What to expect in Singapore Airshow?

Fri Feb 07, 2020 3:34 pm

Only a few days left to the Singapore Airshow 2020. What do you expect from the exhibition?
- Display airframes:
+ Airbus: no commercial aircraft this year, only military aircraft such as A400M (Malaysian AF) and A330MRT (Singapore AF).
+ Boeing: only the ecoDemonstrator airframe (777-200). No information about Boeing will bring a 787, 737Max (impossible) or a 777-9X (not ready for long haul flight to SIN yet?)
- BIG ORDERS: the thing that you can't miss in every airshow. I'm waiting for Vietnam Airlines with its 50 narrowbodies order. To be more specific, the last few weeks the Vietnamese gov approved VN's plan to buy up to 50 narrowbodies (MAX or neo). Let see that will VN choose the A320/321neo (well obviously VN is operating 20x A321neos) or the MAX (under consideration). Besides that, VN may order up to 8 A350-1000 or B777-8 for their US plan, as well as the order of a dozen of regional jets (it looks like the E190 E2 is the only choice as VN only wants jets which have the capacity of ~100 pas).

With the coronavirus going on, I would not expect much.

LOTS of face masks..
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
The heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
The heart has its seasons, its evenings and songs of its own

It could be a repeat of 2018 without any order announcements from A&B.

What to expect? An excellent market for face masks.

It is time for Air Niugnii to decide, if they will order the E195E2 or the A220. Possibly we will hear something from the airlines from Cambodia.

I'd be pretty surprised if the show even occurs, with the health issues at stake.

China, as a whole, is essentially an island right now, travel-wise.

Singapore has more cases than many countries. But they are not in China...

I too am surprised the show is even on.
737-300/400/500 ... are NOT classics :)

When did Singapore become a part of China :banghead:

Either way, there are exhibitors pulling out, although the show goes on. There are 3 new confirmed cases yesterday in Singapore for people that have never been to mainland China, though, and the coronavirus will definitely overshadow the airshow.

Isn’t Alan Milne, the former head of QF engineering, the CEO these days?

Is this the size of plane they want to replace the Fokkers?

Dang, beat me to it.

I think 100% of the Chinese vendors and participants are not coming. I would expect a low key event with maybe some light pushing and shoving at one of the cocktail parties in the evening.

Chinese Air Force will still be there, though.

P.S. Maybe a vendor there will sale things that can turn an aircraft factory into one that makes face mask? :duck:

Yes, it is the size, they want to have, after they have abandoned the B737 MAX order (still trying to get out of the contract) and as replacements for their Fokker 70 and 100.
https://postcourier.com.pg/air-niugini-abandons-boeing-737-max-orders/

Last year in ?Jul?, Embraer was there (no link). during last A220 Pacific tour, the A220 had a stop in Port Moresby. There are two different forms of stops during the A220 Souteast-Asia and on the Pacific tour; first "for all" (so all airlines + lessors) and on direct request/demand of a single airline. Stops for singe airlines/customer are easy to identify, if there are any pictures of the cabin. On the neck rest is stated: A220 and the name of the airline. On the stopy for "all", only A220.

Asia Tour:
Malaysia on demand of Air Malaysia group
Pacific tour:
Vanatu: Air Vanatu
Sydney: Qantas
Port Moresby: Air Niugini
Links now only for the Port Moresby stop.
https://postcourier.com.pg/airbus-a220-visits-port-moresby/
https://www.thenational.com.pg/airbus-visits-port-moresby-during-tour/
And as example, see the neck-rest at 42 seconds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaUYVxbUiaI

Additional Air Niugini wants to get the PW1500/1900G maintenance base for the whole pacific area (I have not saved the link, was a local source, I do not have any more). So there will be two contracts.

Last news, it seems, to get out of the MAX contract, they will swap the MAX to E196E2. But for this, the Boeing/Embraer contract will have to be finalized.

De Havilland have been flying a Dash 8 there over the last few days. They must be hopeful of a decent number of sales.

No, seems not any more.
De Havilland employees/officials will not come any more, as most others, all regarding Coronavirus, the Dash 8 will be only seen on the static display, if it will not changed.
The big meetings in front of the show (with 300 airline CEO and officials is cancelled.
COMAC and all Chinese companies have completely cancelled
Bombardier Aviation, De Havilland Aircraft of Canada, Piaggio Aerospace, Gulfstream Aerospace, Viking Air and Textron Aviation: No employees and officials will come, just to protect the employees to get ill and to spread the virus.
On Static display till now: Airbus, Boeing, Dassault Aviation, De Havilland Aircraft of Canada, Lockheed Martin. Airbus and Boeing will not come with passenger jets, only military planes will be displayed. Many companies for the business jet market are not there.
Also the flight program will be reduced, Black Eagles form South Korea will not come.

Seems I have to correct, a small market for face masks, as no one important will be there. Let us see, if anyone will be there.

And sorry for the double-post prior. I have produced a double-post by editing of a post, and than there was an error message. Board software seems to have an interesting bug.

The Boeing ecoDemonstrator (B777-2J6) that was supposed to be on static display also ended up not coming. It made it to Osaka-Kansai and is now returning to BFI.

Of all the countries outside China that had reported cases, Singapore seems to be the place to be if you want to catch the infection! It would be prudent for foreigners to avoid visiting Singapore at this time. Even the local residents seem to be panicking after the orange alert was issued. Although I have tickets to the show, I will be giving the SAS a miss this year.

No one of the players for the civil market (perhaps with exception of Embraer) is there, the business market seems also to be dead (as all mayor players, perhaps with exception of Embraer), the mayor players on the military part are also not there (Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Boeing, Airbus and may others)...
The airlines CEO meeting with more than 300 officials in front of the airshow is cancelled, so the airlines will also not send anyone....

I do not expect anything of this airshow, they shall have better cancelled it in last weeks.

I carefully monitored and decided to cancel mid last week. The growing risk of being quarantained for 2 weeks after the show, the risk of infecting family / colleagues etc. played a role.

Many suppliers, customers and side events where cancelled anyway, reducing the show's value. The US based participants cancelled first, because of company liability and claims risks.

The next morning code orange was announced by SIN authorities, advising against mass meeting but saying the show will go on.. so far not sorry to have cancelled.

SIN is not a democracy, press is alligned and trade is immensly important for the country.
