I would expect more recently announced long haul routes (and many short haul ones) to be deferred / delayed into 2021 as a consequence of COVID19.

And frequencies were already being cut before coronavirus, seems VS misjudged this one and now have left whatever pax who booked frustrated.

I was booked on VS to GRU in April , they had already rearranged the flight once , something to do with engines . I suspect the real story here is just low advance bookings
I presume I’m just entitled to a refund ? Or can I ask to be rescheduled on flights in December at no extra cost .

Not really, I'm sure this Corona virus drama/flyBE going bust etc will mask it up. Like 9/11 masked them quietly dropping YYZ one summer after it launched.
Virgin are a resilient airline when they need to be. I'm sure they will use this temporary decrease in capacity to drop their remaining A340-600's.

My guess forward bookings were weak (and this would be before the virus became such a thing outside china). Going by VS’s statement though, it seems that UK residents are concerned about the virus and cutting back travel (which makes total sense) That said I believe LHR still gets a daily flight from PEK which I find very surprising (if I am wring please correct). I think the US and many countries stopped all flights from/to China.

VS have confirmed that they will get rid of their 600's now. They don't need them as they have enough aircraft to cope with their existing routes. The 747's are the only guzzling ones left. I wonder if they will go soon too!?

In contrast to the VS fleet based at LHR, the VS 747s are in a leisure-heavy configuration and are based in LGW/MAN with the A332s; nothing other than the final five A35Ks in a comparable configuration will replace them even if they are "guzzlers", at least this soon since those A35Ks are not due until 2021. The 747s easily have over 100 more seats than the next-highest capacity aircraft in their fleet, and they'll send between three to five 747s every summer day to MCO (with a sixth flight done using an A330 on peak weekend days).

In my opinion, October seems like a much more logical start date than March for a Southern Hemisphere route like LHR-GRU anyway...

Also I am surprised they launched GRU before MEX/CUN. VS used to fly to CUN but no longer does. And there needs to be competition on flights to MEX (Only AM and BA fly it) with insane prices with a US connection substantially cheaper. Or maybe because of the DL/AM relationship in SkyTeam they just let AM serve it?
