The 10's are more common than you think.

Plenty of winter takeoffs from runways 10, of course, but landings on runways 10 are rarer than landings on runways 1.

As long as I've been in the Bay Area for 30 years, my impression is that landings on the 1s are more rare than landings on the 10s. Planes will land on the 10s when we get a nice weather system with a low pressure gradient that blow wind from the southeast direction. However, it's very very rare that wind will blow in the direction forcing planes to land on the 1s.

Has any aircraft landed on runways 10 in the last couple of years?

I flew in today from ZRH on LX38 (a773). Initially I thought we were lined up for 28L but then we made a Kai Tak like circling approach to 1R.

The pilot flying made a very nice landing too.

What a treat! That always makes a memorable experience.

I had a similar experience at EWR on a LH 747 we were lined up on 4R then we inched closer to nyc skyline and right over the turnpike landed on rwy 29 with a spectacular decel all the way to the last exit.

For those interested, here is an example of the RNAV visual 1R. Took some googling but lucky to find it.

Fascinating. How is there no missed approach procedure? Also, what is that 14 degree track to the left of SQIRL intersection?

There is no published Missed Approach. All Missed Approaches will have a heading and altitude assigned by ATC.

My guess for the 014 is a “blown up” picture of the final straight in segment depicting it as 014 which is runway heading........that is the procedure but not a United Airlines plate. We don’t have that extra 014 line.

A quick photoshop of some old school apartment towers and that’s the Kai Tak angle. Very cool video!

This got me thinking, is there any other resources besides Flightaware or Flightradar24 to be informed of different ops at SFO? If I had known planes were landing on the 1s, I would have jumped to go to SFO earlier in the day.

Got to read the TAFs/METARs or watch the weather report on the news. Best advice I can give. You can also check out this site daily.

Agreed. Unfortunately, as I said above, the 01's are the option of last resort as they screw up arrival and departure rates so bad, so they only use them when they absolutely have to and get off of them as soon as they can. The 10's for Arrivals are far less disruptive as, again if they are on them do to wind out of the E or SE, you can use the 01's for Departures and keep your rates fairly high. The two times I was departing SFO and they were landing on the 10's they were also taking off on the 10's, but I believe that was because a heavy storm had just passed and was sitting over the bay. We took an immediate right turn after clearing the 28 end and followed the peninsula while we gained altitude to get above it all. Very different from all of the 01 shots over the Bay and 28 city views out of the San Bruno cut.
