FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Maybe the secondary Brazilian market to south florida don't do as well as from VCP?

I'd expect more of these DL JVs adding capacity to MIA.

AS PAE-PDX JUL 3>2[4] AUG 3>2[4] SEP 3>2[4] OCT 3>2[4] NOV 3>2[3]

PAE really underperforms vs SEA.

com'on B6, this is a market you need to get into.

I don't quite get how AY makes all these connections work. It's not exactly at a great geographical location.

looks like continued shift to JFK to use more slots.

yeah, I saw on twitter the loads for IAD-JFK is atrocious. Not sure the point of this.
DL LIH-SEA SEP 0.7>1.0[0.7] OCT 0.7>1.0[0.7] NOV 0.7>1.0[0.7]

If DL really wants to get more gates, it needs to do more of this. Fly on those off peak days to get its seat totals up.

It's clear by now, AS kills NK in SEA/PDX. Hasn't stopped NK from keep trying stuff that will bleed money.

MAX has really killed them. Interesting enough AA/UA have also pulled back MAX flying until Aug/Sep, but those are not showing up as much.

MAX has really killed them. Interesting enough AA/UA have also pulled back MAX flying until Aug/Sep, but those are not showing up as much.

AA and UA are receiving additional aircraft (used A319s and 737-700s for UA, A321NEOs for AA) while not removing any narrow bodies from the fleet (AA's MD-80s were already retired).

WN on the other hand is removing 20-30 737-700s from the fleet and not adding anything.

Southwest has whammied Frontier on MEM/DEN, it seems. Doesn't help Frontier connections are joke and one of the big onward destinations was LAS which Allegiant flies 6 days a week, twice on Thur and Sun.

The WN moves from Boston continue to moderately reduce its presence there. Will be interesting to see what resumes post MAX crisis.

The close-in DL adds are, as said, due to the China flight reduction.

The A350 and 777s are upgauging DTW/ATL-CDG/AMS.

The A339 are going to upgauging SEA-AMS.

The freed-up 767 and A330 from the TATL upgauging are being used on other incremental TATL flying, additional DTW/ATL-LAS and to places like ATL-SEA, SLC, SAN

More than likely UA and AA have been slowly pulling the flying from the MAX and then when they finally announce they are pulling it there are few flights that actually get cut because they are just updating the fleet types the public sees.

WN just started this route about 5 months ago. Strange that they're killing it so soon. DL runs 3X daily on A319s so there must not be enough capacity to go around.

AA ORD-TUS APR 2>3[1.8]

Surprising to see a 50 percent increase less than two months away but always glad to see it. The new flight is a 738 redeye, explains how AA got the aircraft for it.

UA ABQ-SFO JUN 3>1.8[3] JUL 3>1.9[3] AUG 3>1.8[3] SEP 3>1.9[2] OCT 3>1.8[2.0] NOV 3>1.9[2.0]

That was short lived, the third flight was only added to the OAG tape a couple weeks ago.

It looks like most of the cuts are new/fairly new route announcements that were clearly dependent upon the MAX’s return for the summer peak.

It’s interesting to note how only this, PHX-PIT and BUR-HOU are the only routes “cut” (i.e. temporarily suspended) outright. Every other route retains at least Saturday-only service, with many being Sat/Sun...obviously when there’s always slack in the fleet...but evidently not enough slack or logistics dictate not possible for these three routes to retain their Saturday flights.

Enilria thanks as always. Regarding UA at DEN, didn’t they just have a large add for DEN a few weeks ago? It looks like this is largely just reversing those planned adds.

This is certainly contrary to the recent dialog. Unless it's driven by upgauging it's quite a change of plan (or what many people thought was the plan).

WN MAX Swiss cheese schedule cuts are the results of this. Basically they set out a summer schedule with the addition of 74 MAX aircraft back in the schedule. Now another round of the painful cuts.
If I was frequent traveler I would have switched to Delta by now since they seem to be the only one's with a reliable schedule these days.

United is out the MAX too I wouldn’t put to much thought into it.

A lot of those DEN cuts also have RJs on them except BWI/BDL, so they could be upgauged as well.

PAE really underperforms vs SEA.

They are launching PAE-BOI and with AS being capped at 18 flights, they have to trim a flight from somewhere. Same thing happened when they added PAE-GEG.

If AS is able to add more direct destinations from PAE than it had initially planned, rather than funnel passengers through PDX, that is a positive sign.

Kinda shocked that 16 months along they do not have the MAX cuts baked into the core schedule so they can easily be lopped off.

One big difference between AA, UA, and WN is that AA and UA normally only operate narrowbody mainline aircraft such as the 737, A319, A320, or A321 on flights to and from their hubs (with a few exceptions such as AUS-BOS/SJC on AA, CLE-Florida on UA, HNL-Micronesia on UA, and intra-Micronesia routes on UA) whereas WN operates 737 planes throughout its entire network.

Don't think so.

AS said in November that it was looking at starting PAE-ORD and PAE-DFW.

If AS is able to acquire UA's 3 spare slots from cutting SFO-PAE, they can make it happen. With the AS/AA tie-up, this makes ORD and DFW now even more likely.

It is not contrary to recent dialog it just the way enilria presents the information WN was clearly presented as MAX cuts while UA is presented as UA is reducing DEN.

UA already announced they have pulled the MAX off the schedule till September. The reductions you are seeing and a direct result of of this grounding. By May 2020 UA was supposed to have 50 or more (if I read the delivery schedule correctly) MAX frames in service. UA is starting to catch up to WN and AA in terms of not being able to cover all MAX flying with other aircraft. Last summer 2019 UA only had to cover 14 frames out of service. UA could easily cover that amount of flying. However come summer of 2020 it is impossible for UA to cover 50+ frames of MAX flying with the existing aircraft in the fleet.

The longer UA leaves the MAXs on the schedule the more difficult it becomes to accommodate passengers already booked on MAX flights onto other non MAX flights. But enilria presents it as though UA is reducing DEN because it bolsters a post made in other thread about UA at DEN where a statement was made that UA only wants extra gates to gate sit and block competition not to actually expand or grow DEN.

Every UA hub across the board will see a varying degree of cuts this coming summer as UA adjust the schedule to account for MAXs that will not be in the fleet.

The routes out of DFW that NK is dropping have nonstop service out of DFW/DAL on airlines other than AA or WN. There are also some travelers in the Dallas/Fort Worth market who will avoid NK at all costs due to poor customer service and NK stranding passengers in the event of cancellations or delays.

While NK had 85.56% load factors on DFW-SEA in the January 2019 - November 2019 time period, NK was competing against AA, AS, and WN on DFW/SEA (and AS also serves SEA nonstop from both DFW and DAL).

Bingo, these are MAX related cuts. WN has to do them, UA has to do them and AA has to do them. They just get presented on these weekly threads as a pullback to create a dramatic scenario. While the MAX is missing from the fleets of these airlines flights will have to get cut.

Alaska Airlines has so far described service at Paine Field as successful. In the fall, CEO Brad Tilden even expressed a wish that the two-gate passenger terminal be expanded to five or six gates.

Agree. As pointed out in my above post this is only a net change of -10 departures. Who knows, maybe next week they'll fill some of these cuts in other markets from Denver.

In other news, a recent local press release said that CVN (Clovis, NM) will change from their current EAS provider, which is currently Boutique Air with 3 per day to DFW using 9-seat PC-12's, to Key Lime Air, dba Denver Air Connection, with two daily to DEN on a 30-seat RJ. Big step up for CVN however they recommended to the DOT that they prefer service to DFW and favored a bid from Contour for 30-seat RJ's to DFW. CVN is excited to be getting RJ's but baffled why they didn't get DFW service, even though the bid amounts were similar. This change is planned for May 1.

I flew MEM-DEN on F9 several times in 2017-2018 for work. WN wasn't flying the route then, of course, and even UA wasn't always flying it twice daily (there were occasional days where it only flew once).

WN's entrance has definitely had a huge impact, but UA is also paying more attention to this one too (they are at 3x daily this summer).

AS said in November that it was looking at starting PAE-ORD and PAE-DFW.

If AS is able to acquire UA's 3 spare slots from cutting SFO-PAE, they can make it happen. With the AS/AA tie-up, this makes ORD and DFW now even more likely.

Do you have a source on that?

In October, Alaska said it was considering flights from Everett to Chicago and Dallas. Spokesman Ray Lane on Monday said the airline was aware of United’s reduction in service and “our schedule to and from Paine Field remains unchanged at this time.”

Alaska Airlines has so far described service at Paine Field as successful. In the fall, CEO Brad Tilden even expressed a wish that the two-gate passenger terminal be expanded to five or six gates.

BLI-DFW, BLI-ORD, is my dart aimed at a map!
I kind of feel the PAE routes are probably too valuable, with the limited cap, of arrival and departure times available, to do longer haul without rejigging a bunch of departures times

UA gate space could change that of course though.

CA's approach to addressing the demand fallout resulting from COVID 19 - combined segments. Reminiscent of days of yore when gateway tags were flown to a downline station unable to support service on a stand-alone basis. In essence, what's happening here.

Been a long, long time since CVN has had service of that gauge (I'm thinking WAAY back to Texas International days?). I don't recall CVN having been connected to DEN even doing the height of Mesa Airlines. Anyhow, congrats to CVN.

Seems like a lot of SJC cuts. These cuts seem to get bigger and bigger. Surprising their stock is not cratering.

SJC is one of their larger stations. But rather than getting worked up about it, I’m chaulking it up to MAX cuts. No one else is expanding at SJC or anywhere, so it’s not like someone is running WH off at SJC.

Kinda shocked that 16 months along they do not have the MAX cuts baked into the core schedule so they can easily be lopped off.

Wasn’t the assumption that airlines publish a full/intended schedule so they can bolster their damage claims against Boeing?

This is certainly contrary to the recent dialog. Unless it's driven by upgauging it's quite a change of plan (or what many people thought was the plan).

Once you have data to show that DEN is cut relatively less than other hubs (to support the dialog that UA is 'growing' DEN), you'll have something to say.

WN just started this route about 5 months ago. Strange that they're killing it so soon. DL runs 3X daily on A319s so there must not be enough capacity to go around.

Flyguy

These cuts, which are uniformly more than 90 days out, will affect frequent travelers minimally. I can't remember the last time I booked business travel more than 30 days out, and I rarely book domestic leisure travel more than 75 days out.

By virtue of its location on the west coast, SJC also has a lot of longer flights that overfly hubs and thus can be cut with little to no effect on the network.

WN is able to make some cuts at SJC due to WN having nonstop service out of OAK to the same destinations and WN offering 1-stop connecting service out of SJC to most of the destinations that WN doesn't serve nonstop from SJC.

WN will be in a somewhat better position after August 10th as there are a few WN summer seasonal nonstop routes such as HOU-PDX, HOU-SEA, and IND-SAN that normally end in August.

WN will also be able to avoid having to completely drop routes if WN can either pick up a few used 737NG planes or WN can get a few 737 MAX planes back in service in Fall 2020.

Here you go, this is what's currently out there for the summer:

DEN +44 departures
EWR +13 departures
IAD +28 departures
IAH +25 departures
LAX +7 departures
ORD +31 departures
SFO +5 departures

Even after the "cuts" this weekend, all hubs are still growing and DEN is still growing the most by far. The schedule out there selling probably still isn't final, but there's nothing to indicate that UA has reversed what they've been saying.

It is odd the DOT didn't go with the local recommendation.

One thing I noted in articles I read on this: SkyWest responded to the initial EAS request, though they noted they wouldn't be able to service Clovis unless TSA was also at the airport. SkyWest proposed 50-seat CRJ flights to both DEN and IAH.

Maybe come this time next year, we'll see that SkyWest bid again:

1. SkyWest already flies to Denver from a number of High Plains EAS markets, interlining with United. Dodge City was the most recent add of this type.

2. Hobbs, NM is not far from Clovis: they aren't EAS but they have non-stop flights to IAH and added DEN in late CY 2019.

I went and looked at the Frontier schedule, I looks like they dumped the entire first three weeks of April and picks back at the end, the summer still shows 4x weekly but this cut was close in so I wouldn't trust booking with them. Delta must have felt it also as they start SLC with a A319 for more direct flights to the PNW.

AV JFK-MDE SEP 1.0>0.8[1.0] OCT 1.0>0.6[1.0] NOV 1.0>0.6[1.0]

com'on B6, this is a market you need to get into.
Keep in mind, AV is upgauging from the A319 to the 787, hence the reduction in flights.

AY HEL-JFK APR 1.0>1.4[1.0] MAY 1.0>1.5[1.0] JUN 1.0>1.7[1.0] JUL 1.0>1.7[1.0] AUG 1.0>1.7[1.0] SEP 1.0>1.6[1.0] OCT 1.0>1.4[1.0]

I don't quite get how AY makes all these connections work. It's not exactly at a great geographical location.

HEL is in a great position for connections. Sure, not ideal for travelers from the US to Europe, but you forget Asia. JFK-HEL-SE Asia (and India) is more often than not the shortest option (after non-stops, of which there are few.)
