Qatar Airways News and Discussion Thread

Wed Feb 05, 2020 3:25 pm

Welcome to the Qatar airways news and discussion thread I decided to open this as I saw many other interesting threads about other airlines and I thought Qatar Airways would be perfect for its phenomenal ability to always be in the news.

I would be this thread discussing Qatar is currently negotiating a 49% stake in RwandAir. They currently have a 60% stake at Kigali airport, so I can definitely see this as plausible acquisition. This would be another interesting purchase, increasing there reach into Africa.

I will continue to update this thread as more information comes through.

For its ability to always be in the news, this sure has been a slow response to your original post. Waiting to see some news!

Intriguing response to Delta, that's for sure.

Very true thought there would be more activity on this, both good and bad. :blockhead:

Huge news right there, I knew the news would pick up. Interesting to see how this progresses.

Interesting move re: RwandAir. QR has been a good member of oneworld as it relates to investing in other members and bringing people into the alliance (AT). Hopefully this is the beginning of them enhancing Rwandair for eventual oneWorld entry!

Any idea how QR is doing on the recently launched Gaborone(GBE), Botswana service? I have the idea it can't be great, the JNB-GBE sector almost feels like the same type of operation as SYD-CBR.
Now that there are mention of EK launching DXB-MPM-GBE, I just can't see that it could work for both.

Yes it's weird, especially as the entire population of Botswana is under 2.5 million. As just about all Europe bound traffic connects via JNB which is quite close, maybe QR and EK think same plane service even with a stop is preferable to changing aircraft. I also doubt there's much business between GBE & MPM so even if EK secure traffic rights, how many pax do they expect?

Not really. Namibia (where I live) has about the same population and QR have been profitably flying to WDH for a few years. From July they are going daily. And Namibia at least has a daily Air Namibia flight to FRA. Does Gaborone have a direct flight to Europe? I honestly don't know.

Many "small" (Namibia is twice the size of California!) and "poor" countries nevertheless have a fairly wealthy top stratum of the population who can certainly afford international travel.

I believe Botswana is the richest country per capita in Africa, but there are no Europe flights- it's all via JNB. Isn't there a possibility of Air Namibia shutting down?

It’s a weird market and a weird approach by both carriers to the market.

Gaborone itself isn’t hugely in demand for inbound tourists but Botswana is - and it attracts lucrative tourists at that. A stopover I’m JNB (or MPM) would make a one-stop option, and therefore less appealing though, since you’d still have to get from Gabs to Maun and you can do that already from Joberg. Do they have 5th freedom rights? If not it makes no sense, if so then with SAA cutting routes and strong demand between those cities then that makes a lot of sense. A direct flight from Doha would make more sense to me as you could attract wealthy tourists from Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and North America.

For tourists to Botswana, you’d be relying on the higher quality premium product to attract people to justify the one stop. For business traffic, I’m not too sure on the market but Botswana is a growing bastion of stability in Africa.

LAS and SFO, while announced, were never actually planned. The only planned US expansion was DTW in 2021.

Actually now that you say that I remember reading it somewhere aswell. Glad to see it growing then. Sucks that we won't see Emirates or Etihad at Yul though.

I’d love for that to happen especially with BA 350K coming to PHL soon as well. The simple fact QR will use a 773 again this summer shows the capacity is there like you mentioned

Botswana is relatively wealthy for Africa. And a popular tourist destination. Not odd at all.

Definitely. How this industry forgive$ and forget$. Jokes aside, a Delta-Qatar alliance makes enormous sense, especially with LATAM that can join in, perhaps forming a U.S.- South American - Middle East JV in the future.

What QR should do is do a codeshare agreement with AC or WS instead of Interline, maybe then QR can expand more into Canada like TK due to their *A codeshare with AC

Does anyone know what config the A321neo will have?
I read somewhere C16/Y150, but is this correct?
And also what config will the 787-9 have, and why are seven of them ready for delivery but stored?

Aer Lingus has already taken one A332 from them ('ACH, now EI-GEY) and will take another A330 (a -300), 'AEH, in April, which will become EI-EIK. It would not surprise me if EI took a few more down the road, especially to cover late deliveries of A321NeoLRs. They are well maintained, have GE engines and the config is not wildly different from EI's.

QR investments generally* are in airlines that are established, well run and profitable, it is a lower risk game but you have to pay a premium for that. This investment strategy is quite the opposite to Etihad. This doesn’t mean they exclusively follow this policy with investments in Air Italy and an attempt on AA.

Qatar Airways cabin crew to wear hazmat suits

Tue May 19, 2020 3:50 pm

Well, this should do wonders for passenger confidence....

“ Qatar Airways is one of several airlines to introduce Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) suits for its cabin crew in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
From now onwards, all flight attendants for Qatar's flag carrier will wear a hazmat suit over their uniforms, along with safety goggles, gloves and a mask during flights.”

This is great news. I am not a crew member nor am I working in the aviation industry, but I do believe that these people need protection and therefore I am glad they'll be wearing PPE gear.

It is a bit excessive, but likely mostly to create comfort among crew and passengers. A mask/face covering and gloves would likely be just as effective.

Unless they are to receive training on how to properly doff the PPE to eliminate contamination this is simply a placebo effect and has the potential to increase exposure.
