FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Interesting to see Spirit cut RDU-BOS before the AA service starts. Something had to give there and this is first and foremost a business market, not a leisure one so it stands to reason NK wouldn't last on this route.

Not only is it hourly, it's purely mainline. Here's an example of the aircraft for July 15, 2020:

2x 757-200
2x A321
1x A319
4x 737-800
3x 737 MAX 8 (subject to change of course)

Thanks for posting. Can someone confirm if my understanding is correct. The below means that ATL to DCA is cut by 1 flight on May 4.

I think F9 would have stayed, but NK has diverged on strategy from F9.

Talk about something having to give. AA will walk that back IMHO.

No, ATL-DCA went from 4 daily flights in May to 3.

LF (Contour) starting IND-BNA/PIT/STL in June. Glad to see them venture out and do some non EAS markets and fill in some point to point gaps where there's no service. (future ExpressJet?) Good luck to them!

The first of what I assume will be several additions or upgrades as Milwaukee hosts the Democratic National Convention in mid July. Eight round trips on E75.

This was cut September 1st 2019. SA will now serve JFK nonstop from JNB with the A350 and IAD will now be served daily via ACC.

Wow, NK FLL-GUA going up to 11 weekly and MCO-GUA going to daily. That is great news. NK will have up to 4 flights a day to GUA compared to only 5 weekly flights a little more than a year ago.

Yea this interesting considering how many new birds they have coming online. Midsize cities growth like in BNA and AUS is needed to keep up with the new birds. Guess these routes they have other ULCC to fight with DEN F9 and MSP SY.

I didn't think this route would sustain 5 carriers when AA announced. I expected F9 to bail before NK but maybe this is a sign NK is smarter!

Wow, I hate seeing DFW-DEN dropped by Spirit. I haved traveled that route frequently out of DFW for the last 10 years or so. Nine times out of ten NK was the cheapest option out of the airlines that fly it (I don't give a rat's behind about brand loyalty I shop to find the cheapest deal).

The close-in adds on IAD-LAS/MIA are interesting...spare capacity from the China cuts trickling down?

The extra IAD-LAS flight is only 30minutes from another IAD-LAS flight. Plus it’s a 752 which is unusual for that route.

You're probably right, with the extra capacity moved to Spring Break destinations...LAS/MIA/RSW/MCO

Looks like some of the Widebody aircraft are seeing spoke service.

ORD-MCO sees a second 777 in International configuration (already had a domestic configuration 777), ORD-LAS and EWR-LAS seeing international configured 777s.

Nothing to do with UA ending SFO. They're dropping PAE-PDX from 3x to 2x to support launching BOI.

AS PAE BOI is a great "Business Route". This will be successful.
Why endure the nightmare and congestion of LAX when BUR, LGB, ONT & SNA is so much easier to fly in and out of. Same with OAK & SJC when it comes to SFO.

F9 will still be operating BOS-RDU, DEN-DFW, and DEN-MSY nonstop service once NK discontinues BOS-RDU, DEN-DFW, and DEN-MSY nonstop service.

DFW/DAL and MSY will also still have nonstop service out of DEN on WN and UA once NK discontinues DEN-DFW and DEN-MSY nonstop service, and AA will also still serve DFW nonstop from DEN in addition to UA, F9, and WN after NK discontinues DEN-DFW nonstop service.

DL and B6 will also still be serving RDU nonstop from BOS once NK discontinues BOS-RDU nonstop service.

While MSP will no longer have nonstop LCC service from Houston after NK drops IAH-MSP nonstop service, WN adding HOU-MSP nonstop service is a possibility with HOU being one of the largest WN focus cities that WN doesn't currently serve nonstop from MSP. SY re-entering the Houston market is also a possibility with SY having already re-entered a few markets that it previously pulled out of.

NK up to 11 flights a day at ACY, how long has it been since it’s been that high? Any chance they give MSY another run? Or even stretch to SJU/BNA/LAS?

DL ABQ-SLC OCT 3>4[3] NOV 3>4[3]
DL IDA-SLC OCT 4>5[4] NOV 4>5[4]
DL PSC-SLC OCT 3>4[3] NOV 3>4[3]
DL SLC-TUS OCT 3>4[3] NOV 3>4[3]

Watch this space, as they say. Phase 1 of SLC's terminal reconstruction is set to open in September, and there is plenty of speculation about new routes and service enhancements from DL and others. These changes may just be restoring frequencies that were lost to gate limits during construction, but still represent some of first changes we've seen for after the planned opening. I'm really curious to see what else happens, or if it will just be business as usual.

No, ATL-DCA went from 4 daily flights in May to 3.

Thank you. Got it!

Things have been silent from DL lately, redzeppelin gives me hope that this may be a temporary lull in new routes.

It is my understanding that PAE-PDX is dropping to 2X daily.

Has this been confirmed? 3X are still for sale (for only $44 each way).

Who knows. UA could have sold one or more of their slots to AS.

Several sources have said that PDX is being reduced, so that is probably right, but usually AS will unually zero out all but the full fare buckets on flights they are planning to cancel, and as of right now they are still selling X class on all three flights.

If they had acquired one of the UA slots I would have expected an announcement. Maybe they are hoping to get their hands on one? Or are they cutting something else, or just baiting and switching?

It's generally timed for business as long as you're BOI-originating headed northwest -- early BOI-PAE, early evening PAE-BOI. The only game in town so hopefully you have pretty much a full day of business up there.

Has AA ever run 777s between MIA and MCO?

No. Domestic 777s are usually cycled between hubs. Although this year they are using it on MIA-BOS to be able to run the BOS-LHR flight.

Anybody know where these birds are coming from? 4 77Es are being converted to domestic, I just want to be sure these flights are not any of the 77E domestics.

It looks like a significant expansion for NK at FLL, with some longstanding routes being cut to fund it. I wonder if there is some reason for the sudden growth - perhaps a play for more real estate or defending against other carriers?

I'm surprised to see MSY-DEN go, as it seemed to perform well last summer. I wonder if we'll see it return in the fall or if perhaps the flight is simply being retimed and could reappear.

Pretty aggressive expansion by NK at FLL. I think it's timed this way to catch B6 facing A321 delivery issues and focus elsewhere + WN facing MAX issues and focusing elsewhere. Probably good moves. As for some of their cuts, it was a ridiculous move for them to enter BOS-RDU or DEN-DFW. Those clearly can't work.

AA BOS-DCA MAY 13>10[14]
B6 BOS-DCA SEP 4>16[13] OCT 0>12[13]
Shortcomings of B6 data aside, could B6 do some damage to AA in this shuttle market with its greater frequencies, including 6am departure that gets you to either city in time for 9am meeting? Is there really much wiggle room in this market between airlines? I would guess that these are premium heavy with a large percentage of pax being FF members, people who won't switch airlines unless there is a very compelling argument. Perhaps the 9am meeting is that argument?

I assume the continued false start by AA on the BOS shuttle expansion is need for A319 to fill the MAX holes.

This I believe is just finishing the process they began end of last year to route these same plane stopovers to JNB through ACC rather than Dakar. Apparently more Ghanaians in DC than Senegalese. This is still 3x weekly.

Why bother? Just end the route already. Are there international destinations that folks at DCA can't access from CLT? A quick look suggests the main destinations are LHR, CDG, and MXP. If folks want to go to any of those places, they can make the trek to IAD and hop BA 744/789 to LHR and connect everywhere. This route is pointless.

I believe this is only for the Democratic National Convention which is in July in MKE. There are two flights to MKE on the 12th, 17th, 18th (855A and 505P) and 2 return flights to DCA on same days at 1110A and 655P. Looks like simple out and back using planes already at DCA (E75).

What are DL and AA trying to do? Is the leisure MCO market that lucrative? Or are they just trying to mess with B6 and each other? I can't imagine this is high yielding traffic since it is so leisure heavy. Chasing folks who are willing to pay $49 on NK and wear all their clothes on their flight to save money seems like a losing proposition.

Obviously this is all about maximizing Latin connects as AA loses LATAM, but SERIOUSLY is hourly service needed to provide connections??? NO. This is will be a bloodbath to end all bloodbaths. I bet they start chopping the freq down before it even flies.

DCA-JFK may be pointless to you, but the professionals at AA see a point. Undoubtably one or a combination of:

1. They think this will be profitable with a combination of O&D and connections they would otherwise lose to other carriers.

2.This frees up space that they can sell for a higher profit through other hubs.

3. It provides network benefits that are important to encouraging loyalty in high value costumers.

4 . It is the most cost effective method to hold onto JFK and/or DCA slots.

I think this is more about trying to get DL off the route than it is about AA needing additional capacity for connections. DL's starting the route 5x daily in order to provide feed traffic to Latam at MIA (and I'd guess there's a decent amount of MCO traffic originating from LA's secondary Brazil flights). AA obviously wants DL off this important feeder route ASAP, and is pulling a response like what UA did on SFO-DEN when VX entered. The difference here is that DL has the deep pockets to hang in this money-losing route longer term since it's strategically important for them. VX didn't have the ability to do that on SFO-DEN, and once they dropped it UA returned from something like 16x daily back down to ~11 daily. We'll see how long AA maintains this frequency on MIA-MCO. I suspect they'll go back to a more reasonable level after summer, with DL continuing to stick it out.
This is my signature until I think of a better one.

It's only about connects. There is no local market from MCO to MIA. What minimal traffic appears in DB1B is really nearly all double ticketing. If prices fall to $49 there may be some local market created, but lets be clear this is 100% about connect passengers. That's why I think AA's strategy of flying hourly makes no sense. That's what you do in a big local market. That doesn't exist here.

The existing PDEW traffic (which as I said is likely nearly all double ticketing) is 235 PDEW. There will be 2302 seats per day this Summer. The "local" market would only fill 10% of seats.

I cannot believe that AA cut JFK-SAN. That used to be a 767 route just a few years back, with several frequencies per day. Wow how times have changed.

AA has run 772s on occasional one offs. I remember one time when I was going back and forth between MIA and MCO they sub'd a 773 for a 321. IIRC the summer of 2018 it was all 763. With this many flights AA will need to stimulate local demand with cheap flights. I'll bite if it's not BE. I looked at mid week in mid July. BE starts at $139 r/t and Main Cabin at $177. AA has a ways to go to meet Spirit fares. Of course that's still months off.
