Will an aircraft struggle with demand if its size exceeds the “80 metre box limit”?

Thu Feb 27, 2020 3:21 am

So recently I looked up at the sizes of various aircraft and I noticed that none of the larger aircraft exceeded a wingspan or length of 80m. I then found out that there was an “80m box limit” for aircraft if to see if they can be used at conventional airports or not. So I was thinking, if Airbus or Boeing or any company designed a huge plane exceeding the box limit, will it struggle in demand and interest like the A380?
Also, I think there was a Boeing 747-600X plan quite some time ago which was supposed to have a length of 85m and a wingspan of 77m which didn’t draw much attention.

I think it would be too expensive considering most airports would have to redesign and/or rebuild gate areas to accommodate them. Even widening runways for the A380 was expensive enough.

The runways were widened for the A380 and the 747-8 got exemptions in the USA. Both fall into the same category F. Many airports have not even prepared for the 80 x 80 box, so talking about bigger is not really possible.

Plus, that whole "folding wing" tech alters ones conception of space requirements.

No. Whats changed is the travel habits and increased ETOPS.
unless you can't walk down stairs I've boarded an arrived in DXB
in an A380 on a remote stand. It's no different to any other aircraft.

Its more that that I'll give you an example from my corner of the earth.
The 787 has meant YVR came online, Soon SFO and ORD, and Lax is
now double daily somedays when not so long ago it was just 1 744 a
day from BNE.

Lots of examples around the world like this but such as US-ASIA flights
bypassing NRT and going direct.

The 777X exceeds the box limit when it doesn't matter - and falls within the box limit when it does.

Yes it will. Look at the Antonov An-225 freighter. All flights need to be carefully coordinated with all other airport operations because of the enormous span of 88 meters.

No it's wingspan is 71.8m unfolded so is within the box limit. Just goes from a Code E to a Code F.
