A +0.7% start for YOW. Pretty good considering the ORD suspension that resumes in early March. International continues to rebound nicely. Maybe YOW will finally surpass the 2012 record for international pax...assuming the Coronavirus doesn't spread much in Europe and North America.

MONTREAL YUL

January 2020

Overall: 1,600,363, +4.5%

Domestic: 491,540 +0.2%
International: 760,535 +8.5%
US: 348,288 +2.3%

https://www.admtl.com/sites/default/fil ... 020_EN.pdf

Great results for January. February should be decent as well. It's in March and beyond that we will be bleeding red. Total international is 1,108,823, compared to 1,084,619 for YVR. So already ahead, even before the coronavirus really hit the YVR numbers. Too bad. As these numbers show, YUL was going to have a great year, yet again. Alas, that scenario is no more.

====================================================================================================

On another note,

Due to the Coronavirus, Transport Minister Garneau said he will limit inbound overseas international flights to a certain number of specified airports. Those airports haven't been specified yet, but limiting it to the 3 or 4 majors would be my guess.

Also, a press release from ADM basically confirming travel restrictions for Europeans transiting YUL to the US as of midnight tonight.

Subject: Restrictions - Entry to the U.S. for some passagers

As of March 13, 11:59 p.m. passengers who were present within the Schengen Area (Europe) during the last 14-days will be denied entry to the United States of America. This does not apply to legal permanent residents, (generally) immediate family members of U.S. citizens, and other individuals who are identified in the proclamation.

If inbound international flights get restricted to only 3 airports, I would guess those would be YUL, YYZ and YVR. A fourth airport would likely be YYC.

YYC should get a pass due to being WestJet's main hub.

I'm sure YYC will be alright. Albertans are already really angry/dumbfounded-a ban like this would be an unnecessary poke in the eye IMHO.

I would imagine both YUL and YOW will have very strong domestic February numbers thanks to the Via Rail blockades. AC were upgauging a lot of Rapidair flights over a 3 week period.

However, there’s little doubt YUL will fall well below 20 million...15 million? and YOW well below 5 million...probably back to circa 2005 levels well below 4.

Well here's the first of our two 'bets' hitting the positive side. As expected, YOW had a good month thanks to Via's shutdown for much of the month as shown below:

YOW February

February / 2019 / 2020 / % Change
Domestic / 277,051 / 290,829 / +5.0% - Via Rail blockades for much of the month - lots of Rapidair upgauges
Transborder / 68,217 / 63,333 / -7.2%
International / 59,598 / 67,150 / +12.7%
Total Feb. / 404,866 / 421,312 / +4.1% (but that's it for 2020 as far a good looking numbers go - March will lucky to be above 300,000, while April will be luck to break 100,000)

Y-T-D / 2019 / 2020 / % Change
Domestic / 550,014 / 569,079 / +3.5%
Transborder / 134,798 / 125,210 / -7.1%
International / 123,436 / 133,405 / +8.1%
Total / 808,248 / 827,694 / +2.4%

2020 for YOW was shaping up to be a record year. Traffic probably would have pushed the 5.3 million mark with LH coming, AC 788 & 330, new Flair 17x weekly, UA back on ORD and more AC domestic. Now hitting 3 million for the year could be a stretch. YUL could drop to under 12 million.

Very true. Factoring that out the leap year day, YOW's growth would have been about +0.7% or equal to January. In other words without the Via boost, YOW probably would have broken even under 'normal' circumstances.

While March’s pax numbers will be grim (1st two weeks were fairly ’normal’), April will be apocalyptic. YYZ are averaging about 5,000 (both enplanements and deplanements) pax per day now (equivalent to an average day at YQB), while YOW is around 800 (an average day at an airport the size of YKA). In fact the YOW Airport Authority said only 120 pax departed from the airport this past Wednesday. 12 flights operated that day, so an average of 10 pax per departure. A normal Wednesday at YOW in March or April would see about 7,000 enplanements and 110 departures.

Links to the stories with the pax data:

https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/mobile/canad ... -1.4881999

https://ottawacitizen.com/business/with ... 2b3b17b5b/

Any other cities have early data?

When I see these numbers I wonder why the airlines are still offering flights? I know in the U.S. the bailout seemingly requires them to operate the same routes, even with empty ghost planes. What's the story in Canada?

Well with the 90% cut in passenger flights, there’s actually a shortage of cargo capacity. AC are even operating some cargo-only widebody flights due to the lack of belly space.

The U.S. CARES requirements is points, not routes. A point can be one of multiple airports serving the city. From the DOT Show cause order:

Additionally, if a covered carrier
served a point with any degree of scheduled service from more than one other point, it would
only need to provide service from that point to one of the previously served points as long as it
meets the above frequency requirements.

And I suspect they can make good money with it. Airports statistics will be interesting to check for April and later times.

Here’s my prediction for April pax counts for the ‘big 8’:
YYZ: 150,000
YVR: 90,000
YUL: 75,000
YYC: 85,000 - WS are flying more than AC = ahead of YUL
YEG: 45,000
YOW/YWG/YHZ: 20-30,000 - I suspect YHZ will have the most as AC are still regionally feeding ‘a lot’ of Atlantic Canada’s ‘traffic’ to YHZ

Even with fewer domestic flights, I think YUL will see more passengers than YYC in April.

You still have a lot of Canadians that will be coming back into the country in April. AC/WS have cut all international/US service from YYC for April. So have Asian/European carriers (KLM ends YYC today). That is not the case at YUL.

I meant it for cargo. Passenger levels will of course be down somehwere in the basement or below...
