Airbus suspends A320 production in Tianjin

Wed Feb 05, 2020 10:28 am

Due to the Coronavirus situation, Airbus' narrow-body output will temporary shrink by six aircraft a month as company decides to close the only China plant.

Statement: https://www.airbus.com/newsroom/press-r ... t-all_ml_0

Wonder how long this will last?

The metal can wait - it won't go anywhere in the meantime.

I guess it'll last as long as the Chinese govt think it necessary.

How many recent cancellations they might have received in the background? This virus affects travel and the airline industry big time. Can China continue to grow as it did before?

This linked to the Coronavirus. So nothing strategic going on.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

I didn't really understand it since Tianjin is like 1200 km away from the center of the outbreak in Wuhan.

Airbus's presser says:

With regards to the business impact, China domestic and worldwide travel restrictions are posing some logistical challenges. The Tianjin Final Assembly Line facility is currently closed.

So the real issue is getting people and parts into and out of the factory.

Hopefully, but I'm not sure we can make conclusions yet.

A320 family delivery rate is one area where Airbus is having some challenges so this is rather unwelcome news.

I wonder if widespread virus outbreak is covered in aviation contracts?

I guess due to Chinese domestic travel restrictions in place some workers cant go back to the factory from their Chinese New Year holidays as well as delays at ports and airports even for cargo ops.

Aren't most of the deliveries from TSN for Chinese airlines? If they have delays in delivery, given present issues with massive cuts in flights for who knows how long, I doubt they will be too concerned as long as they don't have to keep up with progress payments!

Also for some Asian Airlines apart from Chinese airlines. Not really sure about the delays etc.
If it's not Boeing, I'm not going!

Tianjin has started to restrict its population's movements to quarantine against the Coronavirus. VW's plant in Tianjin is also suspended.

Airbus made a logical decision to suspend the assembly line.

The Chinese plant is mainly to deliver to Chinese and Asian carriers. Given the current situation, I don't think any of them is in any urgent need to any additional capacity. It's to everyone's interest to suspend production until the virus situation clears.

It's everywhere.

Even major banks such as HSBC and Citibank and the big-4 accounting firms have ordered all their offices in Hong Kong closed until at least Feb 16. Casinos are closed in Macau (can you imagine Las Vegas shutting down completely? That's what it is for Macau). The three largest department stores in Korea closed all their stores across the whole of Korea (think Macy's, JC Penny and Walmart close all their stores in US?)

This is the current situation:
- The whole province of Hubei and the city of Wenzhou, with over 60 million of population in total, are in lock-down, meaning no traffic in and out, and no traffic within
- Cases are reported in ALL provinces in China, where currently accounts for 99% of all cases globally
- Most major cities in China have imposed heavy restrictions in movement of people. For cities including Hangzhou, Nanjing, Tianjin, Shenzhen and Guangzhou, etc., each residential community is in a semi-lock-down situation where each family is only allowed to send one person out of their apartments every 2 days. No visitors are allowed except for food delivery. Traffic in and out of the cities are searched and "discouraged". Long distance bus and trains severely curtailed
- Severe shortages of medical equipment, as simple as medical masks and protective clothings, are reported in hospitals, especially in smaller cities, resulting in potential patients not being tested, or sent home, and cross-contamination within hospitals
- Many rural authorities have resorted to blocking roads into their towns with rocks and mud to cut themselves off from outside world, thereby hoping people carrying the virus would not be able to get into their towns and villages

The whole country is running in a massive panic and confusion. The high speed rail network they are so proud of essentially has become the high speed conduit to spread the virus at a speed of, well, 300km/h across the whole country.

Wuhan: 11m inhabitants. i.e. every second person left.

Are those numbers realistic in any way?
Leaving is via public transport. It is not like in the US
were everybody would start his car and "plug" the roads :-)

Avoid having another 100m spread the virus?

someone tagged the London Tube System as "Teleportation between civilized islands".

I think we can apply the same likeness to air transport.
