Iraq to pay 4.8M€ for YI-AGP/ALM parking fee

Fri Feb 14, 2020 10:06 am

Hey,

I just read that Iraq and Tunisia came to an agreement about the parking fee for 2 747 (1 747-200 and 1 747SP) that belong to Iraqi Airways, and that are parked since 1991 in Tozeur, Tunisia. Saddam Hussein is said to have had the planes flown to Tunisia to avoid having it destroyed due to the second Gulf war. The new Iraqi Government tried to sell the plane without any success. It is said that the planes have been serviced and that they are in "good" condition. With no buyer in sight, Iraq will pay Tunisia 4.8M€ in parking fees, before dismantling the aircarfts.

Sad. They spend most of their lives on the ground.

I saw them up close just over 10 years ago... they were definitely not being maintained back then, and were in a pretty awful condition!

If it is true that they are in "good" condition, then I am surprised there were no buyers seeings as there are still VIP 747SPs in service.

It would be interesting to see what they are like inside. Maybe if an eager enthusiast was willing to pay enough they might get a private tour to document this bit of history.

Most likely due to age and questions as to maintenance, these aircraft will be scarp with some of the revenue from them to the airport authority to cover part of the fees due.

Maybe Sam Chui can do that.

I wondered why this article doesn't show any pictures except for the satellite photo.

I then checked our database just to realize that no one took a photo since 2014 (well, at least not for a.net)?!?!?

There are pictures in the Brian Baum book about the 747SP, wasn’t that special, big leather chairs and conference tables but standard 747 Classic overhead bins throughout, which lacked imagination I thought. Normal “cathedral style” side walls and window surrounds as standard for the era (and still seen on AF1, for brevity). The only difference now would be about an inch of dust, mushrooms (non magic variety, more’s the pity) and lots of scorpions. Happy valentines, a.netters

If I had infinite money, I would fix myself up a private classic 747.

The scorpions are definitely a plus :-)

What can be seen on the pictures....no engine covers, so it seems, the B747s were "excellent maintained and prepared for storage".

Looking at photos I took in 2010, the 742 was already missing an engine. I highly highly doubt they were ever maintained properly on the ground. Were ever run or powered up. Also I'm not sure given how remote Tozeur is, whom will go all the way out there to scrap them.

Correction, meant 2004, not 2014 (took the dog for a long walk and now it's too late to edit my post)

Can you share these pics?

I just spent a few hours trying to find the hard drive with the original photos on. Sadly all I have right now are these, very poor quality photos. Will keep searching though, as it's made me realise I've lost track of a fair few gigs of photos on a hard drive somewhere... pre drop box era.

Oh nice. After 14 or 16 years of excellent storage conditions under nice only little bit, really only little bit of sunny, hot and little bit of dusty conditions in the Tunisia desert, cockpit windows protected by a cover called "nothing there" and engines cover named "where are they", the pilots can just climb in this jet and....

Forget the parting out, just scrap it.

Indeed I wonder what the people who wrote the article meant by "good conditions". I have also read elsewhere that Iraqi mechanics use to fly to Tozeur to maintain those bird.

I think it's swinging in the wind. Leaving those JT9D's open for decades a'int good. They'll never fly agin, sad for the -SP. It has low hours.
