Storm Ciara over Europe - Impact on Aviation

Sun Feb 09, 2020 6:25 am

Lots of go-arounds and likely diversions today, due to high winds.

LGW already seeing the most. LHR likely to follow.

But due to quirky UK law, not strictly legal.

The storm won’t stop at the UK borders (despite Brexit) :D Western and Northern France are under orange alert so places like CDG and ORY could be affected too. 100km/h winds forecast for this afternoon.

TUI TOM985P 757-200 from Manchester to Luton (I presume a positioning flight) had one go at landing at Luton before heading all the way back to Manchester.

I guess a 757 joyride would be pretty fun in this weather.

Reason it would go to stn is its runway is more into wind 22 Vs 26. Makes a lot of difference.

Please find attached (unfortunately the image-links do not work) the current situation (weather station measurements in kph) and the outlook for 12z and the high-resolution forecast for LHR. In the night it will get better, but then continental Europe will be hit hard (France, Benelux, Germany and Norther Switzerland).

I think Germany and Switzerland will be most affected, as the storm reaches its maximum in the peak traffic hours (CDG will be hit in the night).

Fur MUC, wind gusts of more than 60kt are expected in the morning, FRA and ZRH will have as well 50-55kt.

EK25, DXB-GLA made two missed approaches last night as the storm whipped up over Scotland. They diverted to MAN for fuel before returning later in a short weather window.

I assume most diversions from LTN to STN are because of the longer runway, and better runway orientation in this wind.

EZY184 from BFS to LTN had an interesting morning. It sat in the hold for LTN for some time, then looked like it was going to divert to LGW. It got almost all the way down there, then turned around and came back to STN. Landing was 2.5 hours late.

I'm 15 minutes away from STN and about 1hr15m away from LHR (traffic permitting), so I am curious as to how that distance (25 miles?) differs in terms of wind speed right now.

As you say, the wind here is horrendous. Not my choice for a diversion airport lol.

Yes, but has no free stands at the moment. Most UK airports are full

Wizz Air A321 POZ-LTN diverted to NCL
FlyBe E175 CDG-MAN went to NCL
Titan 757 CMF-MAN also went to NCL

EZY EDI-STN returned to EDI as has BE EDI-BHX

BA IAH-LHR seems to be going to FRA

BA196 Houston to London Heathrow is flying on to Frankfurt after two missed approaches. Seems all of the airports in UK and Ireland are having trouble.

QR3 has just gone around at LHR, looks to have been the second missed approach.

Runway alignment makes all the difference. Couldn’t get into either Mildenhall or Lakenheath one morning, Waddington had the same wind right down the runway

Later this afternoon/evening gusts up to 60 knots are expected.
