Future plans of Porter, JAZZ and Westjet Encore

Fri Feb 21, 2020 12:28 pm

The future of the deHavilland Canada DHC-8Q-400 is somewhat unclear at the moment due to low sales. What would these large Canadian operators of the type do if DHC is terminating the program?
Especially Porter would be in trouble because they need the special performance of the type for their operation out of the Toronto Island airport. But the two others must be seriously affected too, if that happens.

What could they do in this case?

I would think Jazz is more concerned with what to replace their 100-300s with considering they use them for smaller strips up north that most Crjs can't get into.

Jazz has a committed 25 new planes that are TBD and to be delivered mid-late 2020s. It has been discussed that Viking is in the works for a shorter Dash 8-400 (a new 300). That’ll be what the new planes will most likely be. Until then the -300s have a lot of life left in them.

What special performance does the Dash 8 have that the ATR 72-600 doesn't have that's required at YTZ?

YTZ main runway is only 3,988 ft. /1,216 m. Porter flies from this runway nonstop to places like Chicago MDW and Myrtle Beach.

The ATR can't do this?

I don't think the ATR can fly that far with a decent load from a short runway

The ATR would also be completely uncompeitive on routes where Porter compete with jets out of Pearson, YOW and YUL. On the DH4, flight time differences in most instances are either the same or no more than an extra 15 minutes. Take YOW-YHZ for example, the DH4 takes about an extra 15 minutes vs a jet. An ATR on the other hand would add 45-60 minutes.

The new De Havilland just had a very successful Dubai airshow adding a couple of years of backlog at the show. If PD ever get worried about the line staying open, there's nothing stopping them from ordering new DH4s. Now that the Dash 8 is out of the hands of the mess that is Bombardier, I think the 8 has a might brighter future today than it did this time last year.

Any news on where the production is going to move after Downsview closes? Another plant at YYZ?

The advantage for Viking Air is that it has deep (Thomson family) pockets backing it. They're among the ten richest families in the world.

On Toronto routes does that matter? I mean, I can go from wheels down to landside at YTZ in 20 minutes even with checked bags every day of the week. A lot of times at YYZ I'm not even off the plane 20 minutes after landing.

Great then!!

Because moving the Q400 out of Downsview will cost a bundle and then some. (Plus improving the model, lower unit costs and/or launching a 50 seat version)

And as it's a family controled business (like Bombardier?) and amongs the world richest, then Bay Street should reserve them the same treatmemt for eventual subsidies/loans as they did to Bombardier, right? (Sarcasm off)

Seriously, I'm eager to know how ($) they'll move out of Downsview.
