Where are the two Saudi Royal Flight MD-11s?

Mon Mar 02, 2020 11:02 pm

Those two aircraft should be the last pax MD-11 left yet they haven’t flown in years. Where are they and are they in a condition to be flyable?

Here, gathering sand and no. I believe they haven't flown since about ten years.

Are those 747SPs behind them?

And are there any plans for these birds? Or just waste away in the desert

Yep. Two of them.
A very sad corrosion corner IMHO...
Not sure about future plans...

Cool, thanks. So they are just abandonned, not even stored.

HZ-AFAS didn't operate for a long time in the new livery: https://www.planespotters.net/airframe/ ... ent/r7ml7r

And today I learned why SV has decided to paint the top of the fuselage of their aircraft in that beige colour: the aircraft looks freshly painted even when being stored/abandonned for several years! Very clever, SV! ;-)

Based on A.net's gallery, the last time they were pictured is April 2009.

Could these ever be made flyable? Or are they too far gone? You would think they’d do something with them and not have them sit there. Like they intend to bring them back?

I'm 99.9% sure that HZ-AFAS was sold to Mid East Jet and hence painted out of SV colours in 2009 or 2010.

Can confirm seeing one in the Saudia livery in LAX in 2011 or 2012.

The change of livery was made public in November 2007 and the aircraft was transferred to ASASCO.

On the following picture taken last September, the two MD-11s are seen engineless and HZ-AFAS has several doors open : https://flic.kr/p/2hb6CrD

Exactly, the aircraft was re-registered also from HZ-AFA1 to HZ-AFAS, Mid East Jet operated this aircraft on behalf of ASASCO Dammam.

Being an md11 in 2020 is a pretty good indicator that there's no hope to fly again.

These two must be the lowest cycles/hours MD-11 ever (except those lost during the '90s).

They were manufactured in October & December 1993, and AFAIK they were in the desert from day one until 1999 when both joined the Saudi Arabian Government fleet as HZ-HM7 & 8.

It was owned by Saudi Arabian Airlines in VIP role from delivery as HZ-AFA1 until 2006 when Mid East Jet took the aircraft on as HZ-AFAS hence the repainted livery.

Never realized they sat so long before entering service. Was the economist so bad that even for being low hour and cycles they decided to just abandon them and they’ve been sitting for 8-9 years?

I often heard that SV bought extra planes for spare parts, rather than buying parts. Please feel free to take that with as much salt as you like, it's a second hand story from a former Saudia pilot or two.
L101, 733/4/5/8/9, 741/2/3 (never managed 744!), MD 80/2/3/8/90, MD11, DHC8/3/Q4, E170, E195, 757, 77W, 763/4, Travel Air 2000. A300/310, A319/320/321, A333, ATR-72, probably a few others I forget. Passenger, not pilot, alas! BUD based.

It is crazy to see a country that is so rich and yet wastes its resources so stupidly. At the very least those planes should have been scrapped long ago to get some $ out of them, free up some space and reduce pollution. But no they are sitting there and noone cares. And this country is not that rich anymore, the cost of running their government and social services is so high that they bleed money when oil is under $80 a barrel, as has been the case for years. And it is getting worse right now.

Why?

Anyway, your question has had me speculate about the origin of these two MD-11s acquisition. Brand new, they were parked in the desert for several years before entering service. Now, they have spent what looks like a decade dumped on a no way taxiway. Back in the '90s, SV was looking to modernize its fleet and people at Long Beach were hoping to sell a substantial amount of aircraft, including many MD-11s. In the end only four MD-11Fs were sold while the 777 took the widebody's lion-share where MDC hoped to sell MD-11s. Were these two MD-11s some sort of gift in an attempt to lure a new customer? I'm just speculating.
