Atlas Air fleet reduction

Mon Feb 24, 2020 11:22 am

Earlier this year, they have parked four 744P2F converted, following "net loss of $293.1m" in 2019. Also they "plan to return one 747-400 freighter to its lessor in the first half of this year,” it said “In addition, we have sold a 757 freighter and expect to sell a 777 freighter and a 737 passenger aircraft."

Remains to be seen what impact the Coronavirus will have on its business. Lufthansa seems to be poised of parking all its MD-11s earlier than planned according to what's been posted on their specific thread.

Talked to a friend who is a senior exec at UPS and the bottom on this one is not visible. This could get very, very bad. FedEx is parking jets and UPS may indeed follow suit.

Atlas actually has some extra business right now due to belly cargo being eliminated as pax flights were dropped. Their problems predate the virus, and they are many.

Atlas has a passenger 737? Who's it operating for?

Keep in mind the loss was an entirely paper loss and write down and a non cash charge. They had a $98mil operating profit.

AAWW stock rose on the earnings which beat analysts expectations.

Atlas owns Southern Air who operate a fleet of 7 737’s. Thought they were all cargo, though.

The US economy has been expanding for a very long time. At some point in time there will be a correction, and we might have entered it. I know it usually takes two consecutive quarters to establish that we’ve entered a recession, but I believe cargo airlines are one of the bell weathers that are watched.

There are loosers and winners in the present difficult cargo market :

Cargolux is still adding 747-400 freighters , LX-NCL , ex Cargologicair (VolgaDnepr) G-CLAE, was introduced as from February 19th in the Cargolux fleet.

FedEx was already parking planes because of new frame replacements and the loss of the Amazon contract which was at minimum 15% of domestic volume.
UPS picked up a lot of that freight and from what I've heard from their own management they are filling every plane now. UPS might move frames around, but parking them, not so sure on that.

Brown isn’t parking anything, even with the global reduction. Maybe there will be some extra TLC the fleet will take on, but nothing is going to the desert unless the downturn is massive.

Media is funny.

Atlas added 11 aircraft to its fleet in 2019, and they focus on it opting to retire 4 old frames.

Things actually look decent at Atlas. Their operating profit was stronger than anticipated, and the loss they published as entirely a non-cash charge as it wrote down value in older aircraft. (just like how United recently wrote down $400mil in the value its HKG operation)

:checkmark:

And not just China. There is a growing backlog headed to Asia also from the U.S.

As of Sat, USPS was reporting 10 day backlog of mail and packages on the West Coast headed to Asia as there is simply not enough lift in the market.

It’s common sense. All the factories are going to reopen then they’ll be a light of freight till everything is returned to normal. If it’s not in a couple weeks it’ll be in a month or two.

IIRC it's a 737-400 that they had flying around on proving runs for the Amazon 783F project. Visited RFD quite a bit. Reg N361GT
