always miss the feeling of standing outside in the walkway to C/D at sunrise on a crisp early morning with a gentle desert breeze and the smell of jet fuel in the air. I'll miss the sight of the Great Lakes B1900s, the early morning 757 with a tulip on the tail waiting to push back, and the frenzy of Continental departures.

The new E/F concourse is stunning, and it's the terminal PHX deserves. But it'll never replace T2 for me. I'll enjoy the new amenities when I come back to visit, but I'll always be nostalgic for the old Terminal 2.

Am I the only one that hated the pepperoni Hot Pocket smell that permeated the terminal?

I will miss it, so many memories of going to the airport as a kid in the 70's when we would pick up my father after his business trips. Watching the Hughes AirWest planes at the old circular end of the terminal. TWA in all its glory, the old AA 747 cutaway model, the international gates with Aero California and Western flights. The pinball arcade! It was great late 50's style architecture, very business like. My last flight was a few years back on UA. I'm gonna miss it.

If you look at the Google aerial shot, the semi-circular concrete area to the west of Terminal 2 was the apron for Terminal 1. The terminal building was between the Buckeye Road extension and the apron (i.e. Buckeye Road ran past the terminal).

https://www.google.com/maps/@33.4349511,-112.0149641,449m/data=!3m1!1e3

If you want to mess with this site:

https://gis.maricopa.gov/GIO/HistoricalAerial/index.html

And look at a photo or 1982 or before, you can see Terminal 1 in service.

Sad to see it go. Used T2 almost weekly flying TW PHXSTL on the L1011. Flew United Express to SJC and SFO many times. Even used T1 a couple of times on WN before it went down. I always thought T2 represented what everyone thought an airline terminal should feel and look like in the wild west. It was so much different than any other place I flew too. Lots of memories and exceedingly convenient.

Used T1 many times during my college days.

Used T2 several times over recent years - both for UA and AS flights. It was rundown, but also very convenient.

Haven't been to T3 in years, but have used T4 not long ago.

Wasn't there an asbestos issue with the bag room at T2? Was this resolved?

Such an easy terminal to navigate and the United Club was great for getting work done. I remember the open-air baggage claim walk back in the day. Overall the nostalgia feel was wonderful.

In the original T2 basement area there is definitely asbestos but all the outbound bags go over to the "barn" to the west if the terminal which is new enough that there should be no asbestos.

Yep, the TWA gates were right when you came up the escalator. Then AS took them over when TW closed. Felt like a bus station but takes you back to the 'old' days of flying!

I remember as a kid going to the roof to see family members walk across the tarmac from the terminal to the plane, turning to avoid the jet blast when the plane taxied away and the TWA L1011s and AA 747 and DC10s arriving. Good times.

The TW gates were taken over by CO. AS was at gates 2 and 4 (where NK was, most recently) and then moved to 10/12 at the very end of the concourse.

Did LAA use T2 or was that T3?

Regarding T1 though -- if I remember correctly, didn't you ave to go outside to get from gate area to gate area and to concessions?

The first time I flew into PHX in 1972 I was struck by the way T1 reflected the DC 3 era of travel and T 2 the early jet age. Almost like a museum of terminal design.

Does anyone else remember when the old USAir (years prior to merging with America West) had a very busy focus city operation in terminal 2 with several gates in a newly built second level toward the end of the concourse? This is the large open area where Alaska had a few gates more recently. It was in the late 80s and USAir had mainline non-stop flights from PHX to a host of cities including BWI, BUR, CLT, CLE, DAY, IND, LGB, ONT, SNA, PHL, PIT, SAN, SFO. I was always fascinated by what the logic might have been behind this mini-hub operation by USAir since it was attempted at the same time America West and Southwest were both growing rapidly at PHX. This operation didn't last long, and US reduced back to hub flying only after a few years. .

LAA used T2 from the time it opened until T3 opened, then they moved to the south finger of T3.

I live in PHX and have used T2 pretty regularly since early 2016 while flying AS and UA, plus four token NK arrivals. I've also used it many times in the past since my first PHX connection on a very young America West in December 1983. Most recently was a round trip to SEA on AS in mid-January 2020. I flew in from LAX on AA this past Sunday night and purposely walked through the land-side (bag claim/ticketing area) "one last time" while on foot from T3 AirTrain station to West Economy Parking. I did some short videos with my phone for posterity. Gonna miss T2, that's for sure.

I flew out of Terminal 2 five times from 2005-2010 with less fond memories. I was always coming to/from the East Valley and it was just harder to get to, especially by transit. This was pre-Uber and I didn't really want to bug my friends for rides nor pay for airport parking. Westbound buses didn't stop there in the pre-light rail days and I'd have to walk a long distance with luggage from T3. Once the light rail opened, it was the same thing because the pre-Skytrain buses did the same pattern. I also had rather bad luck with very slow security lines there; pre-check wasn't in full swing yet and they were still dealing with lots of renovations. At least once through security it was an easy terminal to navigate. My favorite back then was T3 because it felt a lot less hectic than T4 but still had a modern layout and was easier to access than T2. Of course, all of the airlines flying PHX-MSP were out of T3 or T4 so T2 was, fortunately, not a frequent terminal for me. Just some sporadic UA and CO connecting flights (namely PHX-DEN-MSP, PHX-ORD-MSP, PHX-CLE-MSP, and PHX-IAH-MSP)

I'd be curious what happens to the two beautiful murals above the central holding area. Someone told me they were designated historical items but I've never heard or read that anywhere.

T2 was a breeze but it was a hell hole otherwise.

If you google earth or map it you can see the curve of the old tarmac. The road 300 ft. west of T2 was the terminal roadway. The terminal was curved like DFW terminals but only took the space between the roadway and the tarmac area. A whole If I remember correctly 5 gates were all Southwest in the end. You would walk up to the ticket counter for your gate. Buy a ticket & walk between the ticket counters up the jetwat and onto the plane (Circa 1985, pre TSA.) The baggage claim was open air & rain/sun shade cover where the grey rootop space next to T2 is now.
You could get off the plane walk 100 to 600 ft. to baggage claim & then 140 ft west across the drive to your car. Fastest park/check in/board & arrive/claim bag/leave lot of any airport I ever went to. Only thing close is Burbank & Lihue Hawaii.

As for T1, one remnant is its former parking lot, which is now the West Economy Park & Walk (soon to be renamed simply Park & Walk, with T2's garage being renamed West Economy).

Flew out of t3 last night and now with everything consolidated there, the drop off and baggage claim were a zoo. Security has been increased to 10 lanes and while I didn’t go over to north, very post security was the same. However downstairs was so busy and that was at 2200

It’s getting to be that time of year. Soon the rental car line will be 30 minutes long just to get on a bus!

Many fond memories of T2 growing up as a TWA nonrev in the 60's and 70's. Also got to know T1 somewhat in the 80's after TWA dropped the ABQ-PHX route and WN took it over. Sure wish T1 could have been saved as a museum for Sky Harbor.

I agree. T2 had a very unique appeal and felt very much like Arizona. I also have great memories of flying TWA out of there, including several L-1011 rides. Those were the good old days for sure.

Sad to see it close.
