CLT announces record traffic numbers

Mon Mar 02, 2020 5:41 pm

Charlotte Douglas’s Facebook page is hinting to a big announcement on Tuesday 3/3/2020. Any guesses as to what it will be? I’m assuming something with AA since it’s tails were in the post

CLT-DOH ;)

Not, Vasu Raja said they’re not a candidate.

I’d bet on CLT-South America, likely Brazil given their new GOL partnership.

Given the current climate it sure seems like a bad time to be announcing new service, particularly new international service. Given that these announcements are often over-hyped and that the SCASD grants were just awarded, I'm going to guess that this is American Eagle flights 2x daily to Athens, Georgia.

Why would it BA or US and have AA tails on it. If it would be BA I would expect something British, AS something from the PNW (just my guess).

They wouldn't announce a TATL flight this time of year.

The Twitter post had a random picture of people in a terminal instead of AA tails, so maybe the Facebook picture isn’t exact hinting at AA service, though it most likely will be.

It's definitely something related to AA. My guesses are either a few new regional routes (Like ICT, FSM, CID, FAR, LFT) or maybe a 1-2 new Caribbean routes like STI, POS, or KIN. Doubt it's a DOH related announcement due to the time.

Please Alaska to Seattle , I still don’t understand how they haven’t started this route ?? I thought it has more passengers per day than RDU and would be equally if not more profitable ?

I wouldn't call the entry of AS into CLT "big news". I don't recall the airport making a similar announcement when NK or F9 announced service. I would guess it is either a multitude of new flights by AA, an "exotic" international route/carrier, or an announcement concerning facilities.

Bit of a stretch there. US tried that a while back with their 762's I believe and it didn't last long. It'd make more sense to do this particular routing via their LAX and/or PHX hubs.

unless its an expansion by NK, what about Allegiant? Airports recently have seemed to really prop up a big announcement with 3x a week service between two cities.

CLT-HKG/NRT ? I would have liked to add Beijing/Shanghai but didn't because of the Corona Virus scare.

With the new AA and AS agreement I have to think that it will be a new carrier announcement with routes to either SEA or PDX or both. AS is the only major domestic carrier to not fly into CLT. Of course I would be much happier to hear of some more international service that isnt on a A320 family aircraft but that seems unlikely. With the gate constraints CLT currently experiences with the A330s that serve it now and especially in the summer, I would be surprised if they announced any more wide-body routes until terminal D is expanded. Unless they plan on utilizing something new like the section of terminal A that was given over to them after DL moved over to the new concourse but idk. Should be interesting. Let the wild conspiracy theories continue! :)

I think it may just be record breaking passenger numbers:

As much as all the aforementioned stuff would be, I don't think this is going to be too groundbreaking.

Doubt it. AA has suspended DFW and LAX to HKG, so announcing service when HKG is a ghost town is a no go.

Given the way airport announcements usually go, I'm just going to assume it's for the new IPT service that's being moved from PHL until the actual announcement comes out.

Allegiant is at Concords airport which is on the east side of the metro area. Doubt Allegiant would move airports since they are the only one’s at Concord.

There has been new regional jet services on AA launched from CLT in the past year and CLT didn’t do any ‘big news’ announcements in the past. My guesses would be, new airlines (as mentioned, AS or BA), something facilities related in the master plan now moving forward.

My big bets is it’s new service by another airline and they’re getting CLT to hype it. Could be an expansion by F9 or NK or DL adding SEA and/or BOS and wanting to get some big press with the latest retaliation.

AA has flown CLT - CID since 2016. I’ve taken it numerous times, and actually just took it last Monday and again this Saturday. And it’s up to 3x daily too. ICT probably is long overdue. I could see FSD starting before FAR. COU / Columbia MO is also another one I could see coming.

I can envision any number of American Eagle route additions, but it seems odd any of them would be positioned as "big news" by CLT.

I doubt they'd use AA's tails in the picture if it was a non-AA partner.

Must've missed the news on that one. I don't think AA flies to MLI/PIA/BMI from CLT, either. One of those seems possible too. I doubt it's South America, either.

Vasu Raja has been pretty clear about the chances of CLT-South America resuming as being quite low, and with DL+LATAM now, I'd imagine AA will put even more emphasis on MIA being the gateway to South America.

But, who knows....

1. CLT-HNL overflies PHX, LAX, & DFW
2. Very little O&D
3. CLT is not optimally placed to connect travelers to HNL, as a majority of Hawaii demand is west of CLT, and the Hawaii demand north of CLT is better served through ORD
4. CLT-HNL is very long, longer than CLT-GRU & CLT to most major European markets

Probably new A321XLR seasonal routes to secondary European markets and Latin America. I’m going to throw Malaga and Vienna out there. AA has consistently stated that there isn’t space for more wide bodies in CLT at this time, so the international growth will come via A321XLR’s

The A321XLRs won’t be delivered until 2023... why would they announce them three years in advance?

So if they could not make PHL work to CDG/LHR what makes you think they would fare any better with TA from CLT (a bigger AA hub with less traffic to Europe).

I have a feeling this is going to do with some airport infrastructure improvement and less to nothing to do with routes. The FB post with the announcement has AA tails in it, doubtful CLT is trolling AA putting AA planes for some big DL announcement.
