Flair Expand Into Eastern Canada, including Finally to YOW

Thu Feb 13, 2020 8:14 pm

The 2nd last of Canada's big 8 airports/metro will soon be welcoming Flair with the following new routes (initially starting out as summer-seasonal):

YHZ-YOW-YYC 3x/wk
YHZ-YOW-YEG 3x/wk
YOW-YYZ Daily with connections available to/from YVR.

Other new routes/cities include YSJ and YYG to YYZ 4x and 3x weekly respectively and YYC-YLW 5x/wk.

The other Flair thread refers to their pullout at YXX and consolidation at YVR: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1440987&p=22015983#p22015983.

While the YXX pullout frees up some aircraft time, these additions surely mean that Flair have sourced another 738.

They seem to be making a shift to a model more similar to the mainstream U.S. ULCC carriers. Allegiant is the only ULCC still with a large presence at secondary airports. Spirit, Frontierm, Sun Country and now Allegiant also see there is more growth opportunity competing directly against the majors, even Southwest and JetBlue but on a much reduced frequency. If Flair decided to just scrape the bottom level fares out of high demand markets Westjet and AC will ignore them.

So with these additions, Flair will essentially have hub/focus city operations in YEG and YOW, right?

With all the new flight additions and the loss of YXX, I'd guess YYZ will be the city with the most flights. YOW is starting out with 19 flights/week. I don't know if this is MAX-related or in response to Flair, but AC are now showing YOW-YYC at 4x daily on E90s (changed from 3x 319s). AC have never ever had more than 3x daily on YOW-YYC. EDIT: Appears to be MAX-related at YOW-YYC reverts to 3x daily on 319s in July...but the MAX cuts don't extend to July yet!

The last time YOW gained that much capacity in one shot was probably when AC did a large expansion circa 2006 when they added out of YOW nonstops to FRA, YYT, YYG, YQM, YQR, YXE and YQT, along with more YEG, YYC, YVR frequency all in the span of a few months. Of those additions, over time the first six in the list were reduced to summer-seasonal (with FRA now moving to LH), YQT was cut outright, while the latter 3's extra capacity that was originally added year-round, now only shows up in summer...which has been increased gradually again as noted above.

I'd expect the next good sized capacity jump at YOW will be when AC finishes retiring the E90s. Assuming no frequency cuts, AC would at a minimum be upgauging by 23 seats/flight (i.e. to mainline 319s).
